Cats’ Freshmen Can’t Get it Done; Fall Short to MSU

Whitlow has had his hands full the past two weeks. (h/t UKathletics)

Whitlow has had his hands full the past two weeks. (h/t UKathletics)

Jalen Whitlow and Pat Towles had their first opportunity to step in as starting QB, but none could perform well enough to get close to a win. The Cats lost 27-14, with the game seeming much more out of reach than a mere 13 points. Towles sprained his ankle after a stellar first drive that resulted in a Touchdown, and did not return to the game in the 2nd Half. Whitlow got another TD for the Cats, but they needed much more. I’ll have a full game analysis shortly.

Pat Towles played good. 5-6 for 76 yards and 1 touchdown. Why wasn’t he in longer?

It’s easy to say the Cats are pathetic and lacking in many ways.
I did not see a single player quit on any play today.
They are trying their guts out against superior athletes and coaching.
    Let’s give them credit.
And, let’s hope for a medical redshirt for Towles who looked terrific.

Why is it that the Cat’s seem to get so many players injured? Is it lack of size, conditioning, or what? At the rate it’s going Joker won’t have enough players left to put on the field by the end of the season.

    A few thoughts…
*we looked exactly like what we are – a very young team
*both QBs looked very promising today against a good SEC defense
*I’m the first one to support getting our hometown boys on the field but Mikie Benton is a defensive liability. Your FS can’t be a liability in coverage getting beat deep in zone & getting torched in man coverage. He had some pathetic tackle attempts too where the WR packed him for 3-4 yards or broke the tackle completely. He’s good for 1-2 big hits per game and that’s about it. Please get one of the Blaylocks on the field in his place.
*Something to really think about…the phantom offensive pass interference call against Collins when no defender was near him at any point…call killed the drive and took away the big completion…kept the score difference at 13 when the point spread was 10…not a conspiracy person but looks funny to me…Kentucky wasn’t winning the game regardless but just really fishy

Poor play calling again hindered our chances to be more competitive. How many plays did we try running the ball up the middle and get stuffed yet the coaches kept calling the same running plays? And what’s with all the injuries? Looks like Joker is the Pitino of college football. Always slow to start and way too many injuries.

Our skill players look really good. When the line opens holes the backs are through them an on their way. But the holes are not there very often. The defensive line does nothing and the defensive backs are not put in positions to succeed. And by the way can we contain the corners on defense? I see a lot more issues on defense than offense. I think the defense has the players, it may be that we just need to change things up.

#16 we did play man defense and were beaten like a red-headed step-child…they went at Benton every time and went at Lowery when he was matched up on their best WR…that call didn’t make much sense to me…wouldn’t Neloms, when he was in, or Quinn have been the better match-up

I’d much rather have a true sophomore Towles to lead us to a bowl game again than a RS Freshman Towles to lead us to 3 stinking wins or not even play at all as a RS Freshman. Should not have played Towles. Whitlow is better. Towles threw a touchdown on a way underthrown ball and LaRod caught because the corner fell down. Jalen gives us the best chance to win. He is just a freshmen. Thought the D played well considering the massive injuries. The offensive PI on Darly Collins killed a drive. And Jalen taking a sack on 3rd and 4 after the onside kick recovery killed us.

It does Towles no good to play with a lame duck coach who throws 3 yard passes on third and eight. He then has to learn the right way with a coach who knows what he’s doing. This year is a wash and him playing is a waste.

He’ll be a hot commodity that will require big $$$ to come here. It’ll take a ton of money to get a coach like that here where the facilities are shit, the fans are fickle, and the homegrown talent is mediocre

Hiring a better coach is the first step in making the COMMITMENT to being good in football. Joker Phillips is a good guy, but not the answer. Using Towles now is a waste, especially, since Joker is likely to be gone. Losing at QB is not good experience. Being taught to throw 3 yard passes on third and eight is not good experience. This year is a wash.

BlueCat “a.k.a. dumb ass”, the first step is to upgrade the facilities & put more money into the program. Until then, a decent coach won’t think twice about coming here, especially Leach. Petrino may be desparate enough, but the Hell with that guy. And, really only 2 people with balls enough to say I? Cowards

WSU is a pit stop. You continue to prove your ignorance. Did I ever say he was going to stay at WSU? He’s out the door on the first decent offer and NO Kentucky is not a decent enough offer for him. And, to be quite honest, Washington probably has more talent than Kentucky goes.

*Make plans to upgrade ALL football facilities before a coaching change is even considered
*Put at least close to the same amount of money into football as you do basketball
*Only if #1 & #2 are satisfied go after a real coaching hire like Kirby Smart or John Chavis

Kentucky is not a step up from Texas Tech. He has Texas Tech at a level that Kentucky has never been. After having the benefit of recruiting homegrown kids in Texas, I doubt he’d want to trade that in for a couple kids from Trinity and the occasional 3* from the rest of the state, especially when KY kids have three viable options now. And, you’re right so keep hiding behind your computer chicken shit. I should probably stop before I get charged with harrassing a minor.

First things were different back then. In today’s world if you want win for the long-term, you better have yourself some facilities if you want a good coach, good players, and wins. Secondly, crazier things have happened. Once upon a time we beat #1 and eventual national champ LSU. We play that game 1,000 times and we lose the next 999. It’s college football, shit happens. Address? You first, I’m not letting you send me anthrax in the mail. Bowling Green is more than I’ve heard from you.

Name a public spot then, name caller. The point is good coaching makes a difference. It is the most important ingredient. WKU outcoached us. No way should WKU ever beat UK. Joker should be gone for that alone, period.

Texas Tech, prior to Leach, was just like us, losers. Leach did not have great facilities, he gets 5th pick in the area for recruits due to Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and even Arkansas. At this point getting an offensive guru for head coach is a priority. The only time UK has been decent in the SEC the last 25 years has been when they were a very good passing team. We need a coach who knows the passing game because we can’t compete with the rest of the SEC with smash mouth football. So you have to finesse them with the passing game.

#64 Thomas…The pass was deliberately underthrown becatlouse the receiver was so wide open. Towles is a pure passer, where Whitlow is more a runner/passer type.

Towles will never fit Joker’s system which relies on the running game. To get the best from Towles, Joker would have to go to a more open passing attack. Whitlow ia a better fits for joker’s running and short passing game.

If UK replacies Joker with a passing offensive coach, Towles will be his man.
