Charlie Strong wants Cards fans to have same passion as “Big Blue Nation”

In his press conference this morning, Charlie Strong dodged rumors that he was interviewing for other coaching jobs, namely in the SEC. But, he also criticized Cards fans on their poor attendance this season, especially for Louisville’s senior day against UConn: “We’re 9-0 and we don’t even pack the stadium? What more do we need to do?”

In fact, he went as far to challenge them to have the same passion as the “Big Blue Nation” does for their teams:

“Kentucky can travel with the Big Blue Nation, they go take over. We should have that same passion here.”

This is the perfect example of their fans, or lack there of….and why I believe he takes the SEC job that gets offered to him. Maybe he already has.

UL is commuter U, always has been, always will be the stepping stone to something else.

Strong knows if UK goes 6-6 there will still be 70k in the stands, UL can’t fill 55k while being in the top 10 and undefeated. Pretty sure that says it all!

Another great coach that will be short lived at UL…

I can’t imagine him not going somewhere this season.

Charlie obviously did not see the picture of the crowd at the Vandy game. 🙂

That being said, UK football fans have been for the most part a loyal and long-suffering bunch. Charlie is probably basing part of what he said on seeing UK crowds in the past when he was part of the Gators staff.

How many Card fans are making the trip to NOLA to give Charlie a fond farewell?

When your coach beats up on the fans that says a lot about the program.
Although, it would be difficult to watch Big East football.
In the SEC, even in KY’s case this year, there was at least one good team on the field.

Pretty sure it has more to do with the level of competition being played. They can pack the stand when they want. 9-0 in The Big Least against 2nd tier competition says it all. I believe that UL going to the ACC probably keeps Strong in Louisville.

UL and rest of old Big East back where they started…of course they can always add Temple, Davidson, College of Charleston and Valdosta State.

#18 Those are some pretty big ifs. Let’s say that UK gets upgrades. First off, I’m not sure they are even adding more seats at CWS. What I read is updated recruiting room, pressbox, etc. So if CWS stays at 70,000 capacity, that still keeps it middle of pack or lower in SEC. I hope Stoops wins in SEC, but if he does, it will come at the expense of Vandy/Ole Miss/MSU/Mizzou. It will be dam hard to do better than .500. I don’t care if Stoops is the next Lombardi, will he surpass Saban/Spurrier/Miles/Muschamp? Even if he could, will UK’s facilities, $$ from boosters, recruiting base surpass other SEC school? I think Stoops is a major upgrade, but that’s like saying a 1988 rusty Ford Fairlane is an upgrade over a 1978 Pinto. Still plenty of places to go up in the SEC and outside of it. You just can’t imagine UK as a steppingstone because no UK coach has ever been successful enough to use us as such.

I’d say UofL is a good job from an AD, fundraising, and facilities standpoint, but it’s obvious they don’t have as large of a fanbase. Charlie is using this as his excuse to either fire their fan base up for the bowl game where he knows Florida is going to flood with people, or make and excuse to leave the job for a bigger post.

#28….THANK YOU. That’s the exact point. Guy Morris wasn’t using us as a stepping stone, hell he wasn’t Mitch’s guy. I personally think if a guy is hired in by the AD(ala Stoops) then moves on to something bigger and better…would have to be either existing top tier SEC FL, AL, UGA, LSU or Notre Dame/USC then you can say UK was his stepping stone. But I just don’t see this guy that way.

Maybe he proves me wrong and bolts for the bigger jobs when they come calling, and by hell i hope they do. Means he’s been super successful and beating some top tier SEC schools consistantly. I think he’s got to win consistently before ANYONE will be calling wanting him to come to their school.

And how many of the TOP SEC schools do you think will swallow their pride and request to speak with a UK football coach???? Seriously think about that, we are the BASKETBALL school, if we’re winning in football…there will be a cosmic shift in the SEC. I just don’t see ANYONE asking another SEC head coach to take their team over.

28…Any realistic UK fan doesn’t and shouldn’t expect Kentucky to surpass the likes of Alabama, LSU, or Florida. I don’t think anybody really and truly thinks that will ever be the case, at least on a consistent basis. Is it possible for Stoops to come in, build the program to the point where we could perennially compete with those schools? Absolutely. Is it too far-fetched to think we could catch lightning in a bottle once or twice and win the SEC East? I don’t think so.

That being said, do I expect Kentucky to be a program on par with perennial top 10 powers? No, and I don’ think any straight-thinking Kentucky fan should expect that. However, what I do expect, and what I think is totally logical, is for Kentucky to be a WINNING program. A program that makes second and third tier bowl games year in and year out. A program that consistently finishes in the middle of the pack of the SEC, on par with the likes of South Carolina, Ole Miss, Arkansas (most years), Mississippi State and now Missouri. A program that, every once in a while, makes a run at a divisional title and a major bowl, whether it’s a BCS, or Capitol One type bowl. The tools are here to do that, and it is definitely not too far-fetched to think a guy with the passion and direction of Mark Stoops couldn’t get us to that point.

And if ends up leaving for a better job, I’ll be ok with it. Because that will mean he has built us up and then finding the next Johnny-Come-Lately will be that much easier, and we won’t have to always have a coach come in to build us back up.

  37. Bigger Jobs
    1:44 pm December 3, 2012 Permalink

Be realistic here, how many jobs are out there that are bigger than an SEC job?
Once the super conferences are set in next year or two, coaches are not going to be jumping to jobs that are not in super conferences.
Sure, Mich., Ohio St, N Dame, USC and a few others are big jobs but how many places can a coach go and still be in high profile league?
Then the next big question is, how often do those big time jobs (top tier SEC and ones mentioned above) come open?
UK has the ability to pay as much or more as nearly any other school, therefore if successful why would a coach move to Arkansas, Miss ST, Mizou, A&M, etc?
It would take an opening at a Georgia, Fla, LSU, Alabama, Ohio St, N Dame, Mich, USC type school to be an upgarde at that point.

The landscape of college football is no longer the same.
Jobs in the big 4 conferences are going to be even more coveted than in the past.

You do realize Texas A&M is sitting in one of the largest recruiting hot beds in the country right? So much to the point that they could probably recruit solely within 2 hours of campus and have a better class than the rest of the SEC–especially Kentucky. Not all, but a significant portion of the UK football crowd needs to brush up on basic college football knowledge. Anyone not from UK would sprint from Lexington if offered the job at A&M. UL fans being as passionate s the Big Blue Nation. First you must have fans & be relevant outside the cit limits of Louisville. Third: It’s kind of hard to have fans with passion when your fans are nothing but bandwagon fans.

    2:46 pm December 3, 2012 Permalink

42, If A&M can recruit within 2 hours of campus and have a better class than rest of SEC then why aren’t they doing it each year?
I believe that history proves that best classes have consistently come from top tier SEC teams, before A&M joined the league.
Not saying that UK has better recruiting base than A&M but my point was than if successful at UK one would assume that Stoops will have established his own recruiting pipeline whether in FLA, Ohio or otherwise. Having said that, at that point I do not believe that most of the SEC jobs would be any better than the UK job, excluding the top tier jobs. You may consider A&M a top tier SEC job but I do not sir.

As for brushing up on basic football knowledge, I am not a guru, however I believe you could possibly do a little brushing up on your own if you believe that A&M can out recruit the rest of the SEC.

Other than the UK games how many times have they filled “The John”? They also had a poor showing for their Orange Bowl appearance. That was the lowest rated Orange Bowl in history and probably one of the most boring. Even with the poor attendance this year at Commonwealth I don’t think UK fans should be criticized. Look at the number of fans they took to Tampa for the OutBack Bowl and to the Music City Bowls.Give us a winning team and watch what happens to Commonwealth Stadium. The poor attendance this year was just sending a message to get a new coach. 72 no worries, since you start immediately at Florida you will get to beat an irrelevant school real soon…like on Jan 2, so just sit tight.

    75. Toilet bowl maybe, but you will never get to a big bowl, and you will never be mid level in the SEC.

#71: Everyone knows Louisville isn’t a college football town, never was and never will be. Most of UL’s fans are fair weather fans. All they care about regarding home football games is tailgating which they think they invented and drinking during the games. They could have played their home games at Manual Stadium if they had UK’s record this year. Also I believe there were more UK fans at their opening game than all of the Big Least opponents combined.

Be sure to check out Bourbon St while in NOLA.
You didn’t get to stay long enough to do so back in April.

What is the line on that game anyway….guessing Florida by 25.

    78. Wait so UK fans packed the stadium this year? And there wasn’t a full week or two of bad talk about Capiluto on here this season when the tailgating was banned at UK?

    79. Yes we got beat by a great team at UK last year, people expected us to lose in the first round, we got all the way to the final four.

    92 – 2009 average UL attendance was 32k in a 34k stadium.
UK’s average attendance this year was roughly 32k in a 68k stadium. But we are guessing since they stopped taking attendance this year…

95 stadium size doesn’t matter. If you can’t fill up 34, you can’t fill up 68. You think if you’re pizza box held 68 you would have had more people there? Clearly tix were available so that makes -0- sense.

Plus 95, well all know no one at Louisville can really keep tracknof numbers so I’m sure 32k is a great exaggeration.

UK has one of the dumbest football fan bases in the SEC–and I’m not a Card fan. If they actually were competitive, we’d be able to move them into the delusional category with Arkansas.

96 – You have a football ring to kiss?
97 – A) Attendance for UL in 2009 was the same as UK in 2012. But UL is fairweather and UK isn’t? Really? B) Stadium size does matter. More seats means more cheap seats means more attendance. Before the stadium expansion there weren’t any cheap seats at all.
98 – UK literally lied about their attendance this year.

103 your team turned to Groupon to sell tickets, please shut up. Or keep going so we can keep laughing at you. But you are right, you may have sold a few more seats if cheaper tickets were available…too bad you can’t trade food stamps for them. And there is no proof that Louisville wasn’t lying about their attendance records. No one cared enough to check.
