Cats look awful, lose to Notre Dame 64-50

Well, that sucked.

In what may have been one of the worst performances in the Calipari era, the Cats fell to Notre Dame, 64-50. Kentucky failed to achieve any sort of rhythm on either side of the court and looked helpless against Notre Dame’s zone.

The only silver linings in the game were admirable performances by Julius Mays and Nerlens Noel, who attempted to mount a comeback with five minutes left. Mays finished with 16 points and played with more passion than the rest of the Cats combined, save Nerlens Noel, who put up 10 points and 7 rebounds.

Like it or not, we’re gonna talk about it some more. Join in for some group therapy.

  43. old_school
    9:02 pm November 29, 2012 Permalink

    UK has no depth.
Notre Dame beat us with a lot of 3-4 star recruits.

Kentucky has no such recruits and never will get them. We are 5-star or bust – meaning we will never develop a deep bench – and that will hurt.

Under Cal – we will rely on freshmen from here on out. The last three years – we had some experience. Now we’re seeing Cal’s true system. Get used to it.

And ask yourself. If you were a solid 6-7 guy – 3-4 star recruit – Why would you come to Kentucky knowing you’d be recruited over every year. As a junior and senior – you’d still sit the bench because the next 5-star high school superstar has to get his minutes and his stats so Cal’s self-acknowledged goal of getting players drafted to the NBA will come true.

From hear on out – UK is going to be hampered by inexperience and youth. Talent? Sure – loads of it. But a solid team of experienced talent like Notre Dame – will cause UK teams trouble from here on out.

And to think – Cal said we’re gonna have another 6-7 years of this?

    Oh boy.

The CATS looked out of sync most of the game….no true leader to rally them together like Darius did last year (though Mays tried to right the ship). That said, it was the first true road game in a hostile environment. (IU was that type last year). I think they beat Baylor at Rupp, but I still expect them to peak at tourney time. We have given them a pass all season on lousy defense and piss poor rebounding. “It’s still early, and they’re young.” Well, it’s time to grow up, and improve on your weaknesses. No one is in a defensive stance, everyone is out of position on defense, which leads to being out of position on rebounding. Then, when they do get their hands on a rebound, they are weak with it. Archie was all about Archie tonight, and Poytress was his usual, ridiculously LAZY self! Noel and Mays played hard, and the rest of the team stuck it up. Hood should have gotten more minutes, at least he didn’t look scared. The next practice should be 3 hours of Defensive stance, Defensive position, Defensive effort, and Rebounding. Nothing else.

“Admirable performance”? Nerlens got (old)schooled by the big white kid.

I understand it is early and we are young, but what troubles me is the apparent lack of effort or fire in this team. Yes, we are young, yes kids can have bad games, but when the other team simply wants it more that you do, and it is that obvious….there is a problem.

  85. mlvei
    9:11 pm November 29, 2012 Permalink

This is exactly the game we needed to play. Cal has trouble getting his team to play physically and talk to each other and they get their butts kicked by a veteran team who is inferior athletically but knows how to play and the effort needed. An army lifer friend of mine told me “forced attention breeds interest”. And I think our team got forced some attention tonite and will be better for it.

18 – 100% agree….from the bloggers on this site to the people who post on message boards, WE ARE NOT THAT ATHLETIC…..going up against teams with white guys doesn’t mean we are more athletic. We are not physcially ready to play agaisnt experienced teams. Also, I do think we get better, but those that think we morph into one of the top teams in March this year will be greatly dissapointed. This year is going to be the year that CAL experiences what its like to lose at Kentucky.

113 – He will lose at Rupp this year and would have lost embarassingly had he not chickened out of the IU series.

And I never said Cal would NEVER win a title at UK. My point is that this year – this is the first year Cal’s system is fully his. The first three years he benefitted from leftover experience. Now this is all on him.

Teams full of super freshment – talent – but inexperienced. No good role players and why would a solid role player like a Feldhaus or Chuck Hays (remember – they werern’t five-star recruits) pick to come to Kentucky now? They’ll never see the floor.

But hey you forget. This isn’t about wins and losses – it’s about getting kids to the NBA. Remember – Draft night is the most important night in UK history.

When Goodwin runs with ball down court and tries to squeeze thru 4 defenders and throw up a shot……. he reminds me of when you play mario kart, get a mushroom, use it, then run into a brick wall

Nerlens reminds me of a cat while you hold a toy with feather on it and constantly trick it. Everytime he sees a player with ball in hand he always falls for the ball fake and jumps in the air.

Jon Hood had more fouls in the game than Wiltjer had 3 pt attempts….wtf

Why would Calipari pull Alex Postupress for majority of the 1st half? Reminds me of when he did same thing with Anthony Davis….cant win a game when you have no options to try and score down low.

I expected ND to win this game. If you follow sports betting at all then you will understand that the ”sharps” had ND all day long. The ”public” had UK+1 and +1.5. According to Sportsbookspy, there was over 66% or more of the money bet on UK…yet the line kept going into ND’s favor meaning there were fewer bets of larger amounts of money on ND but more bets of smaller amounts of money on UK….aka the Sharps won and Vegas won as expected to.

Now conspiracy time… didn’t it seem like the referees were heavy to call fouls/travels/out of bounds on UK? Seemed as if the Refs were playing off of the crowd and ND got every call their way. Very surprised how some of the UK players didn’t lose their mind arguing the calls. You could see some of their faces on the calls.

It was a tough game to watch for sure. But I know this team will improve and I would welcome a rematch come March. The one problem a coach has by winning a title is that expectations skyrocket as does the ‘what have you done for me lately?’ mentality. 146 – You watched a number one class tonight get owned by a team with experience. I don’t have a problem with recruiting good players – but you MUST recruit some good solid guys who are going to help and contribute to your program for 3-4 years. Most of Cal’s recruits have come to UK with one thing on their mind – and that’s playing in the NBA in one – or at the very most – two years. That is not condusive to building an experienced team.

We have a laundry list of things to work on…too many to list. But most realistic fans knew we’d struggle early on. They’ll get better and by the end of the year can be a dangerous team in the tourney capable of an Elite 8 run, possibly a FF if we could get a draw like Duke.

But honestly I’ve watched a ton of games and highlights so far this year and outside of Duke, Indiana, and Michigan (maybe Louisville), it’s pretty much guesswork on who the next best teams are. And outside Florida and Mizzou (and Tennessee and Bama to a lesser degree), the SEC is just horrible.

My disappointment with Cal didn’t start tonight after one loss. It began the moment they hired the guy. I knew what was coming, and I know what’s coming down the road.

Yes – I know the one and done rule is an NBA thing and Cal acts like he doesn’t like it – but Cal has made UK the poster program for the rule and we will live by and die by it.

Ask yourself this. If UK could go back four years ago and pick between Jordan Hulls and Eric Bledsoe again – don’t you think the Kentucky program would be in better shape had they picked Hulls? (I know – he probably wasn’t even recruited by UK and was probably a lock for IU all along – but I’m speaking of a certain type of player)

No – he’s not an NBA lottery pick. He’s not making highlight dunks. But he’s been the glue for IU for four years, and will lead this team a long way this year. Cal won’t recruit guys like that – but guys like that can make the difference – especially when your team is going to be so heavily-weighed by youth year after year.

If you are ‘real’ KY fans, then do us a favor, chop off your hands and your tongues cuz we don’t need your input…. ever. The guys need to rebound. Cooley was pushing the chit out of Noel (not getting called), but these guys need to get some hands and get the ball. No rebounds and WAY too much ‘wanna block it’ mentality. They will grow out of the ‘blockit’ crap, and into getting their hands on the basketball. Cal will not let them get away with rebounding as it stands. Wiltjer is slow. Anyone with eyes can see that. So run some screens for him and get his threes going. I don’t think the dribble/drive is going to work this year. We don’t have the personnel. BUT, get a little more traditional and these guys will destroy. Cal will make the adjustments. We’ll be competitive by December 31. All will be fine in bluegrass country. Just, freakin’ chill.

Alex is plain lazy and must of put up big high school numbers cause of his size and strength. I keep thinking it’s just being young and he will play harder but we played 4 on 5 almost entire time he was out there. Noel must quit trying to block everything or at least wait till the off guy leaves his feet before you do, hell I teach that to 10 year olds. UK had very realistic chances to win titles every one of the last 3 years. Oh how we are quick to forget about where we were before Cal showed up with all his fancy future NBA players, the NIT. You and all the 3 star players you think UK should recruit can have that shit. I can’t believe I just wasted time out of my night addressing you, troll.

Everyone got pissed off when Sean Woods said this team acted entitled…but, truth is they do. This team is not like any other team that Cal has had here. This team doesn’t play hard, plays no defense, and showed no heart. When they were down 20, there was no increase in effort. No extra intensity. And no ball pressure. Just normal, half-a$$ed effort, beleiving things would turn around on it’s own…They needed this humble pie.

Calipari said “This team is likely to start out 3-3”. Were 4-2, so were right on pace (actually a little better) than Cal predicted. He’s been arpund a minute or two and and think he knows what he’s talking about.

FYI. “Old School” is a HUGE IU fan posing as a UK fan. Hes been doing this crap since last years game in Bloomington, and tried to get UK fans fired up. Relax old school, and enjoy those Sweet 16 rings, you wont make it back this year to get another set. You heard it here first. IU WILL NOT make it out of the first round.

  223. old_school
    9:49 pm November 29, 2012 Permalink

I was born and raised a UK fan. I admire Indiana because five years ago – UK and IU were in the same low spot in the world of college basketbal.

Cal decided that his approach would be to assemble a team every eight months with 17-18 year AAU superstuds.

Tom Crean decided to build a program using great recruits and solid role players.

Last year – Cal won a title – mostly because a couple of his stars defied his plan and stayed for an extra year, and because of a senior named Miller.

This year IU is the solid number 1 team in the country.

I admire Indiana because they’re proving that you can be successful at the college game by doing it the old way. Hulls is not an NBA player – but there’s not a guard on UK’s team that is a better college basketball player than that kid.

Here’s the question. Everyone want’s UK to catch UCLA’s record of 11 titles. We’re three away. Will we do that before IU catches up to us? We’re three ahead.

Right now – given the way Crean has built his program – my money would be on IU.

And I grew up hating the Hoosiers. As an adult – I can respect them.

280 – I’m glad I gave you something to do tonight.

283 – No it is a question of one player vs. another player. Hulls wasn’t in the same recruiting class as Knight or Lamb was he? I’m talking about a one player decision.

Cal needs to find guys who will stay with the program 3-4 years. But that’s hard in his system.

Why would a 3-4 star player – who could develop into a top college player by his junior/senior year – choose to come to Kentucky when he knows he’s going to be recruited over every year and may never see significant playing time.

If Hulls came to Kentucky – he would not have developed – because Cal didn’t value him as an NBA lottery pick. Cal preaches that he’s all about “Player First” – but in all honestly – he’s only about the players that will make him look good.

Been a lot of comparisons between this team and the Brandon Knight team. They are invalid because there is no Brandon Knight or upperclass men like Miller, Liggins, or Harrelson to push them forward. This team is not physical. I think it may be a long season and we may find an even deeper appreciation of last years team.

I’m starting to dislike this team. Not because of the loses I could care less about that, but there’s no fight or pride. Not shaking hands after a game whether the rush the court or not shouldn’t happen. Maybe Sean woods was right.

So with a tough road loss behind us, let’s hope that Rupp is rocking on Saturday to give the team a boost. Baylor has yet to play in front of 7,000 fans this year. Expect the team to rebound from this poor effort and get back to winning. I will take Calipari and the National Title last year (and the great talent each year over where KY was anytime in the previous 5 years before he came here. I know this team is young and looked bad tonight, but last I checked, National Titles are still won in April.

This year will be bad – why should we think otherwise – an entire national championship team left. But next year…..all we need is a few key members of this year’s squad to return and join a group of exceptional freshmen. Remember Jones and Lamb? Magic!

    289. If you have Hulls, you might not get the other guys though. It isn’t just one guy over another guy. If we had Hulls, Lamb might have said “no thanks.” To get these guys to come, you have to have roster spots for them. It is a question over über talent versus solid experience. If you have the 3-4 star guys, the 5-stars want to go elsewhere because they aren’t as needed. You can’t have both. Even Crean doesn’t get high talent. He gets mostly decent that will be good every few years. Cal chooses über talent. To fill in the experience part this year, he tried transfer students. Mays has the fire needed. Harrow is, well I don’t know what.

    305. Noel is gone, period. Even if he isn’t ready, he leaves. NBA scouts are high on him like they are with Shabazz. Stein wasn’t expected to be one-and-done, so he will be fine with his role. Goodwin and Poythress know if they transfer, they have to sit out a year anyway, so they really have nothing to gain. Yes, they might have to play backup. However, it gives them a fire to earn that starting spot, and it gives the incoming talent competition. Lamb and TJ and Miller were fine with being overshadowed at times. Miller gladly came off the bench. Cal promises you nothing according to the recruits. You have to earn your start-ask Harrow, who thought he’d be the point. If they came here automatically expecting to be a lottery pick without putting in the effort and just expecting things, that is their fault really. Cal tells them hey have to work for it.

If you hate the way things are run, why stick around? Go be an IU fan if you admire them so much. Come out of the closet to yourself.

And if you’ll notice, old_school, Cal always recruits one lesser talented guy along with his uber talent. Dodson and Poole transferred because they didn’t want to put in the development effort. They probably would have developed more if they hadn’t come in expecting to be like Wall and Knight their first year. Wiltjer was that recruit last year, and he is getting more minutes even though he is still a defensive liability. This year it was supposed to be WCS. Next year is Willis.

I truly believe he can win with this team…if he plays a zone. I believe this team just doesn’t have the quickness at the 3-4-5 positions to play man to man at an elite level. Not only would a zone shore up some of the horrendous defense, but it would help them rebound a little better too. I hate zones, but this is just one of those teams that would probably do better to cover an area and not have to think so much.

Wiltjer is a liability playing man, but in a zone, his 6’9 frame would cause some issues. Poythress is also kinda slow on defense, and can’t block anyone out. A zone would fix that.

A few years ago, Pitino took a struggling team at UL to the final four when he decided to switch to a zone. I still believe we will get better and get at least a sweet 16 regardless, but I think this team could be elite with a zone. Just an opinion.
