University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

Coach Cal gets it… UK football, that is.

Five minutes before John Calipari took the court with his Dominican Republic National Team for a game, he picked up the phone and gave Joker Phillips a call. As Joker told the story to the media today, Cal asked Joker to put the phone on speaker and hand it to the young man next to him. That young man was a star athlete in town for the weekend for a visit with the UK football program.

It’s not something Calipari had to do. A football recruiting visit shouldn’t have even been on his mind. But Cal took a second to pick up the phone, minutes before a basketball game, to say hello to a young man I’m sure he’s never met, just to lend a hand to Joker and the football program.

“That’s big,” Joker Phillips said. “How many coaches would do that?”

“He and I have a great working relationship.”

“We’re selling everything there is to sell about Kentucky, we’re selling to our football recruits.”

“Our basketball program is one of those selling points.”

Calipari is a better football coach than Joker.

Agreed. Who wouldn’t want to be a big football recruit who goes to the basketball game and gets tons of recognition on camera? Look at RGIII last year, he was always at Baylor’s BBall games, and he was ALWAYS on camera. I would want to be known as the recruit who helped turn a program around and have a top-tier sport to try to raise the level up to. You can come in thinking “I want this football program to be on the same level as the basketball program.” I think Cal going out of his way to do that helps our team out a lot.

Another reason why Cal is the best.

This is outrageous. What more does Cal have to do– take the clipboard from him? There is no excuse going to Kentucky to play football isn’t as big as going to play for Kentucky basketball. The fanbase is here. The passion is here. We have to be able to fill the stadium and get some bowl revenue and exposure before we get the facilities. Unforunately, the Atheltic Director and head coach are simply not there. Cliff Hagan sports complex and a new track and field stadium is an absolute farce. Mitch Barnhart has made repeated mistakes since he has been ther. Rich Brooks left a bare cupboard and truthfully did not accomplish nearly as muscch as he’s given credit for. Joker Phillips has had a track record of bad play calling and mismanaged game situations. Now it’s absolutley time for him to go along with this pitiful excuse for a caoching staff. Not to mention the silver platter schedules UK football has ben gifted in the last seven years. Time for a new direction.

#4 Ur an idiot. Is UK the only school with other athletic programs….no. Is Mitch Barnhart an athletic director or solely a football director? You do realize our baseball team got shafted from hosting a regional bc of the facilities right? If u ever have kids and they are good enough to play a sport at UK, would u say, no we want awful things and no scholarship, u should give it to the football team…not everyone can be good at football pal

Wow, you stole the show with that ridiculous comment. Silver platter schedule? HA!!! What a joke, I don’t even want to waste my time about how stupid that comment is. You have a problem with the brand new track & field complex? Stanford’s coach didn’t. Joker mismanaged that UT game, darn I wish I had that one back. You think Barnhart is a bad AD? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, why don’t you pay attention to UK sports more often. Quit making senseless statements.

This does not bode well for Kentucky. Coach Cal is panicking as a result of only having one recruit for the 2013 (who ain’t that good anyway) class, so he is trying to justify his contract by trying to take credit for the football program’s success. The UK Football brass must be worried sick that this will result in a vacated season (this happened to Cal at UMass and Memphis). Coach Phillips now knows that he might as well not try to win as those games will not count. I’m no betting man, but if UK goes winless in the SEC on the gridiron, the blame is likely to be placed firmly on Coach Cal’s (expensive) desk. This will put pressure on Coach Cal to improve his team in 2012-13 from last year’s standard. Problem is, there is nowhere to go but down. Get ready for a long Fall and even longer Spring in Lexington, Cats fans.

I’m sorry but truth is why would a player come here because we have a good basketball program? That’s like a player going to play basketball at Georgia because they have a good football program. Really good and thoughtful of cal though!!

    6. He’s actually EXACTLY right about the “silver platter schedule”. We have made bowl games simply by beating 3 horrendous non conference opponents, a mediocre to really bad Louisville and 2 SEC bottom feeders. Although his blood pressure is a little to high for my liking he’s not far off base except for the Rich Brooks comments. We were a total debacle when Brooks took over and while we never became anything special, we certainly improved greatly in his time. Prior to him not there weren’t 4-6 cupcake games to be found to put on our schedule.

So Joker gets a phone call and Cal gets Jokers recruiting budget. That’s not much of a deal.

Their is nothing wrong with constructive criticism , but some people seem to enjoy bashing others & that is plain ignorant.. Coach Joker Phillips is our COACH & I cant understand how anyone can listen to Jeremy Jarmon without wanting to support OUR TEAM {TEAM INCLUDES THE COACH}.. Imagine if your son was playing for U.K. ,Would’nt you want a coach who puts teaching MORALS/VALUES ahead of his own job security/wins {ie~selling drugs/public intox}.. My point being im a fan of THE ENTIRE TEAM & I would rather have our players lose on the field instead of in life .. GO CATS !!

So, if this kid signs with Joker, then you basketball lovin’, football hatin’ guys will claim that Cal has to do Joker’s recruiting and if Joker wins, he did it with Cal’s “players”!!!

17….that’s funny…..and for the Record…..I Like Joker….I just think we need either an “Air Attack” offense…or a Triple Option….that is the only way UK will be a “winner” in the SEC….

Um, #4, you must not know that Mitch Barnhart’s “repeated mistakes” just led the UK Athletics Dept. to a #2 overall ranking in the entire country. Oh, and yeah, Brooks didn’t accomplish much, except winning 7 or more games and reaching a bowl game in 4 straight seasons – something never before done by UK football – and having 4 straight winning seasons, something not done by a UK coach since Bear Bryant did it ending in 1953. Heck, even the “bad play calling” and “mismanag[ing]” Joker Phillips teams have won 6 and 5 games the last 2 years, something UK had only done in back to back years a handful of times or so in the last 40 years before Brooks started it in 2006.

The addition of an extra game to the annual schedule has helped pad the yearly total numbers, but the fact is that UK football is arguably as good as, or better than, it has been at any time since the 1950’s, with the possible exception of a couple of Fran Curci years in the 1970’s – where it should be noted the program was put on probation.

    20. First, in the worst move in history, Mitch Barnhart hired Billy Gillispie. This should have warranted immediate termination at the least. Heck, even you can look good as AD at UK when all you got to do is let a living legend like Cal do his thing.
Second, see my silver platter description of UK’s schedule over the Brooks and Phillips years. It’s a cake walk for any top 40 team to make a bowl.

    21) When has UK ever been a consistent top 40 program (without cheating)? When was the last time we beat a number 1 team (LSU)? On the whole, Mitch has done an excellent job given the circumstances. A number 2 finish in the Capital One Cup is nothing to sneeze at.

I would prefer to finish second in the Crockett Cup, but second in the Capital One Cup is highly respectable by any measure. Mitch, aside from a few missteps here and there, has done a great job.

By the way, it’s a sad statement when, at media days, the most people can think to talk to your football coach about is the basketball program.
