Coach Cal’s New Year’s Resolutions

Yesterday, Coach Cal posted his New Year’s Resolutions on his website. And no, they didn’t include eating less Orange Leaf or not tweeting as much. His resolutions focused on the team and helping them get better as players and people:

More Breakfast Club

I’m trying to get them to understand you’ve got to be true friends to make this team work. You have to be there for each other through thick and thin, which means you really have to want to be around each other a lot. My number one goal for the next four months for this basketball team is to make them truly care about one another, more than they care for themselves, on and off the court. Become true friends.

Focus on individual and team improvement

As I move forward this year, I want to make sure that I’m doing two things and doing them really well. I want to focus on individual improvement (players getting better) and focus on our team getting better. The biggest hurdle and challenge I have is to keep the expectations of all of you out of my mind and focus solely on these young people.

Let the team grow on their timetable

My teams have improved over the course of the season but it’s always been on their timetable, not mine. My timetable would be Dec. 15. Normally their timetable is the middle of January, as late as February, which was last year’s team. When last year’s team got it, they were the best basketball team in the country.

Hanging up #8 is another good one, Coach.

I am okay with Cal wanting the players to become true friends but he needed to edit his post game comments when he said they need to touch each other more. It sounded bizarre.

Yeah, I think that last sentence is what Cal means when he talks about “keeping your expectations out of my mind.”

When he says touch each other more I think he means something like chest bumps and high fives. Too many minds in the gutter out there.

Is Cal refering to the mens team or the womens team here? Men generally like each other. It is the women who hate each other. Don’t confuse me. Men acting like women?

Concerns me that there may be some personality conflicts forming on the team. I don’t know how you “make” team mates like each other. We have the talent – we need the chemistry.

This is confusing. Everything I’ve read up to this point indicated that these guys already really liked each other and had real team chemistry. What have I missed?

Confusing to me also. Soon as I read this I woundered if we had a problem in the locker room of guys not getting along. All summer all we heard was how these guys were a happy family and then we had the ” breakfast club “. Hope nothing has happened to change all this.
