Chester blames liberal socialism for Kentucky’s tournament snub

Chester, one of our favorite radio show callers, is frustrated with Kentucky’s NIT bid and he points the finger at liberal socialists for the NCAA tournament snub. He called in from sitting in his truck in the rain to say, “That mindset is creeping its way into everything, that we gotta make everything a level playing field. Let me tell ya, them conferences ain’t on a level playing field.”

I despise re-posted comments, but when I came back to site, I see a second KSR post about Chester’s call this morning. I feel the same now as a few minutes ago, so I apologize to the readers who may have read this before, but I have to say it again. Drew, I thought better of you than that you would milk KSR followers’ calls & posts for all you can get from them. You are encouraging the media behavior I fear may happen.

    >>I really, really hope some flea bitten website/blogger doesn’t personally hassle (meaning sift his trash, interview his neighbors, look up his political affiliation, etc, and in general crucify) Chester for saying what’s on his mind in a way that was far more civil than what we hear from our political leaders on a daily basis. “DLS” comes in way behind the insults and threats posted on KSR yesterday. I say let Chester speak and just move on. He’s a UK fan, I’m a UK fan and if I do or do not agree with his political views, it’s not life or death, it’s a basketball tournament. Hope the headline hungry media let him live his life — He’s not hurting anyone.<<

#22 makes a reference to murdering Ashley Judd (Simon Birch kills her in the movie, for those that dont know) and expects us to “pay attention” to that train of thought. As #17 stated, this is why the rest of the country looks down on Kentucky. What a shame.

There has been a trent to let the teams from the “less fortunate” leagues in the tournament, even with less talent and less quality wins than teams from power conferences. Some call it “parity,” but truth is its just “charity.” That seems to be the rules of the game, so I have no problem with the Cats being left out this year. But don’t get me wrong, each year several less fortunate programs get a hand out from the NCAA selection committee because its considered the right thing to do. Were the Cats one of the best 68 teams in college basketball? Yes. Would they advanced very far in the tournament? No. Let’s move on to next year.

Liberals are all about change (like Obama). Lets change from our traditions that we’ve held over the last 200plus years…like family values, freedom of religion, the 2nd amendment and the rest of the constitution that our forefathers fought and died for. Lets all change to gay marriage, freedom FROM religion, no guns for anyone unless everyone knows you have it, and to hell with the constitution…And lets just keep on aborting those innocent unborn babies and the ones that do live, lets burden them with debt and high taxes. And no matter what your reason for voting for that freak of a socialist/president we have…you voted for abortion. Lets have a UN backed one world government. Change????Yeah right. This is NOT my fathers America and it is going the opposite direction of the America I love and believe in. Ashley Judd???Yeah right.
My Uk does NOT deserve an NCAA bid and at this moment I would be more than glad to blame liberals for that. I hope Matt is right and most of these guys come back. Next years team is going to be a monster.

Chester’s claim is this: a desire, rooted in egalitarian socialism, has become so pervasive in this country that we cannot any longer reward the winners with their rightful slice of the pie, and instead must cut it down further and spread it out for the undeserving. Chester isn’t claiming that UK has a top notch team. He is claiming that, head-to-head, UK has a better track record, has outperformed, and would undoubtedly beat those teams which claimed the last few spots in the tourney. No one honestly believes MTSU or Saint Mary’s had a more impressive season or would take down UK in a one game scenario. To believe so would be to embrace stupidity. Furthermore, to think that the nation’s political hue does not bleed over into fringe activities like collegiate sports would be tantamount to turning a blind eye to history (ask Texas Western or Prop 48) and our current socio-political climate. I’m not saying Chester was right in his assertion, but to laugh off his suggestion as crazy talk is myopic to the point of needing some extra help and a caterpillar to get that head out of the sand.

The selection committee chairman actually said that he thinks this could be the best tournament of all time. If by ‘the best’, he means a tournament where mediocre top seeds and teams with terrible road records and padded schedules will battle it out with no real idea of who could win, then yes. I’m sure it will.

  61. The Jesus
    6:06 pm March 18, 2013 Permalink

I’m a liberal or “progressive” if you wish. That being said, Chester is right in a sense. MTSU and La Salle didn’t deserve to get in the tournament, and they got in not because they had better resumes than other teams, but because the committee wanted to put in non-power 6 bubble teams. Throw Kentucky out of the equation if you want. There are other power conference teams that had far better resumes than MTSU. The reason I a “damn liberal socialist” sort of agree with him, is that I don’t think the philosophies behind welfare and affirmative action (things I support) should be applied to things like basketball tournaments which have no effect on a person’s quality of life or equality of opportunity to live without the stresses of hunger, homelessness, real discrimination, or otherwise live healthy productive lives. So if you can, look past Chester’s nonsense a bit, and I think you’ll see that while our players certainly did not perform and play hard in a way that is deserving of a bid, their resume was far better than teams that were thrown into the field simply because they are small schools from bad conferences.

To be more clear…the philosophies that inform progressive policy positions on things like welfare are for the purpose of offering a government response to social ills. That’s an important part of a civilized society and is the humane thing to do. Putting a bad basketball team in a tournament it doesn’t deserve to be in isn’t about equality of opportunity or being humane, it’s about meaningless agenda pushing. Can’t afford healthy food? We need to do something about it as a society? Can’t access adequate healthcare or quality education? Let’s try to fix that. Can’t beat enough quality teams to get into the NCAA Tournament? Too bad. That’s not a real life issue. It’s a freaking basketball tournament.
