College hoopers take anonymous survey

What the Fawkes?

Remember the hub-bub created by the ‘anonymous’ coaches polls from CBS and others that coincidentally came out at times in which Calipari-bashing seemed like a relevant topic? Well the folks over at Athlon Sports conducted an anonymous survey of college basketball players from 50 schools and 18 conferences. Not unlike most of you (okay, us) folks on the internet, these kids open their mouths a little wider than normal when they are hidden under the cloak on anonymity. I did find the coaches survey somewhat interesting, but I’ve always thought an anonymous player survey that covers the underbelly of college sports would be fascinating.

This survey contains on illicit question on whether booster benefits, but I was hoping for more. However, there are some UK digs thrown out there. Check out some of the results below:

Have you ever received benefits from a booster?
Yes (13.7%)
No (86.3%)

Have you ever had a grade changed because you were an athlete?
Yes (15.1%)
No (84.9%)

I found this very interesting. Wish there would have been more questions on this subject, especially since it’s anonymous and no one can get in trouble from it?

Who is the most overrated player you have faced?
Nerlens Noel, Kentucky (6.8%)
Kyle Wiltjer, Kentucky (6.8%)

Kyle and Nerlens tied for first. Considering only a handful of players have played against both, that’s interesting. Also, who has been touting Kyle has a superstar worthy of being ‘overrated’? Marquis Teague and Terrence Jones each got one vote as well. Their national title says otherwise.

Who would you like to trade places with for one day?

Pesident Obama (19.2%)
LeBron James (11.%)
[…]
Anthony Davis (2.7%)
AD is a role model. I can dig that.

Which other coach, other than your own, would you like to play for?
Mike Krzyzewski, Duke (21.9%)
John Calipari, Kentucky (12.3%)
Brad Stevens, Butler (9.6%)

Calipari gets some love here, but then…

Which other coach would you never play for?
Billy Gillispie, Recently fired Texas A&M (23.3%)
Frank Martin, South Carolina (16.4%)
Bob Knight, Retired (9.6%)
John Calipari, Kentucky (6.8%)
Bob Huggins, West Virginia (4.1%)

Weird. What kid wouldn’t want to join a players-first team under Cal? BCG at the top shows that the rest of the college basketball world now knows what we knew a couple years ago.

What is your favorite arena to play in, other than your own?
Rupp Arena, Kentucky (12.3%)
Madison Square Garden (12.3%)

Rupp tied with Madison Square Garden for first. That’s very reputable company to share the top spot with. Very cool.

Check out the above to see what else these kids said. Among other things, you’ll notice that Kim Kardashian’s monetary/marital abuse of NBA player Kris Humphries had not effect on college hoopers, as they voted her the hottest woman on earth. C’mon kids! If there is one thing all potential pro basketball players should know, it’s that you should stay as far away from anyone in the Kardashian family as possible.

These surveys are always skewed depending on the population they ask….the coaches poll probably asked no big names, only low level mid major and assistants. It would be interesting to know what type of programs these kids played for, if they are big name recruits or not…it would make a huge difference. For instance a slow white 2 gaurd isn’t going to say he’d want to play for cal…because he isn’t good enough to play that style, but coach k would be good.

I don’t believe that the percentage of respondees who believe that Nerlens and Kyle are overrated and the percentage of those who say they would never play for Calipari being exactly the same [6.8%] is a coincidence. Probably players who have never played against either Noel or Wiltjer and who are pissed that Cal didn’t want them.

I bet most who said they wouldn’t want to play for Cal are players who were passed over by Cal himself. Cant join ’em, hate ’em

Yuck–they also ranked the college stadiums, and Commonwealth came in 70th, behind places like Vanderbilt, East Carolina, and Wake Forest.

Notice they did not report the number of survey respondents or the percentage of those receiving the survey who actually did respond. Usually when a researcher does not cite essential info like this, they are hiding relevant info. Take this report with a few grains of salt. Meaningless data.

No way the percentage is that low on the amount of athletes that have received money from boosters. I played baseball for four years and we got free stuff every week. Same thing with the grades. Half the team never attended class and would get B’s. one kid quit half way through the semester and ended up failing.

Most of these kids said they spend 15 or fewer hours (INCLUDING CLASS TIME) on academics – then later, 75 percent said they’d be in college even if they didn’t play basketball.

The survey has 0 credibility – but it’s good for a laugh.

Is there something of importance to this post that I’m missing? Strikes me as a waste of everyone’s time, readers and players (who could be improving their game instead of responding to meaningless questions)

    FAIL.

These “private” surveys are ridiculous at best. I could conduct one of these by sitting in my basement staring at a wall with a pen and a piece of paper. Mostly just a bunch of Innuendo to get a couple more digs at UK, as they did with the token “private” coaches survey. Give me a break.

So, obviously they didn’t poll KY players. They obviously DID poll DUKE players. One, the fact they said they’d rather play for coach K than coach Cal, and two, a portion of them had accepted illegal funds. BUSTED!!!!

Billy G was not recently fired from Texas A & M as noted in the survey, try Texas Tech instead. Sorry to be the nerd police, but I’m right.
