Cheer Up, Sunshine! Things Can Be Worse!

…not that there’s anything wrong with that…

Woe is our football program! For our fans have no hope, our coaches and players are drowning in negativity. Surely at 5-2, we stand on some level of hell.

Look! A few levels down are the Texas A&M program!

Its fair to assume that Texas A&M fans love football more than we do. The have a stadium that seats 88,000 people. Students compete ferociously for Yell Leader. Your football fanbase is referred to as “the 12th man“.

After the firing of publisher Dennis Franchione, current head coach Mike Sherman has led the Aggies to a 2-5 record overall (0-3 Big 12) and lost four of their last five games at Kyle Field. Before this week’s loss to Texas Tech, Sherman issued a press release to the A&M student body, asking for patience. Some of the A&M blogs have handled their misfortune with patience and reason. Meanwhile, another fan’s blog has flipped on the “PANIC!” sign:

Just look at the empty seats this past Saturday against K-State in our Big 12 opener at 1 pm on a beautiful fall day. here had to have been 10,000 empty seats at kick-off and another 15,000 left the game before 4:30 left in the fourth quarter. That’s right: 25,000 empty seats in the middle of the 4th quarter during our Big 12 opener. That’s almost treason at a Texas A&M game. The coaching on the field was horrible and the fans were actually silent most of the game. It was literally a graveyard sound-wise. Then Sherman, unemotional and sloppily dressed, went for it 2 times with the same play bringing in J-Train for the creative “up the middle” call. The alumni were furious and worn out of this decade-old repeat of pathetic play and after-game excuses.

Note: Above emphasis mine.

Two points to contrast with the Wildcats. First, roughly 25,000 to 35,000 of the the 70,000 attendees in Commonwealth Stadium left before the end of the game. This Texas A&M fan feels that 25,000 fans (out of 86,000) leaving is “almost treason”. Secondly, the blog’s doomsaying is reminiscent of Concerned in the Dark Tubby Days. So I don’t think we should take it as seriously as Orson.

So, is it nice that our fan base has been negative (according to Coach Brooks) without going into “Concerned” madness? Should we thank our lucky 5-2 stars that we still have a shot at 6 or 7 wins in a year where picked to finish at the bottom of the SEC East again? Do we even care if we win, if we can’t put out a pretty offense?

Life in hell is so confusing.
