It was not until approximately 2 hours ago that I realized that today is a national holiday honoring Christopher Columbus. It is easy to forget Columbus Day for the primary reason that it is by far the least celebrated national holiday left on our calendar. When was the last time you heard someone say, “I gotta get ready, its Christopher Columbus Day!” In fact, I believe that we see more celebrations for Earth Day than we do for Mr. Columbus. Yet Columbus (who in 1492, sailed the ocean blue) still is able to allow thousands of federal employees the ability to be off of work and to rest for no particular reason. That type of pull is magical and is something that Abraham Lincoln and George Washington lost as individuals long ago. While those of us in Kentucky have yet to fully embrace the greatness of Columbus Day (the courthouse is open and I have a hearing this morning), it does make me feel good to know that as you read this, somewhere a federal employee is lying on the couch or possibly watching “The View”, in order to fully honor the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. So I salute you Christopher Columbus…your ability to get lost, helped spread civilization, disease and funny hats all over the globe.
To some brief news items:
(1): The big news of the day is the new situation at Quarterback for the UK football Cats. Mike Hartline had an MRI done on Sunday and the results wont be fully known until Monday, but things dont look good. That means that the QB position is now a race and it isnt clear who will end up in the lead. Rich Brooks said that UK will not play Randall Cobb for the entire game because of the disruption to the general offense, but will make more packages for him as a “Wildcat” QB. Will Fidler will now share snaps in practice with Morgan Newton, who will see his redshirt officially come off, as he joins the Quarterback tengo. We will have more on this situation later today, but in the end, it looks like Fidler/Cobb for next week and then anything is possible for the three game home stretch that will follow.
(2): UK did get some football recruiting news tonight courtesty of TCP, which reported that 4 star receiver Dyjuan Lewis has narrowed his list to three and his schools are Kentucky, Cincinnati and Purdue. Lewis is ranked as the #18 receiver in America and could potentially be one of the biggest recruits UK has had at the position in years. Lewis is from Indianapolis and knows Morgan Newton and the staff is selling Lewis on the idea that he will get to play with Newton when he arrives in Lexington. The SEC is a huge selling point for Lewis and the Cats making the final list is a huge step…but closing the door on Lewis (and another 3-5 top recruits) will determine whether Rich Brooks’ high rish strategy of waiting on the top recruits will pay off this year.
(3): This is a big week for basketball as the UK season gets going with 2 big events this week, Media Day on Thursday and Big Blue Madness on Friday. The Media Day on Thursday will be the first of the John Calipari era and will feature full interviews will all players and Cal’s second chance to meet the entire UK media crew at once. We will have coverage on here all day Thursday, including live blogs from the event. Friday is of course Big Blue Madness and rumors are still spreading about the tone of the event. I was told late last week that even as late as Wednesday of last week, final plans had not been completed and it was still up in the air as to the final events. So stay tuned, and believe nothing of what you read…unless we write it, at which point you can believe it a little bit.
(4): Finally, I spoke with a former player this weekend that told me that he believes DeAndre Liggins will be the “X factor” that no one is discussing who could be the biggest difference for the team this season. According to the former Cat, Liggins looks “like a different person on the court. He laughs, plays loose, makes mistakes and makes great plays…all things he couldnt do last year. DeAndre is the only player on the team who is able to slow down John Wall even a bit due to his length and speed, and he is perfect for Cal’s offense. Just wait, you will see.” Those words got me excited and I thought were worth sharing on a Monday morning.
More all day as we get ready for the start of basketball excitement and Auburn football. It should be exciting….
