Cats Thunder over Herd, 82-54

It was an ugly first half that saw shot after shot the Cats threw up rim out, and two nut-shots to Marshall’s Elijah Pittman that set him back gasping for air. Kentucky held a 33-24 lead going into the locker room, which was all but erased coming back out.

The second half began just as ugly as the first; as the Thundering Herd scored the first five points, prompting Coach Calipari to call a timeout to regroup. Sluggish second-half starts are a trend this Kentucky team sorely needs to bust. But athleticism finally took over and Kentucky rolled to a relatively easy 82-54 victory.

— In the first half, it was all about Nerlens Noel. He had eight points and eight boards in the first 20 minutes while giving enormous effort that had the Rupp Arena crowd on their feet on multiple occasions. Some of the others on the court may not have been giving it their all, but no question Noel was. He finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Ryan Harrow continued to build on his climb of confidence. Aggressiveness and decisiveness were two keys to his 23-point day, which led the team. This was the third straight game he has set his season-high in points scored. And he has set the bar high for himself after tonight.

Mrs. Tyler will be by shortly with a full-game recap. Stay tuned.

Meh, we won. Not by enough, considering it was at Rupp and playing a bottom of the barrel team. At least Tyler Thompson is coming by for a recap.

If this team wants to be honest about who needs to play for them to do well in March, then they need to realize that Mays should come off the bench. He’s the slowest guard we have, and he hasn’t shot well since the exhibition games. He’s had a good game here and there, and no really awful game, but his upside is limited. The back court should be Harrow and Goodwin.

    Cal is a jerk.
Camp Cal – if it’s as strenuous as advertised, requires players on the team to arrive early, practice hard and stay late. If I’m not mistaken – that’s every player on the team.

Yet on game day – with a 30 point cushion and the game out of reach for the last 7-8 minutes – Cal keeps his starters in. With three minutes left – the Cats up 30 – Cal refuses to let the subs play.

That’s a classless move on the part of an adult who should be rewarding young people who devote as much time to the team as anyone else.

    Players first? Yeah – right!

It’s just more playing time for the players that matter to the W/L record of this team. They need as much practice as possible and experience as freshman in order to win championships

    3) Mays is a transfer from Wright State or somewhere. He is not going to be elite. Anything we get from him is icing on the cake. Coach didn’t plan for this season well. Anybody could beat us.

Oldschool, you’re the jerk. You obviously have no clue what you’re talking about. This was the last game before Louisville, and then conference play starts. Chances are, there won’t be many more games that the starters will be able to sit the last few minutes. With that in mind, it’s smart to get them used to playing til the end. Of course, I wouldn’t expect your feeble mind to grasp that concept.

I can’t stand you Kentucky redneck morons who cry about this and that. I am not a Kentucky fan but you guys are so lucky to have a coach like him. He just won the national championship and you losers complain about everything. I can’t wait till coach calipari leaves and your team sucks again. Wish BCG was still your coach.

Old school… Do us all a favor. Either keep your negative senseless comments off here or kill yourself. No just kill yourself. There’s a reason why cal doesn’t go deep into his bench when the game is well in hand… It’s because those bench players don’t matter in games. Your team isn’t gonna get better by playing bad players. If those players don’t like it then I’m sure they’ can transfer. But something tells me they dont mind watching a national championship from the bench and getting a super expensive ring. Oh… Did I tell you to kill yourself yet

For the two post above that criticize mays, y’all are stupid. Mays is the glue to this years team. He plays smart, will hit shots and plays fairly good defense. And it’s not like we aren’t starting Goodwin. So at the very least this is great advertisement to future recruits to show cal will and can play 3 guards at the same time.

12 – Why does Cal have ‘bad’ players on the team?
99 percent of coaches will tell you that they will not invest their resources or time on a player unless he is capable of helping the team in some aspect.

If Long, Malone, Beckham and Lanter are a danger to just trip over themselves in a mop-up role – why have them on a team?

Only two theories – One – They are there to boost team’s GPA
or Two – Cal cannot find talented roll players who know they’ll never get a fair shot unles their NBA material

Could be a combination of the two.

Regardlss – the kids on the end of th bench sweat just as much in practice as the starters, and are deserving of at least a few minutes on the floor at Rupp.

Great game by harrow. But it was against their third string pg. Next week will be a good test. My biggest concern about the tard game is our guards are not good defenders. Mays runs like he has a piano on his back. Hope he does not guard russ smith.

    24) We get burned by 3’s every season. How do you defend them? Straight up man to man and you don’t let them have an inch of breathing room. Ultimately it’s up to the players to do the deed but if the coach doesn’t take it seriously….he refused to acknowledge free throws important until after the Kansas loss in the finals.

OBVee. You have to realize that teams play out of their minds when they play against his teams. Many of the three pointers made are contested. I have been to Coach Cals practices when he was with umass the Nets Memphis U and Kentucky and I know for a fact he put an emphasis on free throw shooting and defending the pick and roll with emphasis on the shooter which can be a three point shot. What he says in interviews and what he actually works on in practice are different. His practices are very detailed and meticulous.

31- OBvee, you criticize Cal for something that you have no idea about. Your idea to stop 3-pt shooting is to play man to man and not give them an inch of breathing room. WOW! Really profound. As if all this time, Cal was telling them to back of their man and let him have plenty of room to shoot. To play good 3 pt defense, a team has to be able to switch and communicate well. They have to be able to find shooters when the defense breaks down or when in transition. This is tough for a young team who have never played together, and probably never concentrated this much on defense before. Also, by not giving your man an inch of room on the perimeter you make it much more likely that he will go by you. When that happens, either help comes or he has a wide open layup. When help comes is usually when shooters are left open on the perimeter. Maybe you should learn something about the game before you criticize one of the best coaches of his generation.
