Coach O on the recruiting trail

You know what sounds like the ideal evening after a win against Auburn at home if you’re a coach? Well to me, I’d like to go home and relax after a day’s work. But not at UK – our coaches are working 24-7, as the recruiting world never stops spinning. Last night Coach Orlando Antigua did a little recruiting work. See below:

MiKyle McIntosh – 6’6 SF (2013) – Jackson, KY

According to @AdamZagoria and YouTube, Coach O sprinted down the road after the Auburn game to check out McIntosh again. Antigua watched McIntosh Friday night as well, but the kid tweaked his knee in the second quarter and only ended up with 5 points because of that. Looks like Antigua thought it was worth his time to go back Saturday night and see how he did.

Emmanuel Owootoah – 5’10 PG (2013) – Cordia, KY

Again according to Zagoria, Antigua has been on touch with former-Wildcat Rodrick Rhodes, who is Owootah’s coach at Cordia. Rhodes says he has never spoke with Coach Cal (ever), so this recruitment seems to be in the ever-ongoing ‘just checking in’ phase, as the UK staff is very accustomed to doing these days. With the 2013 class already packed full of insane talent, it is tough to see the Cats going for either of the home-state kids listed here. But worth keeping an eye on.

Zylan Cheatham 6’7 PF (2014) – Westwind Prep, AZ

This recruitment story is a little off topic and likely will not involved UK in the long run, but Garrett Tucker recalled an interesting story from Cheatham on his relationship with Antigua on this piece. Coach O made the trip to Arizona to watch Zylan, but did not extend an offer. This story does provide some interesting insight into O’s methods. Check out Cheatham’s quote, who claims O’s encouragement was very helpful, from the article:

“Coach [Orlando] Antigua told me he wanted to see how I reacted when I played against someone of my skill-level, size, and athleticism. He told me to keep working and some of the things that I needed to be working on, and that he would be following me in the future. The constructive criticism he gave me meant a lot. He is a great coach, so it’s hard to not listen to what he was saying.”

Nothing major going on, but the recruiting wheels are always in motion these days.

Coach O is probably keeping in touch with some of the lower ranked talent because Coach Cal has said before that he wants his assistants to get a HC Job eventually. This is the kind of talent that an assistant coach would likely get at a Head Coaching job at a mid to high major school.

Seriously, when is this site going to get out of 1999 and make users register to post comments? I’m getting tired of clicking on links in the comments section and seeing penises, transsexuals, poop, or a combination of the three. There are dozens of wordpress addons that also integrate Facebook commenting.

The staff is preparing for the doomsday scenario where everyone leaves early and we don’t get Randle or Wiggins. In this scenario (not altogether unrealistic) we will need a few more bodies.

Coach O gets a mid-major job soon and then replaces Cal when he decides to leave. O can coach ad recruit nationally.

What the hell is going on with kentucky basketball recruiting. I thought my buddy was joking about this but if its for real the cats are in some serious trouble.

The kid from Cordia has a offer from UCLA already. I don’t think we get him, but he is for real!
I hope Barnhart learned from the Joker mistake. If Coach O is going to be groomed to take over for Cal some day let him get a HC job and learn the job. The whole HC in waiting thing doesn’t seem to work out for coaches will no experience. C.M. newton did this with Tubby and Billy D, both got their first HC jobs because of Newtons recommendation. Coach O seems like the logical choice to follow Cal lets get him ready.

    13) UK has always looked at kids like this from instate. It helps the high school coaches plus it could lead to getting a capable walk on. Due to aid to instate players we could pick up a kid and not have to use a scholarship.

The kid from Jackson isn’t natively from here. He is part of the 22ft Academy, he doesn’t even play for his own high school team.

Look our high school played Emmanuel Owootoah’s Cordia team this past weak and he had 7 points and 7 turnovers against our team. If this kid is D1 then our point guard is because he had same amount of points and half the turnovers.

Adam Zagoria really needs to stop talking to Brandon Bender. He is destroying any credibility that he had (which was questionable in the first place).

Owootoah isn’t native to ky either. He’s a product of the Canadian pipeline in east ky right now. Brandon Bender ring a bell?
