Could Tubby end up at Texas Tech?

Tubby Smith

According to ESPN, Texas Tech has contacted Tubby Smith about its head coaching vacancy.

The Red Raiders have already met with a handful of other coaches about the job, including Oral Roberts’ Scott Sutton, Southern Illinois’ Barry Hinson, New Mexico State’s Marvin Menzies, Wyoming assistant Steve McClain and former UTEP and Nebraska head coach Doc Sadler. Chris Walker, the former Texas Tech assistant who served as interim coach after Billy Gillispie “resigned,” is also being considered.

Is Texas Tech becoming the land of former UK coaches? If so, they’re getting a major upgrade.

Tubby really needs to grow some handle bars for that mustache. Maybe then people would start taking him more serious.

I think Tubby would do best at a smaller school. I know Tech doesn’t have a crazy basketball fanbase, but his personality and age would do best on a smaller stage. No knock against Tubby at all, but he comes off too easy-going for rabid fans. I remember his reaction on the sideline after beating IU this season…he didnt seem like he was pumped up. Just an opinion, but go small Tubby!

I disagree #4. Tubby was a good x & o guy. His issue is that he could chanmge his style of play to suit varying types of players. But Tubby actually was a very good x n o guy in close games. His x’s and o’s (and clock mgmt) beat K in the tournament. And make no mistake, it was Tubby’s gamesmanship that won that game.

Tubby was a good coach. Any of the 20 yr olds on here can disagree, but Tubby is a great coach in the last 3 minutes of a game, much better than someone else I know….Hey Rev, grow up!

Tubby will take the spot and do the same as what Knight did, he will make them contractually obligated to let one of his sons coach when he steps down.

#17 – As a Texas Tech student and a lifelong Kentucky fan I feel like there’s definitely worse programs to get old basketball coaches from (granted, Billy G was a mistake, and I knew that from the get-go). Oh and you’re welcome for Neal Brown and Chad Scott, by the way. The UK-TTU coaching pipeline has been strong these last few years!

I think Tubby would be great at an Ivy League school. Let him go somewhere that winning 20 games a year and going to the NIT or NCAA tournament every year is satisfactory and coach another 10 years until he’s ready to retire.

Would y’all just give up on the Tubby bashing? He’s a good man who just grew to be a bad fit for UK and left on his own terms. All the controversy of him leaving was made up by the media and crazy-ass, bitter fans. Yes, things went downhill, but just be glad he won a title while he was here and appreciate all the good publicity he brought to UK. I like him, wish him the best, and hope to see his name in the rafters soon. Plus, if I had to pick one coach of our last 4 to draw up one out of bounds play to get a bucket, it’d be Tubby.

#4- Put a ‘cork’ in it! Idiot!!! Tubby was/is a great coach and one we were fortunate in leading the BBN. I was astonished that the new AD wanted his ‘own’ coach (Shaka)…he’ll regret that decision. I wish Tubby only the best…and hope he lands here (TX).

I don’t get our fan base. We’re the only fans that would bash a coach that won a national championship. No one knows if Pitino would have won it all in ’98. What we do know is that Tubby did. Let’s be grateful for his contribution for #7. Personally I believe Minnesota made a mistake in firing Tubby, but it was their mistake to make. If Tubby wants to coach again he will have an opportunity. I for one am proud Tubby coached at UK and won a national championship. Rupp, Hall, Pitino, Smith, and Calipari – no other program can boast a faternity of winning coaches like that. Be proud of everyone who has contributed to the greatness of UK basketball. Here’s hoping coach Stoops is the Rupp for the football program.

Why would Tubby want the Texas Tech job though? I understand why TTU wants Tubby, but not why Tubby would want TTU.

#8 “No, Krzyzewski wasted his timeouts early, that is why Duke lost. Glad the Cats won, but it wasn’t due to Tubby.”

LOL – that’s ridiculous. K didn’t have reason to use up his timeouts until Kentucky closed that 16 point deficit – which occurred thanks in no small part to Tubby mixing it up and catching Duke completely off guard – then K used up all of this timeouts in a panic and with the momentum clearly swinging toward our side, Tubby deliberately did not call any timeouts himself so K could do nothing to stem the tide. We won that game, and that tournament, do largely to Tubby Smith’s excellent coaching job in those last 3 games.

Tubby won the Championship. There is no saying that he didn’t. It’s moronic to say that he didn’t win that Championship.

Could Pitino have done the same with those players? We’ll never know.

I don’t see the argument there. Tubby did win it with Pitino recruits. If you want to say that he didn’t then you’ll have to show me how Tubby recruited those players? Who was the primary influence on those players. Most of them had 2 to 3 years under the Pitino system and less than one year with Tubby and his system.

They were still reacting intuitively upon the training that Pitino had given them.

After that year, Tubby started recruiting his teams. Each team thereafter had major holes or transfers or injuries or something went wrong from Team Turmoil to the DUIs to the Bogans injury.

That was Tubby. Now some will say that this is part of coaching in the NCAA and beyond the control of Tubby.

But that trend did not end at UK. Tubby was fired from Minnesota for the exact same reasons.

Add that to his poor choice in coaching staff…Nepotism, Cronyism…and his out of touch approach to recruiting and you have a guy who is going to fail at any school that ACTUALLY wants to win something as opposed to just win OOC 13-15 cupcake games and 5-7 lower echelon conference games each year. Sure the Tubster beats a highly ranked team once or twice a year. He also perpetually bows out of the tournies early each year.

    That’s your Tubster.

He’s a 20 win and nothing great coach. He’s even keeled. He’ll keep you thinking that “this is the year.” Then somewhere in the middle of the last 3rd of the season it will all fall apart. Guys will transfer, someone key will get arrested, someone key will be injured, someone will have a scheit attitude. Something will happen. Why? Because that is Tubby since 1999. That has been Tubby nearly every time he has to spend more than two years in a program. He comes in and does well with a team that someone else recruit but he can’t build and manage his own team.

“That has been Tubby nearly every time he has to spend more than two years in a program. He comes in and does well with a team that someone else recruit but he can’t build and manage his own team.”

37 – that’s ridiculous and false. Tulsa and Georgia were not as strong when he took them over and they became much stronger. He had a number of seasons which wins well exceeding 20 wins. As for Minnesota, the program was 9-22 before he took over with dismal records for some time.

His record at Kentucky was quite strong despite the naysayers – even Adolph Rupp would be called a horrible coach by the standards you and other people are applying to Tubby Smith. You should be embarrassed.
