Cats smacked around in Oxford, lose to Ole Miss 71-69

Someone forgot to tell Kentucky that this was supposed to be their easy tune-up game.  After a painful lack of awareness resulted in a UK shot clock violation with 14 seconds left and the Cats clinging to a one-point lead, Ole Miss’ Chris Warren came out of a timeout and knocked down a deep three with 2.9 seconds to go, which ultimately would prove to be the game-winner.  For the Cats, falling to the Rebels, who were winless in the conference at home and 1-5 overall, Tuesday’s performance easily rates as the worst outing of the season.  And it came in front of a crowd that looked to be at half capacity even with a t-shirt and gas card promotiong.

With questions already prevalent regarding their ability to win on the road, the Cats again failed to step up to the plate and, in doing so, failed to do the two things that Coach Cal said he expected this season.  They did not get a full 40 minutes from anyone and the veteran players let him down badly.  It’s going to be an interesting couple of days leading up to the Gators in Gainesville.

We’ll have more in a few…

ON THE BRIGHT SIDE:  Jeff Goodman is reporting that his sources say U of L will not recruit Ricardo “Ricky” Ledo now that he has decommitted from Providence.  That leaves the Cats sittin awfully pretty with him.  Cheer you up just a teeny tiny bit?

Cal not calling a timeout to set up a play with 50 seconds and a 1 point lead is the SMH moment of the year. You won’t find a coach in the country besides Cal who does not call a timeout in that situation and he had 2 left. Then he apparently does not make it clear that the one guy you can’t let take a shot is Warren and guess who makes a miracle 3? Yea I blame coaching in the last 50 seconds for that loss.

We’re softer than charmin. 4-3 in a watered down SEC, and we still have yet to play Vandy, Tennessee, and Florida. It’s about to get ugly, folks. We’ll lose at least four more in the SEC (including tourney) and crash out of the Big Dance. Which means 10+ losses are coming. Get ready for a meltdown.

We should have called a timeout up by 1, and 2 timesouts remaining. If we call a timeout, set up a play, and still lose it happens… but leaving one timeout on the table is solely on Cal. This is the first game in his tenure at UK that I blame on him.

I have to stop watching this team. They’re killing me. UK won’t be legit until we have a roster of only Cal’s players. With Liggins and Harrelson in the line up, it’s 3 on 5 on the offensive end. We need to have 5 scoring threats on the floor. The freshmen have to do all the scoring, the majority of the rebounding, and play tough D every minute of every game or we lose. If they have an off night in any one of those categories, we lose. Harrelson, Miller, Liggins can get us maybe 10 points and 14 rebounds a game combined. WAY too little production from that group.

Uk ball with 50.6 seconds on the clock. Dead ball. Plenty of time to realize the situation call a timeout and get a good set in. Instead. You do nothing. 35 seconds ticks of shot clock and no shot is fired. Ball never goes inside 3 point line. I don’t give a shit what anyone says that loss is 100% on Calipari and there is no excuse for that sort of negligence. I don’t care that they lost. But I will not stand for that sort of ignorane and lack of basketball IQ. 3 freshman on floor I never finish a half with a timeout in my pocket. Garunteed! I’m over it. Miller passing up that shot should earn him a seat on the bench indefinitely. Give me Poole or Hood…I’m sure one of them would’ve at least given us a CHANCE to win by stepping up and taking the shot. No excuse for that BS. Maybe a drastic comment, but at this point in the season, if Miller doesn’t understand that that’s his shot and this is his team to lead, he can’t be on the floor. One of the most frustrating plays I can ever remember.

At the very least, even a missed 3 by Miller would give us a shot at a long rebound… Even after all that, I thought for sure that Chris Warren would draw a double team. Instead Jones switches and gives Warren a full 5 feet to get off the shot. Jones closed quick, but it was still way too late.

Think about this… In our last two losses we had the ball inside of a minute 3 times. We were down 1 on two possessions against Bama and couldn’t get off a shot and up one tonight. I don’t mind losing, but to not even get up a shot??? REdiculous! Oh, and Cal did call timeout in Bama. The problem is definitely not Coach Cal… The problem is that we don’t have one clutch performer on our entire team! I love our talent, but we fold up like a cheap suit when winning time presents itself.

Although I am NOT a superior college athlete playing for the Kentucky Wildcats, I know the decision you made tonight was the wrong one. Hopefully, you do too.

This loss is inexcusable. Our fifth loss and the third to a horrible team. UNC, Bama and Ole Miss are horrible teams. The SEC West, the division this website has repeatedly made fun of, has owned us so far. We can’t win on the road, we don’t play aggressive, we get lax on defense and at times we play like we are stoned. We better get our heads out of our asses or it is going to be a long year till the tourney starts, then it is going to get real short real quick.

Starting to realize that this I was spoiled last year. Last year we had a proven all star leader in Patterson to take the leadership role. This year, we have the talented freshmen but no upperclassmen worth hanging around. Maybe Darius is a good Kentucky kid, but he can’t make that kind of mistake. Yet the whole game was full of mistakes. What was with the stepping on the court when throwing the ball in bounds? And I love Jones, but at the beginning how many times did he get rejected? And how many times did we throw the ball to …well, no one? Horrible game, but we knew this was not an elite team coming in this year.

Lets face it Darius just plays scared and stupid at the end of games. He had two horrible TOs in at the end of the GA game on Saturday in which they stripped of the ball at the 3 point line and not calling a TO on the inbound play. Passing up that 3 was probably the worst single individual play I have seen by a UK player because he was just too scared to shoot.

The bottom line on this team is that they are not getting any better, they do not come ready to play for road games, they don’t step up and make plays at the end of games to win them. Really just a pathetic showing tonight by the entire team.

In 2008-2009 season, Kentucky basketball was 5-1 at this point in the SEC under Billy Gillespie and ended up in the NIT. They also had a loss to North Carolina, Georgia, and Ole Miss on the road. Liggins, Harrelson, and Darius Miller were all getting a significant amount of time on the floor. The team also had the talent of Patrick Patterson and Jodie Meeks. I do not think that Billy G is the better coach, however I do think it is important to point out. UK fans have no problem during the football season in saying that “UK had more talent than X opponent and loss. Continually losing these games should fall directly on the shoulders of the coaching staff and play calling.” What gives?

61….first of no one ever said anything about BG or Tubby so if you’re going to argue a post conscider reading it first. There is nothing you can say whatsoever that will convince me or anyone else who has any sort of basketball IQ that not calling a TO in that situation is a good move. you’re just gonna wing it and see what happens ehh?!? What more do I want? How about someone who understands special situations. I am honestly not a Calipari hater as you probably think that I am. I love the guy. I love his energy. I love his recruiting. I am simply stating an obvious fact that most fans and especially the media continue to ignore and that is that CAL IS NOT A GOOD GAME COACH…it’s obvious. He never wins a game that’s close unless a player goes off on his own and makes a spectacular play. So what do I want? I want people to start recognizing this. I want Cal to improve as a coach. I expect him just as he expects his players every year to improve. And just like our taem this year, we will not stand a chance to win a championship until that improvement takes place. What scares me is that no one is yelling at Cal telling HIM he needs to improve. So he doesn’t

Dudes, the kid made a very tough shot… If he misses the shot then we are talking about how this group battled back and won… It was not automatic that it was goign to go in. Give Warren some credit. Cal did not make one of our many ridiculous turnovers. The game is not on Cal or any one player. There is plenty of blame to go around, and you have to give Ole Miss credit for playing out of their behinds.

The stars just haven’t aligned as planned so far this year.

Are you kidding me?? Some recruit who MIGHT play here in 20-whatever going to cheer us up??? ABSOLUTELY NOT! We had the best recruits on the floor tonight too, and we lost to a bunch of high schoolers from Mississippi. When championships are given out for best recruiting classes, then I guess your earlier post about whether or not we should renovate Rupp or build a new gym is answered right there: we must build a new gym because the rafters at Rupp won’t be able to support these recruiting championships. But that’s not the way it works. We sent a group of BOYS to Oxford, Mississippi tonight in front of a half-filled gym (at least a third of which looked to be UK fans), and they still couldn’t pull it out. Let’s get real; Cal brought us back to relevance, no question about it. It felt great last year. But I believe we are starting to see exactly what that means, relevance DOES NOT equal dominance, especially in terms of UK standards (and we all know what that means). Because dominant teams don’t lose games like they did tonight. We haven’t been to a Final Four since 1998. I was in fourth grade. I am 23 now and just graduated college. That is a LONG time…more than anyone has had to wait since 1978!!!! Are you going to tell me with a straight face that Cal is going to lead a bunch of BOYS to the promised-land any time soon before they jump to the NBA?? Last year, I would’ve said “Yes. For sure.” But now I’m beginning to believe the 2009-2010 team were our “Dream Cats,” and most of our squads will resemble this year’s team for the upcoming years. Don’t book your Final Four tickets too early, no matter how good our players were in high school. It’s not gonna happen any time soon. Relevant? Yes, every year. Dominant? Never, only in dream seasons (and we still didn’t make it to the Final Four).

I do not believe that Coach Cal is unable to improve his coaching. Just like players coaches can improve. Sometimes it just takes the right person to point out to someone that an improvement needs to be made. I mean I could tell Jones that he needs to improve his freethrow shooting technique, but he probably is not going to give a shit what i say and let it go in one ear and out the other. So would i expect coach cal to listen to fans bitching about him needing to improve as a game coach…absolutely not. Jost like Jones he would think to himself, well im better than them so they don’t know what they’re talking about. So I’m not wanting Cal to get eaxed or something ridiculous like that. I want somebody…somebody who Cal respects and will listen to, to tell Cal that he needs to step his shit up. Learn from the greats. Sure you’re talented at recruiting, sure you dress well, sure you talk slick…But God damnit Cal you should be the greatest coach in the country with all that talent. And i’m not backing down from that statement. You need to learn from those who have gone before you, improve and then you will dominate. Otherwise you’ll always be a “should have been” and a “almost was”….

Real tough loss after a gutty comeback again for the second time in two weeks. Our team is a tough team that certainly isn’t perfect. We will be okay. Realize that we won a lot of games last year by one, two, and three points. We are competing every game and will be okay come tourney. We will need to get lucky then, but we will be a good enough team to make some noise. Maybe the ball will bounce our way a little more the rest of the way as opposed to what has been occuring. Go Cats! I’m happy with where we’re at.

I’m glad we played UofL when they were completly depleted. They lost the only guy that could guard Jones 24 hours before the game. Their center got hurt in warmups and their only returning starter and best revounder is out for the year. If we had those injuries, we’d have about 9 wins right now.

at number 11. you cant blame coach cal. blame the players lack of intensity the whole game that brought them to this position. cal didnt call a time out because we had momentum and it carried us to a wide open look for darius miller in the corner. it was the upperclassmens fault we lost this game. not depth not foul trouble not coach, but lack of leadership from upperclassmen. good thing these losses are coming now.

We arent a bad team we played the first half like we were thinking about FLA on saturday. If we dont come out and play a 40 minute game on saturday then we will be done bc FLA plays 10 player rotation.

I’ll take a Calipari-coached team losing on the road in the SEC over any of the mediocrity we experienced under Tubby and Billy Clyde. Gardner-Webb at Rupp ring any bells? No? How about VMI? How about Alabama at home? How about both games vs. Vandy, when Vandy wasn’t quite so tough?

That was an embarrassing loss. 🙁 As far as the freshmen go, I think it’s *great* that Coach Cal is able to bring in five star recruits but I don’t think many of them necessarily understand what it means to other teams, especially in the SEC, to beat Kentucky. I know Cal has told them (I’m paraphrasing here) that “every game we play is somebody’s super bowl”. When you’re the all-time winningest program in NCAA basketball, of course you’re going to have a target on your back. That’s part of the reason that there’s so much hate towards the program. I don’t believe for a second that most of the kids that are interested in playing at UK now want to do so because of the history of the program or because it’s always been their dream to play basketball at Kentucky. If we’re truly being honest with ourselves, their most likely reason for wanting to come here is that they see John Calipari as a coach who can get them into the NBA as soon as possible. Everybody remembers last year’s NBA draft when we had five players selected in the first round and Coach Cal said that he thought it was the greatest moment in the history of Kentucky basketball? I think he was, in part, saying that because he knows that that’s a *HUGE* recruiting tool because that’s where the kind of kids he’s recruiting want/expect to end up. Tonight, UK was the super bowl for Ole Miss and they played unlike any other game they’ve played thus far this season. You have to give them credit for their effort. They deserved the win and we didn’t.

I don’t even know where to begin with Miller, Liggins and Harrellson. They each have moments where you see just what they’re capable of. And then something happens and it’s gone. There was one point in the first half where Liggins was defending Chris Warren and he looked like an octopus having a grand mal seizure!!! It was unreal. Then a couple of minutes later, Warren is flying right past him to the basket. I’m not sure what to think about Harrellson. I know he’s leading the SEC in rebounding and I’m not trying to take that away from him. But sometimes I feel like people are just trying to be positive and “make the best of a bad situation” with him because he’s all we’ve got. If Kanter were playing, I wonder if you’d see Harrellson for more than 2 or 3 minutes a game? And Darius Miller…..I love the guy and I think he’s more talented than even he realizes. But sometimes I just wanna reach into the TV, kick him in the ass and say ‘WTF man?’. It’s like he’s struggling with success or something. He can be great for five minutes and then it’s like, ‘Hey! I’m awesome. Wait, am I allowed to be awesome? Maybe I’ll just take a mental break for a minute and think about that.’

Admittedly, Miller, Liggins and Harrellson were never really called upon much to provide experience and leadership last year. But if there were ever a time to start doing just that, especially for Harrellson, this is it. March is not that far away and the road ahead is not going to get any easier for them with Florida, Vandy and Tennessee all still waiting in the wings. I hope Coach Cal and the guys are able to figure out what’s holding them back, especially on the road, or it could be a very disappointing tournament for Kentucky fans. 🙁

Did Wooden and Rupp stand up on the side line and yell and scream the whole game.
They did their yelling and screaming in practice. All they did was lead and know when to make calculated decisions on timeouts, substitutions, changing defenses, etc. They had them ready to play every game. All they had to do is give a player a look or put them on the bench for a while to make a statement about their performance or lack their of. Watch Cal and Pearl, they scream and yell at players the entire game. That means they obviously didn’t get it done in practice.

    10:12 pm February 1, 2011 Permalink

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. For whatever reason, Miller doesn’t want the ball in crunch situations and disappears in big games. The expectation is that he will change, but he won’t…it is apparently imbedded in his DNA. His lack of consistency is a constant. That doesn’t make him a bad kid, it just makes him a player who will never reach his full potential. Lets give up on the illusion that he will step up and thrive in pressure. Treat him with respect, play him less, take him out in crunch time, put other kids in for experience, and look beyond this year.

What we’ve got are three freshmen, who are really good, but they are not first round draft pick freshmen. They have no consistent help around them. These three frosh need to stay around, and then and only then will we be strong (next year). Right now, we are simply middle-of-the-pack. And middle-of-the-pack will lose games on the road when teams (even Ole Miss) shoot well. We need to adjust our expectations of this team. We are not a premier team. Not even close. We will do well to make the tourney, and if we do, we will do well to win two games. So let’s not be too surprised by tonight’s loss. This talk about being a #2 or #3 seed in the NCAA is a total joke. We will lose at the very least, four more games (and win five at the most). That leaves us at 21-9 overall, and 9-7 in SEC. That would be a good year for this middle-of-the-pack team.

Listen guys this loss isn’t on miller because hey we know what we get with this guy. He’s always gonna fold just isn’t in his DNA to make the most of his considerable talents. The freshmans might not have played as well as some people would have hoped but they at least stayed aggressive and did all they knew how to win if u are gonna take away from miller for that at least credit the fighting the freshman. This teams biggest problem is the dribble drive offense, there’s a reason no one else in college basketball use it. It’s a bus h league offense for high school kids. Coaches figure our offense out and beat us to death. Once the opposing coach makes adjustments our coach doesn’t k ow what to do, he absolutely comes up short on the X’s and O’s portion of coaching. The only way to win a championship is to get just an unreal recruiting class and overwhelm teams with talent. Look again at the west virginia game Huggins starts sagging in a caliper looks completely lost on te sideline. Look at caliparis record against winning coaches.

228….Dumb ass…Yes Jones did hit free throws down the stretch. It was great to see. Just because he hit those free throws doesn’t mean he doesn’t need to improve his technique and continue to be coached to do so. The same is true about Cal. Just because he has 30 game win seasons doesn’t mean he’s got it all figured out and doesn’t need to improve. So, my post was about Cal improving as a Coach and if you had read the entire post before losing your head like a dumb ass you would have seen that I was using Jone’s free throw shooting as an example.

Are real UK fans still complaining about Cal getting one and dones every year and not having a bench this year? Is it just me or was last year’s team a once and a lifetime team with two freshman that should’ve been able to go to the NBA straight from high school in Walls and Cousins who were leaders, tough and ready to play from day one and not to mention four other players including big man Orton we all thought would be here this year do you actually think this is going to happen every year and leave us with no bench? And the players on the bench our upperclassmen from another coach who couldn’t get the players like we get now. I would complain about our toughness and lack of leadership but I think our freshman did the best they could and you have to remember their kids and are not like last year’s freshman. Miller is what he is and that’s not going to change and him not taking that open shot should prove that. Liggins is the only other player we can get anything else from every now and then. Cal could’ve called at least one of those timeouts. Other than that I’ve always said this is going to be a long season. I definitely think that Coach Cal needed to call a timeout. The only thing is if he called the play at the previous timeout. The players completely loss their intensity and drive in that possession. It was very disjointed. They are young Coach needed to get them organized and make sure that everyone understands the plan. Otherwise no one knows what their doing. And especially on a night like this they needed the involvement of the coach. So, that was a great failure. Why coach so hard throughout the game if you are not going to coach at the end of the game. There are few coaches who don’t call timeout in those types of situations. Don’t understand it at all. Now having said that, they desperately needed to score on that possession. If UK doesn’t score, then UK has about a 40% or higher chance of losing. Kennedy is going to call timeout and outline Ole Miss’ best chance to get a basket. There are a number of good plays that would probably net a basket or a foul shot. If UK scores, then the chance of losing in the 2nd half goes down close to zero percent. That is how important getting points is. The team needs to reallize the criticalness of the situation. If the other team has one possession, as UK, you want to be up by 4 pts or two possessions. If the other team has probably two possessions, then you want to be up by 7 or 3 possessions. Working all out to achieve these point differentials will probably give UK a very high degree of win assurance.

Trolls are out in force tonight. If I had to watch UL lose to UK in f-ball and b-ball every year and watch the aging train wreck that is Pitino, I guess I might be a fake UK fan also. Greetings posers.

Why not use Jarrod Polson. He is not afraid to play. He plays hard and would get to the line alot. He can also handle the ball.
