Coach Cal Talks Florida Loss

I know that you’re probably watching the Super Bowl right now, so let’s take this time to just finally close the door on the whole Florida debacle.

Hear what Coach Cal had to say about it.

If you don’t like watching video or you’re just too big of a Black Eyed Peas fan to divert your attention during halftime, here are some highlights:

– Regarding his not calling a time out on the last possession, Cal said, “I didn’t want them to press us, didn’t want them to do different things, didn’t want them to change to a zone.”

– On Terrence jacking up them threes: “I thought Terrence was tired. I played him too many minutes. I was the one that told him to take those threes. If you’re feeling it.”

– On relying on the freshmen: “I had no choice. It’s what we have.”

Go watch football.

    3. it is a common and usually preferred decision to NOT call a time out in that situation. Youre either a troll or you dont know anything, probably both. Knights shot goes in and I guess Cal is a coaching genius, easy to criticize after the fact. And I second guess coaches all the time, but every Div 1 coach…..every Div 1 coach, has forgotten more basketball knowledge than anyone commenting on this site has.

4 out of 5 true road games with 3 freshmen contributing more to the team than our 3 upperclassmen and you(the disgruntled fan with misplaced frustration). we have put ourselves in position to win all the games even with the sluggish starts and lapse of judgement and certain players not showing up. It is a real good thing that the NCAA tourny games are played on a nuetral court because Im pretty sure it will feel like the Rupp Arena to our boys. They have 3 weeks to figure these things out. plenty of time to gain a full head of steam, go on a win streak and build that confidence into the tourny.

#7 absolutely disagree. Cal is o for 2 in getting this decision right in the last week. It’s not necessarily about the statistics and what all the other teams do…it’s about this team and having an abundance of freshmen and no other leadership that knows what to do in these circumstances. Call the time out and get a play set up.

@10. your name suggests your profession. Please stick to it. it was the correct call. Sure we get time to set a play, but so do they get time to set up some good defensive. we are a much better transition team than florida plays transition defense. Knight got a good look he just happened to miss the shot. As for the ole miss game. we didnt call a timeout and got a wide open 3 point look from miller. so actually he is 2 for 2, it is the execution (which he cant control).

Start being real fans and be alittle more optimistic. When we play well and have our fans behind us (NCAA Tourny Atmosphere) we are nearly unbeatable.

These 4 road games we have lost are the true road games that test a team. Some are ready at this point and others arent just yet. At least we arent peaking to early like MSU. Now if we were losing by double digits 4 road games against this competition then okay i would agree with you, but we have lost all 4 of those games and had a chance to win each game.

i say we win out every other game except for @UT. and then all you so called UK fans will be on here saying I knew it all along.

BTW give some props to vargas. he contributed more than harrellson. I say start him next game and see what happens.

First, has anyone bothered to ask Cal why he went back to man when the zone was working? This team is what it is. We’re being lead by freshman because that’s all Cal has to work with and freshman screw up a lot. Not going to write off this year but i’m not really expecting much more than a sweet 16. Next year though….watch out!

Second, that was one of the worst halftime shows ever. It’s proof how far music has fallen when a group like that is so popular. It might work in the studio but that music isn’t made for a live show. Fergie cannot sing and butchered Sweet Child O’ Mine. I’m sure Slash was like “this stupid bitch can’t sing but i’m going to bang her anyway.” Poor Christina messed up the National Anthem and the commercials have been sh*t so far. At least we get to watch Masthey kick a few balls.

#7 Don’t waste your breath buddy, evidently there are only a very small handful of people who have actually played the game on here. A timeout would have resulted in a screen being set and BKnight or Lamb etc “it was gonna be Knight, it was always going to be Knight” taking the shot… And that’s what happened.

TBH I thought Jones stood for like 3 seconds without setting a screen to try and get the ball back to maybe drive to the basket for the tie, but Knight kept it and was open. It was almost a perfect dagger, but oh well, a bit short.

Cal cannot coach to save his life. He cuts every corner in the book when it comes to recruiting. He hasn’t worked an honest day in his life. Karma is catching up with Cal and UK. When you buy players, it’s only a matter of time before bad things start happening. I know, I know, Cal has a clean NCAA record. So does Mumme, Sutton and Jerry Tarkian. That is a typical UK fan, hick response when calling Cal out for who he is. He is a terrible bench coach. He fooled everyone when the good teams left CUSA and WWW started feeding him players. He beat up on JV squads with NBA players he cheated to get. What high level basketball player would go to freaking Memphis unless they got something in return. Most of you simpletons will never see it until it’s too late and your program is left in shambles.

    #31. thats hilarious!

What do people expect CAL to do in 2 years when his core upperclassmen are left overs from BCG. Oh BTW do you all realize that we lost 5 starters last year and now we are talking about being happy with an elite 8? I will not have a problem with a down year looking like this, so long as we put together a monster team every other year. It looks like that is going to be the pattern. Im cool with it. Go Big Blue.

I hate to bring this up too but I have too. We lost 5 players who were superstars and then a year later he recruits to have a 7 player rotation with 4 superstars and soem good role players. To bad we didnt get our Christmas wish with Enes.

We are ok guys calm down. and Poole doesnt get any PT because he shoots any chance he gets he wants to prove himself to much. he is a liability and will be gone next year possible vargas unless he shows us something in the nex month and a half.

The addition of Twany Beckham is poole’s replacement except he will get about 17 minutes per game.

i just don’t understand why people think that this team is going to make it all the way to the elite 8…i’m not bashing on the team nor am i going to bash on Cal…but this team will not make the elite 8…there are to many question marks…on top of that the players do not have any heart what so ever…TJones just simply isn’t smart enough to be the best player on an elite 8 team it is that simple…he is the worst decision maker with the basketball we have had since Porter…in fact since he takes so many shots he may even be worse…the the depth issue…we have no bigs and no depth on top of that…we have early round upset written all over us

as of today we are a 4 seed at best…not saying there isn’t room for improvement because there is…at the same time we could easily play our way into a 5 or 6 seed

This team doesn’t have the fun that they could be having.

The bright side is Lamb’s J, Jones’s occasional brilliance, and Liggin’s motor.

Yet, the combination of Knight and Miller’s lack of emotion almost clinically depressed status quo expressions have me pooping 2nd round over and out.

Not sure if we can do damage in tournys with kids not having any fun.

I like that he admitted to maybe needing to call more timeouts down the strech with this team. Who knows what the story is with Poole, has to be something going on behind the scenes. #36 do you watch the games? Knight is the only one who shows any kind of leadership, passion, or emotion on the court unless you count Jones skipping down the court after a dunk as emotion. Miller looks like a scared bunny rabit 90% of the time though I’ll give you that though. We’ll be fine, the kids feed off the BBN and all the tournament games SEC and NCAA will be like home games for them so that will give them a huge lift to do better than people are thinking they will. Jones going 7-18 is starting to become to much of a trend kid needs to post up until he is blue in the face.

Hey 39, you make a great point about our team feeding off the BBN. And that is why we need to stay positive towards this team.
I will say this again…this is our rebuilding year! Last year was so out of the ordinary its just not even fair to compare the two teams. We need to give Cal his 5 years to build HIS program, if we suck after that then I’m sure most of us will be unhappy. But the problem with all the dumb asses that bitch like little cry babies when we loose is this…who would want to play or coach for morons like you. You can’t be pleased, ever. The point I’m making is, you little whinnying know it alls are giving bad energy for our team to Feed on. I can accept being pissed we lost and making an opinion known but move on without bashing Cal and our team. Move on and get behind your team. Have some pride for God’s sake!
Also, I lived in Louisville for a while. Went to culinary school and cooked in 20 different restaurants. Lots of cool people there and a ton of stuff to do. So when I read trolls on this board like 19, I can only imagine in my mind what a looser this person must be. #17 you are exactly right. We come back from 13 down in a zone and take the lead then switch to
man to man the last 3 possessions. They score on all three and we lose the game. And again he
HAS TO CALL the time out at the end and get the FRESHMAN on the same page!

ok lets say for the past two weeks Cal does call a timeout. that pleases you right? okay so he draws up a play and we still don’t make the shot, does that make it better? he’s the best thing that has happened to UK basketball in a long time and we complain like this. its an embarrasment to be link to other UK fans sometimes. We lose Cal, who we gonna get? You run him out of town and might as well shut down the program. He is playing 6 players, come on lets be realistic. The 6th man off the bench is Vargas……

Cal was right that we failed to box out twice at crunch time. You cannot leave a man unattended to rebound and score. That is just basic basketball. We are not mentally tough when it counts.

Why cry over spilled milk…They played a poor game and expected to win, WHY..
Way to many turn overs, can’t give up the ball like that and expect win on the road.
Missed free throws, the game can be won or lost here, and UK has let many chances go by with missed free throws this season.
Rebounding…The Gators got at 4 very easy put backs for easy baskets, two of them in the closing minutes of the game to stay ahead..Not blocking out, and gang crashing the boards.
Lots of mistakes by this young UK team, and you just can’t win any games making mistakes they make playing on the road in the SEC..Another thing, every game Matt Jones the head man of KSR has said UK would win, they have lost..so Matt stop running off at the mouth about how UK is going to win a game…….
