On a night where I spent entirely too much time watching John King play with his goofy digital map of Gary, Indiana, we are left with little in the way of news. But a story that I think has not gotten enough play today was Thomas’ revelation that Kelenna Azubuike is one of the celebrity speakers at an African Poverty Summit in Tanzania. Joining world leaders from all over the globe will be Jesse Jackson, Chris Tucker and Kelenna Azubuike. How in the world did anyone come up with that lineup? I understand Jesse…..he goes anywhere someone pays for a ticket. I kind of understand Chris Tucker….I know he does a great deal of work on the Africa AIDS issue….even though he is a slightly marginal actor to have as a headliner. But as much as I love him, Kelenna? I mean was Monta Ellis busy or something? I am sure there is a connection that I dont know, but pulling our man with the nasty dunk as a headliner is a bit odd. Or it could simply be the case that the Summit needed one politician, one comedic actor and one former UK player. If that is the case, then the poll on the right hand side will let you pick who should be next year’s lineup. Your choice!!!!!
A couple of notes….
(1): People are understandably excited about the commitment of Vinny Zollo. But none may be as happy as Gillispie….from Larry Vaught’s article on the kid for the Danville Advocate:
His mother, Robin Curry, agreed. She said she felt “comfortable” at Kentucky and was moved by Gillispie’s compassion.
“For coach Gillispie to cry and tell us it was the best day of his life and to tell Vinny he wanted him more than any recruit he had ever got, that was something. He didn’t have to say that,” Curry said. “Then he told us he was just a big baby and he cried. I am a big baby, too, I cried. Vinny was crying. It was emotional. But I just couldn’t see any college providing for Vinny like Kentucky will.
“I feel that strongly about Kentucky. They touch every base. We have been on other recruiting trips. But those other trips we have taken did not compare or even get close to Kentucky.”
Now I know Billy is an emotional guy and I like that. I have been known to shed some tears in my day and I aint ashamed. But I have to admit that the whole crying in front of a recruit thing is odd to me. Coach K did it with Patrick Patterson and we (and all UK fans) mocked him mercilessly on this blog. I hope this isnt a normal thing. And “best day of his life”? I hope thats not true. A little weird for my taste. But hey, we do have a stash of “My Cousin Vinny” jokes ready for headline writers for many years to come. I will certainly root for this “UTE”.
(2): Good academic news today for the Cats. The UK basketball team performed higher than the national average on the academic rate meter and ensures that they will be in a comfortable situation in the years to come. This is big news for the Cats as it allows them some flexibility on recruiting and keeps them out of the danger zone that some programs will find themselves in over the next couple of years. This score, which is averaged over four years, owes a lot to guys like Bobby Perry, Woo, Ravi Moss, Mike Williams, Mark Coury, etc, who have kept their grades high and the overall team score high. Over the years this measure will play a huge role on what happens on the court, so they should be saluted.
Joker Phillips will be on the show tomorrow at 8 pm to talk about the team after Spring Practice. Check it out. Later today we will begin the “Kentucky County Learnin'” feature that will extend through the summer. When will our review of your county hit the site? Stay tuned…..
