Coach Stoops Reconnecting With the Past, Setting Stones for the Future

You most likely have heard by now how Coach Stoops sent out a care package to each former Kentucky football player currently playing in the NFL. All 19 of these players received hats, shirts, media guides, and personal letters from Coach Stoops himself wishing them luck in training camp for their respective teams and inviting them to come back to Lexington at any time. This is a small, yet very meaningful gesture from a man who most likely doesn’t know any of these players personally, and never spent time coaching any of them.

Kentucky basketball has a sense of “family” that comes with it. Coach Cal calls all of his players his “sons” and the players call each other “brothers”. When you hear “La Familia”, you think of the basketball team, not the football team. Kentucky football has never quite had the same sense of togetherness that the basketball team displays, and the only sense of family they’ve given off in the past is one with a lot of dysfunction. Coach Stoops offering out his hand to players who have already spent time at the program is a sign of things to come. Stoops is trying to unite this team and build a “players first program” (where have I heard that before?). Like any good relationships, it’s the little things that mean the most, and with stoops forging a bridge between the past and the present, this will do nothing but put Kentucky football in a positive light.

The goal is for these former players to wear their new Kentucky garb around their NFL teams, and to generate buzz about the uprising about the new coaching staff and program. Aside from winning games on the gridiron, the biggest challenge for Kentucky football is to have a complete and total attitude and image change around the program. Stoops is making Kentucky a hip, new and cool place to play football in the SEC, and with a top 10 recruiting class on the way for next year, I’d say he’s doing a pretty decent job so far. Many players, Randall Cobb among them, went to social media to voice their excitement over getting the care package and send a little bit of positive energy towards the upcoming season.

As 2. pointed out, Joker may not have done well at anything else, but he did the NFL care package thing. Stoops was told by UK football staff and they followed suit. I am more excited about Stoops than anyone. All in. But let’s not give credit where it isn’t due.

I was obviously half mocking this troll that’s been hanging around today by saying Joker was great. Glad to see Stoops showing former players some love.

What’s with holding the SEC in such high esteem? I mean sure Alabama, LSU, Florida, and maybe Georgia are typically the best teams in the country, but the rest of the conference, really the bottom 7 teams are junk. Without Alabama the SEC really isn’t all that tough. I mean look at UK.

    7. Whats the matter troll? The Loserville sports radio doesnt talk about how great UL’s new conference is. All those powerhouse football programs in the American Asswipe Conference dont get the accolades they so justly deserve right? Even UL would have trouble beating the middle of the pack SEC teams. Sure, you surprised Florida last year but any true football fan could tell that UF played like they didnt want to b there from the opening kickoff and they payed for it

Little brother has never more aptly described a program than our little bro Louisville.

Serious question. Do you UK fans not think you weaken the SEC brand?

@Serious Question – Probably not as much as 90 percent of the ACC teams weaken it’s brand. But to answer your question, yes. Considering how weak of a brand the SEC has I suppose UK would have to shoulder some of the blame. LOL. Get lost troll.

So what does UK contribute to SEC football? Other than the automatic wins, I mean.

They contribute enough to bring your sorry ass on here to talk about them. Doesn’t your little bird team do enough for you to go to their boards & comment?

14 – Get ready for the Blue World Order. On your knees wth your head bowed and yes lowered, you lost child of inner-city, meth cooking, back room trash, no life, little brother.
You are the prime example of the result of your mother’s social security check paying for your 40 year old, back of the trailer living, disappointment of a child, getting access to the web so you have something to do after pulling your part time shift at the car wash or steak and shake.
Whoever let this putrid piece of moronic trash enter the room, please quit shaking the U of L trailer just to see what comes out! The smell is horrible.

@Serious Question – You’re right. Maybe UK should join a weak conference, beat up on all the patsies, then thump their chests and pretend like they are a powerhouse program on par with the likes of the Alabama and LSU. Hmmmmmmm. Where have we seen this before?

#2 do you take things out of context much? The only points I’ve made are that when Joker brings in the ice cream truck he’s a moron but Stoops gets no grief for the shaved ice truck. And yes you made my point for me. The writer of this article gives Stoops credit for continuing a care package program Joker initiated. No one is a “troll”. I’m as excited about Stoops as any other Big Blue fan but I’m not excited to see the Fellowship of the Miserable attack every single thing an alum, former player and coach did just because he didn’t succeed as the head man. If you like attacking Joker for the very same things you laud Stoops for then so be it but know at best it makes you irrational and frankly everything that is wrong with BBN. I don’t have to attack the old coach to prove my excitement for the new one. Some of us just aren’t that petty.
