Checking in with Names of the Past

Marshall

As we move through the down week of Kentucky basketball with no games and little to focus on beyond injuries, I thought it might be a good time to look and see what a couple of recruiting names of the past have done in their initial college basketball games. Longtime readers of this blog know that I had a soft spot for Marshall Moses and Jai Lucas, thanks largely to their epic performances on our radio show. Marshall Moses did the best Dick Vitale impersonation known to man, including doing Vitale calling one of his games in Rupp Arena. Alas it was not to be as Kentucky passed on him and left Moses at Oklahoma state. Well Marshall began his season last night in a game where his Cowboys lost to North Texas 82-73. The Mean Green got a big win against Sean Sutton and his turkey neck and Moses only played for 2 minutes, scoring no points. We shall see what happens as the year goes on, but the real news is that Marshall did qualify (which was a question) and is now ready to fire it up in Stillwater.

Likely our favorite guest ever on Kentucky Sports Radio was Jai Lucas, who initially won the crew over by showing Mosley and I how to do the “Shoulder Lean” back at the Nike Camp in Indy (well at least when Mosley was not busy trying to interview Michael Auriemma, UCONN women’s coach Geno’s kid). Lucas was always funny and entertaining and could do a mean impersonation of Tomlin’s voice when he wasnt around. Jai has begun his career at Florida and is averaging 9 points a game and is the team’s starting point guard. Lucas is already leading the team in minutes and assists and promises to be a thorn in UK’s side for a long time to come.

In other news, tonight is when we see how good those pesky Gardner-Webb kids are as they play UCONN in New York. CNNSI followed Gardner-Webb around NYC perpetuating the story that these are “bright-eyed” kids enjoying the big city and gosh darn it, they cant believe all those bright lights! But in reality, I am pulling for the guys and want to see them perform well. The little guy is always my guy, even when one of them looks like Powder below.
