Chad Ford: Davis could be much better than Camby

Today during his weekly online chat, ESPN NBA guru Chad Ford heaped more praise on Anthony Davis after his near triple double last night. The praise is great and all, but more interesting is Ford’s prediction that Davis could end up being “much better” than Marcus Camby, with whom Coach Calipari also compared the talented freshman in his postgame remarks:

Todd (Tn): Last night Anthony Davis most complete performance by any of the top prospects?
Chad Ford: 27 points, 15 rebounds, 7 blocks, 10-for-12 from the field is about as close as you get. I know some fans are concerned about his lack of strength and raw offensive abilities. But on the defensive end, he’ll be a monster at the next level. And … I think this is very important … he’s a good kid, a hard worker and plays with a great motor all the time. Very few big men have all of that. I think Marcus Camby is his floor. He could be much better than Camby because I think he can be a 4 at the next level.

Todd (Tn): The question of always production vs. potential is talked about every year but doesn’t Anthony Davis give you production+potential?
Chad Ford: Exactly. He currently leads all NCAA players in PER. It’s always great when the stats are confirming the scouting reports and in this case there’s a very strong correlation. Davis not only has all of the tools on paper of a No. 1 pick. He’s playing like one right now.

Ford’s chat also includes his thoughts on Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, whom he could see returning for his sophomore season (insert giddy school girl clapping here).

What do you make of Ford’s remarks? If Marcus Camby is Davis’ “floor,” will any of us even be able to see his ceiling?

I would love it if MKG stayed another year, I think he’s a perfectionist and could easily stay under Cal another year to improve. Whether that’ll happen or not….who knows. It sure is a nice thought though.

In other news… Davis had an unbelievable game last night!

the only reason MKG stays is if he is dead set on being the no. 1 overall taken in the draft … which ADavis has a vapor lock on right now

Let’s hope Davis doesn’t develop an abnormal fondness for gold chains and cash while he’s still playing at Kentucky….I’m just sayin’….and Davis and MKG need two years of college bonding experience before taking on the grind of the NBA..again..I’m just sayin’. ๐Ÿ™‚

I would love to see it, but who in there right mind would think MKG could return for another year?

Camby averaged 10 pts and 10 rebs per game in the NBA for his career. I think Davis will absolutely exceed those numbers…particularly points. Davis is smooth.

What if Davis goes #1 in the Draft and Gilchist goes 2nd. Then 10 years fom now, Gilchrist becomes the next Jordan.

Then all the analysts call Davis the Sam Bowie of his generation.

Seriously though, Sam Bowie was top shelf coming out of college in a similar way to a Davis (hence the top NBA pick).

That’s great and all but he’s a typical Caliari one and done. Can’t win the big one with all these new players every year. We need a coach who can recruit more 3 star players who care about the program. Like…well…those teams we keep beating…oh look a Golden Corral…buffet time!

What if they freaked the entire basketball world out… and MKG, Davis, Teague, Lamb and Jones ALL returned…to go along with the Wiltjer, Harrow —- and Bazz, Arch, Alex and Willey.

    11 deep and ’96 revisited.
Talking about NBA expansion team…they could compete with the standard.

    12. Why does every thing Davis do positive have to be put down or compared to what MKG does? Why hate on Davis just becasue you like MKG?

Harrison Barnes had a lock on a top 3 pick last year and came back (even after a less than steller year). Who would have thought that he would have returned. Maybe MKG will be back.

17 – We can always dream of a mass comeback a la 2007 Gators. My head nearly explodes just thinking about it though, so I’ll put the thought to rest for now.

i gotta say this : watching the pregame in-the-lockerroom shots with the players at their stalls … MKG was listening to tunes and staring intently at a picture of what i assume is his family … he is on a mission , i’d love to see him back, but he is a top 5 pick and he will not be back I STILL WISH HIM ALL THE BEST AND THANK HIM FOR HIS HARD WORK !

So Chad Fordโ€™s inability to assess player talent is a no-no here as well?
