Chad Ford thinks Willie will stay

Cauley-Stein_Willie_TV Head 12-13

Ben Roberts from The Herald-Leader’s Next Cats blog spoke to ESPN draft guru Chad Ford this morning about the possibilities of Kentucky’s freshmen leaving for the league.  Ford told Roberts he thinks Willie Cauley-Stein will stay for his sophomore season but he’s unsure about Alex Poythress and Archie Goodwin. If those two decide to leave to avoid the incoming competition, he thinks they’ll spend at least one year in the D-League, maybe even two.

Ford also believes Nerlens Noel will leave and could still end up being the top pick, even after the injury. He told Next Cats that many scouts project Noel at No. 1 overall.

Go Cats.

If he wants a ring, then stay. If he wants the money, then leave. Very simple.

I believe that the future is very bright for Poythress & Goodwin. But the idea that they could get drafted this year absolutely stuns me. I could not imagine a GM drafting either one. Please explain and I do not want to hear about potential as I believe they both have a lot to prove in that department.

We should want them to all stay. Bashing kids like Goodwin and Poythress just because they don’t make enough shots to suit some 400 pound moron screaming at his TV is inexcusable.

Unless all the players except Noel want to automatically go to the D League, they go no where.

Why does it have to be two years of college? So next year’s class is loaded, and maybe they compete for playing time, and don’t get it…come back for your Junior year then! If that doesn’t work…there is a Senior year waiting too.

Nerlens really doesnt have a choice top 5 pick he would be crazy to comeback.
I think WCS and Poythress are going to. By WCS comments after the season he said he would have to talk to his family. Meaning if he is projected high enough hes gone!
If Alex is projected as a lottery pick he better take it. From watching him play his Motor will be a question 5 years from now. i dont see how he can improve his stock with the incoming class because Randle will dominate his minutes next year. If he chooses to comeback it will be for 2 more years not 1.
Goodwoin was guilty of trying to hard this year which led to bone headed plays. If he gets a better jump shot and you would think he will with anther year under Cal plus with the talent comeing in Goodwin wont have all the presure to score like he had this passed year. He could end up being a high draft pick. you can question Archies choices with the ball but not his heart and that should help him get better.

Goodwin and Poythress both have the talent to be big, but only a GM who has lost his mind would expect to draft either of them and have them develop, largely on their own in the D-League, into something worth a pick. But at UK under a proper system of development, they could both flourish!a

instead of fooling with college for a year or 2, why don’t these 5star players out of high school sign contracts with teams overseas, and then put their name in the nba draft? just a thought

At least one of them is going to have to leave to make room for Wiggins, unless we want to advise Hood or Wiltjer to transfer, or for Hood to walk-on during his final year of eligibility. If I had to choose one to leave out of the Goodwin/WCS/Poythress group, its Poythress every time.

I like this article being right next to the one about what is wrong with college basketball. NO. It should be what is wrong with the NBA if anyone other than Noel at this point is a first round draft pick.

Willie Cauley-Stein will FLOURISH next season as the team’s starting big man. He excels in an up-and-down running game and abuses other centers with his speed, agility and leaping ability. Next year’s team be running all the time with the Harrisons, Young & Randle.

Expect WCS to get a ton of easy buckets, a lot of which will come from the Auto-Lob. You know for a fact that’s coming back in full force w/ this new team. I expect big things from Willie.

He’s going to improve his game so much just by being surrounded by so many talented players. Plus they’ll have a style of play and tempo that caters to his best abilities. I can’t wait to see his development and improvement!

I think teams these days draft in the lottery mainly based on fear of losing the next star. Noel, and to a lesser degree WCS, can make you worry about missing a star. I love all our players, but Goodwin and Poythress, to me, look like they have a long long way to go to even be significant contributors on an NBA team. They are like 5 years away from averaging 10 minutes a game in the NBA. Better to play against other 20 year olds and learn that go to the D league and get the hell beaten out of you by 30 year olds fighting to feed their families in empty gyms. Just my take.

Right on 17. Why wouldn’t you be upset with a player who was completely out of control and never passed the ball and another who barely showed up? If you’re thankful for that kind of play you must be a cards fan. We expect more. Hopefully Alex and Archie figure it out in the next 200 odd days. If not I’m gonna be pretty disappointed. Again.

Chad Ford’s opinion and five bucks will get you a lukewarm latte at your nearest Starbucks.
    If money talks, Willie walks.
I would LOVE to see him in blue and white next year, not in the D league.
Let’s hope the new home for Mom can wait.
An offseason, summer coaching with our staff, then fall practice and WCS would be a shining star on a team of stars.
Stay, Willie, let’s get schiet right next season!

Don’t ever use the word “we” again and act like you speak for everyone. You’re the exact type clueless fan people clown UK about. Get lost.

Archie could thrive off the bench and competing in practice, and if Alex ever really gets into it, he could be huge. But how much I think we need them depends on whether Wiggins commits. If he doesn’t, we could especially use Archie at the 3 and emergency PG. Willie coming back would be huge to patrol the paint, work on his offense, and push the two new guys to compete and be ready for the SEC. (Also we’ll need the depth against teams like MSU which are always challenging.)

    4) Archie is a classic slasher and can defend. Poythress can be a big body at the 3 and his 3 shooting has been great. NBA drafts on potential and regularly sits on Europeans guys, so they like to have players in the D-league they can use in practice or as trade-bait.

I think we are going to see a return to the NBA drafting a lot of European players in the first round. It actually was working pretty well for a while. These guys that jump too early from college will fall to the 2nd round, where there are no guarantees. Then, they might think twice before leaving after 1 year. What a joke for most of them. Especially players like Goodwin and Poythress. Are you f’in kidding me. The weak-ass SEC ain’t the NBA.

Can you imagine Goodwin, Poythress and WCS in a practice against NBA players? They would be smoked. There is no way that any of these are ready to play against men.

Poythress will leave because he is scared of the incoming . . . and good, he’s a head case. Archie, I think is starting to “Get It”. He’ll be a good back up. And WCS should stay. He will get treated better at UK than the D-league.

I hope Willie realizes that with no offensive game other than lobs, which won’t come as easy in the NBA, and unable to hit free throws, that he’s destined for a long time in the D league, or overseas. If he intends on staying I would like to see him lay his phone down, go to the gym and learn to shoot free thows, and work on developing his offensive game. Willie is a long way from being ready for the NBA. With the attitudes we had on the team this year, I personally hope they all go. We don’t need a cancer(s) even close to the incoming team. I would like to see Kyle go to a school that could showcase him more to enable him to get ONE good paycheck before he spends his professional career in the D league, or overseas.

#4- Whether you want to hear about potential or not that is the fundamental reason Poythress and Goodwin could both go in the first round of the NBA draft. GM’s of NBA teams have to fill out their rosters in both the NBA and the D-League. With the loss of players every year they have to find players to take their place. Just because the talent level this year is not as good as most does not mean the GM’s have the luxury of not drafting players. They have to have the warm bodies so players will be drafted and if there are not enough proven players then those with potential will be picked. Therefore Poythress and Goodwin will both go in the first round if they want.

if willie comes back, look out! he improved by leaps and bounds and seems to be on the cusp of being one of those great big men to wear kentucky across their chest. i would say maybe sam bowie with knees. if archie and alex were to come back with the right approach and no one suffered a serious injury we would be looking at 40 and 0. what’s up knight?
