Cats lose a tough one, Nerlens goes down

The Cats dropped a tough one in Gainesville 69-52, but the game was of no consequence once Nerlens Noel went down with a knee injuryin the second half. Nerlens hurt his knee running into the goalpost and was down for several minutes on the court in pain. The team carried him off the court in one of the more touching moments I’ve ever seen in the game.

As far the game goes, it was bad. After a good start, the Cats lost all rhythm when Noel had to head to the bench with foul trouble midway through the first half. From there, it was all Florida. The Cats’ guard play was incredibly frustrating, as was their inability to achieve any kind of flow on offense, but none of it mattered when Nerlens went down.

In the immediate postgame interview, Billy Donovan said that the Kentucky staff told him Nerlens would be okay. We’ll keep you updated as the night goes on.

For now, thoughts out to the big fella.

As much as Noel cares for others, contributes to charity, etc., he has to be OK. We have never had a serious injury during Cal’s tenure here, and I’d hate to think the first would be the kid with the biggest heart.

I could take an inferior team getting beat and playing their hearts out…but this bunch is just stupid and has ZERO heart. I have never seen a weaker, softer bunch of guys at this level. Cal needs to quit trying to be everyone’s pyschologist and start coaching.

The guys were outmatched. Goodwin, Poythress and Cauly-Stein play like freshman typically play…not like “one and done” players. If they go pro, all three will be in the D league to start the season and probably their whole career. They should stick around for a couple of years, get a free education and maybe learn to play basketball on another level. Then again, maybe they should just go pro…

  27. kykid
    9:17 pm February 12, 2013 Permalink

sorry but Ryan Harrow is not good. He will not be drafted like he was projected top 20 preseason. He will be playing 5-10 minutes a game next season if that, bc Polson could pass him up.

If a single play could get a players scholarship pulled, the charge 3 on 1 under the basket with Goodwin was it for me. He’s is simply not a team guy. I don’t think he knows how to be. I feel sorry for him. Its going to cost him a lot of money down the road.

Alex doesn’t know how to elevate on jump shots, can’t drive, and collectively this team has the worst court vision I’ve seen in a long time. They are deviod, of even a semblence, nor a modicum of cohesion.

As for the team – our youth showed once again. Poythress is an 18-year-old kid asked to excel against 22-year-old men. That’s not good for UK, not good for college basketball, and not good for the kid.

Our guard play is selfish as it can be…..I’d start Hood over anyone of them with the exception of polson….If you’re going to throw it away, make bad plays, bad decisions, get it blocked back into your face…..what would be the difference between Alex, Archie, and John Hood and play non defense! At least Hood would try harder!

At this point, I’d rather see Hood and Polson playing 25 minutes a game if they hustle and at least attempt to contribute. Losing isn’t the issue, it’s a lack of effort and crispness. Noel’s injury sums up the rest of the team, Noel had to hustle back because a lazy ass pass at the top of the key. Donovan and Florida capitalized on every possible weakness that Kentucky has shown throughout the year. Will any of the guys that stay even start next year?

I have grown up Blue, in rural Harrison county, started going to games at 5, went to UK for undergrad and was enrolled at UK and was in the streets in 96. UK fans are the greatest and the worst. The reactions here tonight are ridiculous. This is a terribly young team that had it reasonably close before Noel went down. They were shell shocked, so was Cal, you could see it in his face. We have done reasonably well— it is frustrating at times, but we are coming off a NC for crissakes with an awesome recruiting class coming next year. We still have a chance to get in the tourney and get something done. We have to embrace the this team as flawed. Every win is big. Every one. Harrow HAS been good at time, so has everyone on the team, they just are not tough enough yet to do it every night…

And, by the way, Florida is one of the top 5 teams with a real chance to win it wall- loaded with Seniors and Juniors. They could beat anybody in the country as bad as they beat us tonight…

Arrrrrrrchie does not deserve another second of playtime. Alex needs to get a pair and I won’t even start with Kyle. Polson needs to be our guard. Harrow, needs to go back to his mommy, Mays and Noel are the ONLY reason we were not beat by 30, period!!!!! The rest of the starters just need to be benched, cal needs to start all the Benchwarmers at Tennessee, to see if that does anything. Everybody is looking to the NBA instead of what it really takes to get there! What is wrong with this team? I am not hoping or expecting anything from next years team until they play and beat ranked teams. With Noel out, we will be lucky to make the nit, well, at least we will have 4 or 5 D-leaguers in the NBA next year!

#20 We do suck for the most part. Besides Noel and Harrow there is very little, if any, basketball IQ on this team. Some of that is attributed to youth, but we see far too much of it being in the form of idiotic plays. Archie for example, has skills but for some reason he thinks that jumping into and going horizontal backwards against 3+ defenders will get him a basket. Instead, 9 times out of 10 it’s either an easy block for the defense or an offensive foul again Archie, usually the latter. Why does he continue to do the same thing time and time again expecting a different result? He has no basketball IQ. Same goes for AP – no bball IQ and it shows on the floor. WCS, he has his share of mistakes, but they are freshman mistakes and not stupid decisions. I can deal with that, but the stupid, dumb, idiotic decisions on the court by several members of the team are what make me rage.

Very young team but the talent is there. Just not going to pull it together as fast as the other teams Cal has put on the floor.

Our guard plays the biggest reason for the record this year, nothing more. I’m not sure Harrow is any better than Polson to be honest. Given the same playing time from the start of the season I think Polson is a better player at this point. The other guys (freshman) are doing what a typical freshman do…learn, make mistakes, compete some time and not at other times.

Eh…we are still the National Champs so I’ll take a down year by UK standards. They’ll still finish second in the SEC and make the tourney. Sweet 16 would be a nice season for this young group.

The reality is these guys are just not that great. This was a really down year for talent, recruitung wise. Seriously, how many really good freshmen are there in college BB total? Combine that with us losing essentially our entire NC team and you have a recipe for a down year for us. There just was not enough talent available for us to replace the guys we lost so this year was destined to be a year for a veteran team. Just about every team that is doing better are veteran teams this year.

He was the only one to run back and clean up on defense and as far as I’m concerned the only one with any real heart. Maybe Cal will point this out to them on tape, but I just don’t understand how they continue to make some of the mistakes they do. No fast break passing, no help defense, no offensive rhythm. Hopefully It will get better though.. My Prayers go out to Nerlen’s and the rest of the team.

Everyone bashes archie but atleast he knows their is a game going on. Harrow was scared to death of wilbekin. I think he drove once the whole game. How could cal after seeing him go against teague think he could lead this team . Also can we run a play that gets wiltjer an open look.

For me, the refs caused the injury on Noel and his team mates. LAZY LAZY LAZY play by Harrow, Goodwin, Poythress, all caused the injury to Noel. He was busting his ass to try get the team going, wile the rest of the team STUNK the floor up. The 2 quick whistles in 1st half were the REFS FAULT. Noel the only bright spot on this team, was trying as hard as he could, while his so called team mates walked around the floor and made bad play after bad play. If I were Noel, I would kick their ass myself. It was the one single most lack luster effort by a UK team since BCG coached here. I have never felt bad to be a UK fan, even when BCG was here, than I do tonight. I am sick to my stomach. I hope Cal runs their asses in the dirt for three straight days, until they quit the team. I could play with more effort than any of Goodwin, Poythress or Harrow. If I were them I would just go home and let the guys who want to play, play. I would rather see Hood, Poulson, Stien , Whiltjer and Mayes play. If anyone thinks these guys are ready for the NBA, they are some dumb people.

    This and that:

Over and above Noel’s injury (and just looking at it I suspect that even if it isn’t enough to put him out for the rest of the year Coach Cal is going to do what Pitino did with Anderson and refuse to play him even if cleared by the doctors, not wanting to risk his NBA career) is the fact that once again Kentucky’s guard play was flat out awful.

Harrow will be back next year and if Goodwin was smart he’d return as well…maybe they could learn something from the Harrison twins.

One other thing, this is also why you need more than seven or eight players who can actually play on the team. There is absolutely zero reason why UK should have two or three ‘walk-on’s’ taking up roster space.

Fortunately with guys returning next year (regardless of whether or not they like it) this won’t be a problem but it is something Cal needs to take a hard look at in the future.

He’s been fortunate from an injury standpoint in the past but it’s caught up to him this year with Beckham, Hood, Cauley-Stein and now Noel.

Finally I saw where Donovan said he was told by Kentucky medical people that Noel would be OK. He said this in his postgame press conference. I hope he’s right but I don’t think it likely.

All you negative bandwagon jumpers can go to hell! Everybody who’s followed Kentucky since Cal came knew a year like this was going to happen! Sooner or later we knew we would get a class of freshmen who played like freshmen. Big damn deal Cal has brought us back to the top. A elite 8, FF, and national Championship later and some still think they have the right to question Cal?
With a monster team coming in next year I think UK will be OK. Wiltjer, WCS, Harrow, and to a point Polson will be back to aid the best class ever so I think we will be fine.
The Most important thing now is Noel’s health! This is one of the most gracious kids to ever wear blue. The young man has done a lot for the childern at the UK hospital as well as preformed at a high level on the court. He is one of the few kids who you can really say has done more for UK then it has for him. Not very often does that occur! Hope the best for a great kid who will be the a top 5 draft pick!! UK is better for having him. Prayer go out for him tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seen enough of Goodwin, Harrow, and Poythress. One is too selfish, one is too wimpy, and the other has been begged to play the greatest game at the greatest university. It’s obvious that these guys thought that just be attending UK you’ll be drafted. Totally ignored the character, work ethic, and ambition required to elevate their game and insodoing elevating the team. I was embarassed to hear my 10 yr old complaining about the play of this team tonight. Sad to say he was right on all accounts.

I can support freshman when they play like freshman; all of the mistakes, all of the out-of-control plays, but tonight, there were just too many times it was just the lack of hustle. And rather than focus on the negative, I was just wondering why we don’t see more of players like Hood and I just have to go off of what Cal is saying. He brags on Hood in practice and is trying to figure out how he can get him to play that way in the game. If we are going to lose badly, I would rather have it with someone that is giving it his all.

Write this down y’all… Nerlens injury won’t be as bad as it seems. It looked like a straight on impact with the padded b-ball standard and his knee was covered with a pad. He’s probably dislocated and/or bruised his patella and the surrounding tissue. (Maybe also hyperextended the joint). I bet his ligaments are still sound and surgery won’t be necessary. Rest and rehab will bring him back.

Kinda soft, kinda slow, kinda stupid, kinda young. yesh, it sucks, but we’ll be fine. Hopefully Noel’s injury will forge some sort of a vision of heart for these guys. The team should kick Archie’s as_, not BBN.

    127) I hope your right because if there ever was a kid who doesn’t deserve to have this happen it’s Nerlens! He one of the best kids to ever have Kentucky across his chest! All the negative Nancys can have their fun tonight. I only hope Noel is ok for the draft.
We get beat by a top 5 team on their home court and some act like the sky is falling! I know it’s hard for some to accept but Flordia has a better team then we do this year! That’s ok we just won the NC and could very well have one of the better teams ever put together next year. Guess we should fire the coach?
