Coach Cal perceived as biggest cheater by poll of 100 coaches

“Joe B told me to go and switch the style up; and if they hate, then let ’em hate, and watch the titles pile up.”

Well, we can’t act like we didn’t see this one coming. We’ve known all week that CBSSports.com would released its “Who is perceived by college coaches to be the biggest cheater” exclusive from a poll of coaches, and here it is, looking just like we expected.

Our very own John Vincent Calipari is the biggest cheater in college basketball, as voted on by his peers and fellow coaches. Scott Drew is a close second:

John Calipari (Kentucky): 36 percent
Scott Drew (Baylor): 34 percent
Ben Howland (UCLA): 12 percent
Jim Calhoun (Connecticut): 7 percent
Tom Crean (Indiana): 3 percent
Dave Rice (UNLV): 3 percent

One coach said, “Cal probably doesn’t have to cheat now as much as he used to, but he’s still the standard. The rest of us can’t even deal in his league. He’s the best.”

Another said, “They all [expletive] cheat. Every high-level coach cheats.”

Big Blue Nation says, “Haters gonna hate.”

I could have told you that when they announced this article was coming. We all know Calipari’s not cheating. But the other jealous coaches/fans continue to say “well he must be cheating” and “when there’s smoke there’s fire.” Don’t try to blind these people with simple facts. They just get in the way.

I’m guessing a lot of this poll has to do with butt hurt coaches who lost out on recruits, not so much cheating.

Maybe Coach Cal and all on that list win because they are better, try harder, smarter, better coached ect than those polled….NAHHHH it’s cause they cheat.I KNOW I”M A GOOD COACH I JUST ODN”T WIN CAUSE I DON’T CHEAT>>>>>>

Also, if this wasn’t the most loaded question. You spend all week on the World Wide Wes case, make connections to UK and then follow it up with a “who’s the biggest cheat”… of course they’re all going to say Cal given the context of the questioning.

And some other coaches probably deserved vacations (Coach K with Maggette; Ole Roy may yet get one but probably not; Calhoun gets caught cheating a lot and you wonder if he cheated for one of his titles).

There are multiple “elite” coaches who have been penalized, found guilty, as it were, for cheating, yet except for Calhoun, most of them get ignored.

The interesting thing is that the question is phrased to get the result. They could have asked “who do you think is the biggest cheater?” but they asked “who is perceived as the biggest cheater?” so the coaches aren’t saying they think cal’s a cheater — they are saying that they think others believe him to be a cheater. it’s an important choice made by the survey designer.

As much as I have enjoyed the wins and rebuilding “the brand ” my gut tells me in the future we will wish we never hired Cal and we will look back like we were played as fools.I know that Cal knows no one is watched as much as he is and would be stupid to cut recruiting corners. But, with the one and done types you have to make deals with many devils and your hands get dirty. Take Bledsoe for instance ,no matter what investigation came up with, a guy like him passed Algebra 2 before taking Algebra 1?????? As Cal himself would say “are you serious”??? Cal is a marked man that will not be given ANY slack if anything comes up and our program will pay dearly for the reputation he had before he even got here.I hate to say it but the fall will not be worth it.

The all time cheating champ was Wooden, who did it very politely. The present champ is Calhoun who should be fired and banned from the game for a number of reasons, Boeheim too. It couldn’t be that Cal outcoaches these other coaches. If it becomes clear he does cheat, I will be as happy to see him go as I was Joe Hall (for reasons that never became public). But there is no sign of that at all, and in fact there wasn’t at Memphis or UMass – not that HE was involved, and the Rose situation is still bizarre – cleared twice, but after the fact accused and convicted in effect?
This is similar to those polls showing a similar percentage think Obama was born in Kenya. Facts never get in the way for some people.

#21 LOL, That’s what Memphis fans probably said after Cal came there. “He may have cheated elsewhere, but he doesn’t here.” Who knows. As #23 says, recruiting one and dones requires making some deals with the devil. I’m guessing that if Cal ever lands UK in hot water, it will essentially be the same deal as what happened at Umass/Memphis. In other words, Cal won’t outwardly cheat, but he may get in trouble taking a kid that has cheated, or been to a less than reputable prep school, or got paid under the table by an agent, etc.

#34 exactly why kids like Chris Walker do not get offers from Cal. Sure he took a risk on Enes Kanter, but what coach in America wouldn’t have taken a risk. And as far as the class of kids he has brought to UK, they “cheating” is few and far between. I am not foolish enough to believe that Cal does everything skeaky clean, but UK basketball sells itself, and first-round lottery picks also sells itself and so does Final Fours and National Championships.

I may as well get in on this too. A lengthy article in Sports Ill several years ago covered the Camby situation (you can still find it on the ‘net). There was not one mention of Coach Cal doing anything wrong. It was Camby and Camby alone. Very similar to the McDaniel’s situation at Western, the school was punished but the coach did nothing wrong. As others have pointed out, the Rose situation is bizarre, he’s cleared to play and then after the season, he’s declared ineligible and Memphis is punished. If the NCAA was required to play this game legally, that could have never happened. I’d say the samething if Rose attended Duke and it happened to them (and I hate Duke). My point, if people are using these two situations to “prove” Cal is a cheater, they are clearly not looking at the facts. Of course, we know Americans don’t look at the facts only the 15 seconds sound bites.

One thing is for sure. If Cal is never caught cheating at UK, it won’t be for a lack of effort on the part of jealous and bitter rival fans, coaches, and media. It’s amazing that with all of these people that have supposed “firsthand knowledge” of Cal cheating at UK that none of them have handed this evidence over to the NCAA. What’s their motivation for protecting Cal and UK? We’ve heard the same refrain from them for over 3 years now – “it’s just a matter of time…velcro banners…blah blah blah” – and I imagine we’ll continue to hear the same regurgitated garbage for the next 7 years or however long Cal is here. I’m afraid they’re all going to die from holding their breath while waiting for it to happen.

Everyone on hear acts like a Coach doesnt know every single thing about a kid before he offers him a scholarship. the Coach knows what the kid eats for breakfast and which shoe he ties first, he certainly knows about the kids schooling and how he got his grades. So those of you who claim Coach Cal didnt know about the kids at Umass and Memphis you are surely mistaken. He just made a judgement call and thought they could get away with it, while knowing he wasnt responsible for their eligibility. Its happening now too, he knew about bledsoe, but every coach does this. why do you think so many kids sign and then dont qualify?

As far as I’m concerned, Drew and Calhoun should be 1 and 2 since they are currently on probation. Howland is probably 3. They all do questionable things though. Tubby did, all the WKU coaches did while I was there and still do, and every other coach in America.

  51. Explorer

#34 and others, it drives me crazy when people say Memphis and Umass were in hot water. The coaches or schools were never accused of or guilty of cheating. They both had players that were determined after the season ended to be ineligible. Therefore the wins had to be forfeited. No one was ever found to be cheating in regards to recruiting practices or other day to day to operation of the programs.

  52. Rockfield, KY
    12:47 pm August 10, 2012 Permalink

    23. The thing about Cal, is if something is going down that is dangerous, he stays far away from it, even if he actually knows about it. Other coaches are the ones actually calling the shots. If the same two things happend to Coach K (one actually did, see Maggette) then the Finals Fours are never even vacated.

I am in sales. I never told my boss I lost a sale because the other guy was better than me. Its the same thing here. If these coaches are getting routinely beat on the recruiting trail and court then the other guy has to be cheating. It is human nature and these guys have bosses that pay them millions of dollars for results. This is why there are never any specifics associated with the specifics.

A big difference in answering the question “who is the perceived biggest cheater” versus “who is the biggest cheater”. I think Coach Cal is perceived by the media and rival fans to be a cheater. So the coaches answered the question accurately. However, the coaches may have answered the question who “is” the biggest cheater much differently.

    53) Like Indiana saying they don’t want One-And-Done players, and Pitino saying he couldn’t bear to only coach guys for a few months.

They all act like Cal loves One-And-Done, while he preaches against it more than the rest of them combined. The difference is he takes full advantage of the best players, while they don’t know how to attract or coach them.

Cal actually turns down Top 10 kids if he sees them as character issues (or having handlers with hands out). Yet he’s supposedly the one cheating.

It should be a 3-way tie between Scott Drew, Jim Calhoun & Jim Boeheim.

Jeff Capel is trying to clean up his image by being on Coach K’s staff because he was also very dirty at Oklahoma.

So please don’t tell your friends that “CBSSports.com called John Calipari and Scott Drew cheaters,” because we’ve actually done nothing of the sort.
