Charlie Strong’s new deal keeps him in Louisville through 2020

After turning down Tennessee, Charlie Strong is ready to make his future in Louisville a little more permanent. According to ESPN’s Brett McMurphy, Strong will receive a new 8-year deal that will keep him in the ‘Ville until 2020.

Dollar figures have yet to be released, but let’s just say the University might want to add another corporate sponsor. Leave your suggestions in the comments section.

Smart move on his part. In the ACC he only has to complete against Va Tech, FSU and G’Tech. The rest are at or way below the level he has built UofL. In the SEC he would have UF,GA and USC all in the same division. Al is UT’s West divison rival. He was looking at going 6-2 in conference on a good year. Maybe lucking up and winning 7-8 conference wins every 5-7 years. UT would have fired him. Can you say Bobby Petrino. UK will have him to deal with every year. Thanks Barnhart.

Money, money, money! State-wide taxpayer funds spent well on this one, which is why we don’t need another corporate sponsor!

Best contract of the football season, which is not in the off season yet, for some…

Strong is a great recruiter, still not sold on his coaching ability. Kind of like Scott Drew at Baylor (yes I know he just beat us in basketball but we also shot as well as bad guys in a movie). Louisville seems to just make enough plays to win, while they should be winning by 30 in the BE with the talent they have. I guess the ACC will show us more.

Good for Coach Strong — also good for UK. They being in ACC – the rivalry is still there but there are less ‘conference’ implications for both schools.

Gotta give Charlie props. That’s an OG move, gettin that money. Why work your tail off rebuilding somewhere with legit expectations just to have to try to beat the best teams in the country when you can collect the same amount of money and kick back and relax against a much easier schedule while collecting criminals and guys who can’t get into other schools? He played UofL. Gangsta.

He couldnt win in the sec and he new it. He wants the card fans to be like BBN and i kind of like him for that. Took him 26 yeras to get a head job and i think Tenn might be better off with out him. Look what the cards did in the big east, struggled to win several games and lost to syr,and ucnn teams that are awful. I quess i dont think he’s all that good of a coach.

There is actually some smoke that Strong accepted the UT job, but that the Vols did not want him to bring Coach Hurtt, in fear that he is a major risk to NCAA rules compliance (he is). And Strong said no….so why? Because Strong is a cheater? Or because maybe Hurtt threatened to spill it how he really got Bridgewater to come to Louisville? Who knows? Maybe none of it is true, but it’s certainly a take that makes more sense than Strong preferring to hate UT’s money and facilities.

Charlie Strong is a good football coach and recruiter. It remains to be seen if he is very good to great. But I think he made the right move in this case. While the Tennessee job is certainly more prestigious than the Louisville job, it is not what it used to be and has been on the decline for almost a decade. He would have had is work cut out for him if he went there now. I still think UT should hire Petrino. A match made in heaven, er, hell.

It’s been a great even outstanding week for the Cards and Jurich: they got in a conference with some reasonable security, which I didn’t think they had a chance to do, and kept the coach they wanted, in the face of major competition. Since UofL came up with major bucks, it was a no brainer for Coach Strong. He stayed at a place where expectations, and the chance of a significant failure, are not nearly as great while receiving comparable money and gets the chance to build on what he, instead of someone else, has started. He used the leverage UT gave him extremely well.

That’s a picture of a guy that just committed career suicide. Yea, he just got more money, and is stuck at UL. The funny thing: Charlie lied about interviewing for the job, called UL fans out to be more like BNN, verbally excepts the UT job, shacks UL down for more money, and UL fans still trust this guy.

    22 & 27. You guys are right.

    39. You however are an idiot. If he doesn’t succeed at UT, which is going to be hard with who they have to play during rebuilding, where does he go from there? He won’t be a head coach even at UL. Unfortunately you can’t look outside of the fact that you are biased because you are an SEC fan. You can’t even see past the fact the 3 coaches have turned down the UT job.

I’m beginning to think this is actually a UL site with as much breaking news is reported on here about UL.

  49. UKBlue1!

#49 If stoops wins 4 games he will have done have fine coaching job, anymore it will be great. Our team is a full rebuild job because we have be Jokethorped!. UL lives are getting ready to change Va Tech, FSU, Miami, Ga Tech, BC and NC St. No more 5 non-confernce games and 7 games of sub-par teams. Your schedule is about to get toughter.

  50. Belly Read

Din’t Bridgewater go to UaVel because MIAMI was, without question, on par to receive sanctions from the NCAA?

Plus, Strong promised he would be the man – as a big fish – in a small pond.

Strong WHould have failed at UT in the SEC.

He’s 24 and 15 in a (insert laugh) glorified metro at a commuter college.

The BE is/was a joke in football.

UaVel has been smart enough (credit Hard Schnellenberger) to play a taditionally weak schedule and focus on the big game in an undeserved big bowl…because you win that and you can say crap like “we are a top 10 program”.

Case in point: Recall the 1991 Fiesta Bowlwin over Alabama?

  52. BleedRed
    3:49 pm December 6, 2012 Permalink

    50. Im pretty much on par with what you are saying, although I think we will do well in the ACC. At least then we know where we are progressing. You left Clemson out of there which will probably our biggest test other than FSU.

52 You are probably right about the UT job, which is goin to be true for almost anyone. It is going to take more than 3 years to rebuild in the SEC but 3 is all you will get, if that. And you can say we schedule weak games but we tried to achedule Georgia and they backed out. I know you wont admit it, but we are at a point where the bigger teams dont know about us so they dont want to take a chance at an L for an out of conference game.

  53. TN Tuxedo
    3:50 pm December 6, 2012 Permalink

Forgot to mention….while UT is a plum SEC job, for which Strong is NOT ready, by staying at UaVel he continues the EZ road (ACC 2013, but NOT SEC) until the ARK jobs becomes available in 2-3 years.

  54. Rae
    5:23 pm December 6, 2012 Permalink

    53. Anything above 4 million and he is being overpaid. That’s almost national championship money for a rising coach who hasn’t won an NC. 3.5 million a year is more sensible.

  55. BleedRed
    6:39 pm December 6, 2012 Permalink

    54. I wouldn’t really call the ACC the easy road, easier than the SEC, yes. And the point I have tried to make, in 2 years this team is seniors, we are in the ACC, and puts us in a much better spot at being able to go to the NC game if we can go undefeated. At that point Strong looks even more valueable. Right now UT is a death trap, 3 years and you are not head coaching, you are either done or back to coordinator or something.

    55. I have assumed he is going to be close to 4 million. Whether he is “worth” it, I dont really now from the outside, but look at it like this, after BCG wouldn’t you be willing to pay Cal more than what he is worth? I know he has a NC but to go from where we ended up in 2007 to now, we don’t want him going anywhere. Whether you want to believe it or not, he is a big reason we got into the ACC.

Actually, if you heard the press conference it was a family decision. His wife and kids love Louisville. Charlie truly loves Louisville. How many football coaches do you know who attends volleyball, men/women’s basketball, baseball, swimming and softball at the university they work for? He also is a very loyal guy and I don’t bellieve money was the #1 thing. He wanted to build a program and he’s not like the other coaches who just go to school to school. What’s wrong with staying at UofL where you have the one of the Best AD’s in the country. Majority of U of L facilities are funded by corporations or private funding (with some state money) unlike the crappy all state funded UK facilities. Also, When does UK care about football and what’s with this military theme? a “Stoops Troops?” reminds me of the “Joker’s Army”.
