Some things in life are truly not fair. You look at a guy like Tom Brady and you say to yourself….its not enought that the guy is a great football player, but he also has to be good looking enough to date any woman in America without even having to try. The same thing has to apply to students who get to go to the College of Charleston. Charleston, SC is maybe the most beautiful and liveable city that I know of in America. Located on the ocean, with a warm but not scorching temperature….Southern culture, but also a little more progressive than some other Southern cities. Put all that together with a laid back population and it must be a great place to live.
And then this group, these kids going to a great college in a great town (that has been called one of the 5 most fun campuses in America) come to Lexington and upset three baseball teams they have no business beating to get to go to the NCAA super regionals. In all honesty, as I watched C of C beat UK last night, I had to smile. On Saturday night, I was in downtown Lexington and the players and some members of the coaching staff were hanging out together, obviously enjoying themselves and showcasing the laid back attitude that the campus permeates. I talked with one of the players and asked why he was out when he had a big game on Saturday and he said, “because its a beautiful night and this is the NCAA Tournament….come on, we have to have fun.”
That attitude showed during the tournament as C of C first beat Notre Dame, Ball St and then Kentucky, on their way to a stunning advancement to the final 16 of the NCAA Tournament. It was still however a great weekend for the Cats baseball program as they set a record for baseball attendance and created a buzz about the sport that has never been seen in this area before. A friend who works in the retail business told me has been flooded with requests for UK baseball gear, something that no one could have predicted. A big congrats goes to Coach Cohen and the players on the team. I admit to knowing none of their names or their backgrounds, but from what I saw this weekend, they seemed quite talented.
And in other news, the Rocket launches here on Tuesday. Hottest ticket in Lexington since the game where Pitino returned…..should be fun.
