Cats get their groove back, beat Samford 88-56

That felt better.

The Cats shook off back-to-back loses with an easy 88-56 win over Samford. Kentucky overpowered the Bulldogs in the first half, holding them to only 14 points. In the second half, Samford came out strong, going on a 9-0 run before the Cats woke up and went to work on defense.

Willie Cauley-Stein finished with his first career double-double, putting up 12 points and 12 rebounds. Archie Goodwin led the team in scoring with 18 points, followed by Alex Poythress with 16.

It wasn’t always pretty, but it was a win. Go Cats.

Well, they hit the shots they were supposed to hit tonight, albeit against a tiny Samford team. Let’s see what the next three weeks being but the game left me feeling better.

Showed signs of life tonight, I was pleased with how they looked and the offense looked better tonight. We still miss to many close shots, but a win is a win and I’m happy with the improvement.

Also there is no reason hood cant play the 4 instead of wilter, he may not be as tall but that doesnt matter when wilter cant jump a lick.

#20. I stated the cold hard facts that this team is not that good, at least not compared to past versions. Let’s revisit in March. Just saying, no expectations here for a deep run in the tourney. Dont see an SEC regular season or SEC tournament title.

Cal used this game to get the boys a “game scrimmage”. He worked on different rotations and hammered them on the defensive end. What they will have to work on now is the second half with a lead. You come out and finish the job, intensity level high.
They are rough right now but will come along, just need time. #22 is correct, this team is just not good right now, but they will get better the more they play together and understand what it takes at this level.

Hood had 6 points in 4 minutes of play, making him technically he most productive player on the team. Meanwhile, Witjer was 1/5 for threes. As much as I love Kyle, gotta agree with #1

This year is a prime example of why UK needs out of the SEC. Looks like our football is trying to compete untill we get brought back to reality next year. It’s just unfair to expect Stoops to get to the top of the SEC. It just isnot possible. We could have a good team and still lose every SEC game. Now our Basketball team is young and taking a few lumps early. The only problem is the SEC sucks barring UF. If we went undefeated in league play it would give us but one good win.
I know we will stay in the SEC because the money is just too good to pass up we all know we should be in the ACC where basketball rules the land and would give our football program a fighting shot at being relavent.

Time for Cal to pull the plug on the Justin Beiber experiment at PG. He is still living off the MD game. Ryan Harrow needs more minutes to get comfortable running the team. Wiljer is struggling big time. Noel was a beast and set the tone for the team. Goodwin was Good. Cauley Stein was just fine. Poythress played ok. Overall dominating performance against a bad team.

I agree with a lot of folks above, it’s about time to stop the experimentation. And time to install Harrow as the point guard. And put Cauley-Stein in the starting lineup. Harrow, Goodwin, WCS, and NN. And the fifth spot can be shared by Mays, Wiltjer, and Hood. We can be unbeatable.

The problem is the ACC might not be around much longer with the reports Florida State might now head to the Big 12 and with the SEC openly admitting they are courting both Duke and North Carolina.

#40 I don’t think Duke and UNC are coming to the SEC but if they do that would be a great situation for UK. Then we wouldn’t need to leave because that would give us 2 teams that would we should compete with in the SEC and make 4 legit BB schools.
I would Realy like to see UK use some of its weight to bring these schools to the SEC and get the SEC to think about BB when adding schools. I don’t see it happening though. Simply because I see FSU coming to our league the SEC has been after them for years. I hope I’m wrong but I don’t see the SEC concerning itself will what’s best for BB football money is just to big.

  46. Go to it strong
    11:05 pm December 4, 2012 Permalink

I don’t think the white boy being on the floor has been the problem. Think it’s got a little bit to do with the freshmen not buying in yet. Calm down people this is a possibility when you go the one and done path we all wanted. This team will be fine by march. We just got a little spoiled with last years team.
I’ll take a down year for a Elite 8,FF,and NC. This group just isn’t as good as the ones Cals had in the past. A sweet sixteen is a more realistic goal for this squad. Then next year we will be closer to what we have been used to. Noel is the only sure lock to go pro off this team.

31 & 34… u people need to stfu and get a clue. kentucky leave the sec?!?!? have u lost ur mind? please realize that basketball is second fiddle to football NO MATTER what conference u are in. and i am 100x more of a kentucky bball fan than football fan but that is just how it is. all the acc has in basketball over the sec is unc/duke. if the sec had louisville or indiana we would blow that away tenfold.
and time to “stop the experimentation”-34. u could go out there and coach these guys against samford and maybe win by 10 because you would get outcoached, simply. some of u have no idea what really goes into this and how competitive it is and think u seriously have an idea what the answers are. again, get a clue…. clowns.
