Cats drop a heartbreaker, 73-72, at Indiana

iu-buzzer(KY Forward)

I’ve been around this site for a while. I’ve written several post game summaries. I have never had to do one while my hands were shaking from anger/disappointment/bewilderment, but I can now cross that off my list. This was a game that Kentucky did not necessarily deserve to win, if ‘deserve’ means that they were the better overall team on the day. But, deserve or not, Kentucky had the game won…right up until they didn’t. They seemed to have overcome an absolutely terrible first half performance, a no-show by Terrence Jones, Anthony Davis’ first bout with foul trouble and the raucous environment in Bloomington to battle back and pull out a tough win on the road. Instead, they had a lapse in free throw shooting, and then concentration, at the worst possible time, giving Christian Watford the chance to sink his heart-breaking three at the horn to upset the Cats. His shot simultaneously put the first loss on the UK’s record and put Indiana back on the college basketball map. I hate him.

Onto the notes…

–First things first, you have to give credit to the Hoosiers. They played hard, they withstood every Kentucky run, and they earned the win. Yes, they got several bounces (and calls) to go their way, but when you’re the aggressor those things seem to happen. Indiana never doubted that they could win the game and, save for a couple of minutes in the second half when their offense reverted to going 1-on-1, they never strayed from their gameplan to take it straight at Kentucky and it worked all day long. Kentucky could’ve, and probably should’ve, won the game, but this was simply Indiana’s day. They deserve all the credit they can get.

–Now onto the last play. Yes, Kentucky should have fouled. They had two fouls to give and Cal said after the game that the plan was to foul and leave IU with only a couple of ticks to inbound and try and make a shot. Marquis Teague tried to foul in the backcourt and UK missed another opportunity to give one up as Indiana drove into the lane before the kickout. Watford hit a big shot, but it was one he never would have had the opportunity to take if the Cats had executed the way they should have. It’s a mistake that most will chalk up to being a young team, but when you blow a play that is as simple as just hacking someone before they can nail a dagger to win a game, it’s really just a lack of focus and execution. However, the lesson is likely learned and if there is a next time for a situation like this I expect the Cats to get it right.

–I’m not going to spend a lot of time talking about free throws down the stretch. We all saw it. You have to hit the free throws, especially Doron Lamb. He’s the person everyone wants at the line in that situation, and he will continue to be even though he missed a huge one. But, part of winning close games (especially on the road and in March) is hitting your free throws. Kentucky has to do better if they’re going to reach the heights they’re capable of.

–Aside from the failures in the last 30 seconds, the major negative to take away from the game was the performance (or lack thereof) of Terrence Jones. Cal said after the game that Jones gave the Cats ‘zero’, and they essentially played crunch time without him in the game. He registered a completely unacceptable and mind-boggling line of 4 points, 1 rebound and 6 turnovers in 28 minutes on the day. Four points. One rebound. Six turnovers. That’s exactly two more points and two less rebounds than Eloy Vargas. Eloy Vargas was not a preseason All-American, and Jones certainly didn’t play like one today. If he had made any kind of positive impact on the game, Kentucky wins. Instead, he was a complete no show in a game where the veterans should have been the steadying force that saw the team through in a tough environment. Doron Lamb, and eventually Darius Miller, performed those roles like they should have, while Jones played poorly enough to warrant riding the pine down the stretch. He’s too good of a player to put up a performance like this in a big game, and I expect him to bounce back. For today, though, Jones was the Cats’ biggest disappointment.

–One guy who looked like he was poised to join Jones in the doghouse, at least in the first half, was Marquis Teague. In the first 20 minutes he turned the ball over, missed easy layups and played generally out of control. He even started the second half on the bench, but when he came back in the game he looked like a completely different player. Teague scored every one of his 15 points after the half and looked more like the player that we expected than he has all season. That second-half performance alone would be enough to get excited about, but to do it in a game where he was under immense pressure in front of a home-state crowd that was very hostile toward him showed a lot of guts. It was a loss for the Cats, but I feel like Teague grew up in the second half and it was a performance he can build on.

–The best player on the floor today for the Cats, by far, was Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. He was locked in and aggressive from the start, and ended up with 18 points and 9 boards on 9-12 shooting. He got it done on both ends, cleaned up the glass in Jones’ absence and carried the Cats through the first 20 minutes while every one else except Lamb basically looked like a deer in headlights. There’s no doubt that he is the motor of the team and he was the only player to give a consistent performance over the whole game. Even in a loss, he was a joy to watch.

–We’ll hit on a few points for some of the other guys:

—>Doron Lamb also played well for the most part, and although his 5-14 field goal shooting performance wasn’t sparkling, he was one of the few guys who was aggressive and looking to score, leading the team with 19 points. The free throw he missed at the end is what people will remember, and rightfully so, but it shouldn’t be lost on folks that he was one of the few that came to play from the start.

—>Darius Miller’s day was a story of two halves. In the first, he was a non-factor and looked like vintage Disappearius. In the second, he carried the Cats for a stretch. He answered Indiana’s shots and kept Kentucky in the game as the Hoosiers were trying to make a decisive second-half run. People are conditioned to be disappointed in Miller, but today he overcame a tough first half and played like a senior after the break, which was what the team needed.

—>Anthony Davis had the toughest game of his young career. Indiana clearly wanted to go straight at him to get him in foul trouble, and they were extremely successful in doing so, albeit with at least one questionable call helping along the way. Davis has to do a better job of staying straight up on people or teams will continue to try and get him off the floor with fouls. When he’s on the bench the team is completely different and it showed today. It was a difficult game for him, especially considering the missed free throw at the end, but Davis is still developing and will learn from this one. He’s still a beast.

—>WLOY!! The basket Eloy got was huge and he played as well as we’ve seen him play thus far.

And finally, some quick hitters:

-If I had to hear Dick Vitale talk about getting the ball to Cody Zeller one more time, my head was going to explode. We get it, Dickie V. You don’t have to tell us every single time down the floor.

-Indiana shot 9-15 from outside, including hitting their first six, and 7-9 overall, after halftime. In the last two games, Kentucky has given up 20-33 (60.6%) from three-point land. That has to get fixed.

-Yes, Mr. Oladipo. That was a nice dunk.

-The officiating in the first half was awful. That is all.

That’s just about it. It’s a regular season loss that hurts as bad as any in recent memory, but there are some positives to take away. The fight the Cats showed in the second half, while not matched by their execution in the final minute, was encouraging. I love the toughness they demonstrated and if there’s one major silver lining from the loss it’s that this team has shown it’s not easy to put away. Unfortunately for the Cats, on this Saturday, unlike the last, they ended up on the wrong end of a 73-72 score in a game that came down to the final ticks. All we can hope for is that the team will learn and grow from this moving forward. For now, though, it’s time to pick up and move on until the Cats lace ’em up against poor, poor, UT-Chattanooga one week from today. That’s all for now. See you tomorrow.

Cal’s post game was a joke. He didn’t really talk about Jones. Just another example of how Cal lets his players run the show. Jones should have been suspended earlier for fleeing the scene. But Cal must keep his balls in his wife’s purse.

IU and UNC gave us their BEST shot, and we won one, and should have won another.

By the way, put those teams in the gym in practice, and they don’t shoot 60%. Teams really have a knack for elevating their performance against us.

My ONLY critcism of Cal is in relation to Wiltjer.

When we NEEDED scoring, Witljer passed up WIDE open shots because it is CLEAR Cal has told him not to shoot. So one of our potentially most explosive scorers is afraid to shoot. We know Wiltjer is not in there for defense and rebounding, and on a day when TJ is handing the ball to the opposition, not rebounding or scoring, let Wiltjer come in and LIGHT IT UP !!

On the free throw shooting, what’s up with the heads right behind the backboard? I understand the stuff on the sides and even underneath the basket, but right behind the backboard waving in direct line of sight with the rim??? WTF.

They were literally standing in the aisles to do that. Do we do that? Do other teams? I honestly don’t know and I’m just curious.

I will support the kid until I know for sure what was going on. –and that is the crutch of all of this. As a pre season all american, you are thrust into the spotlight as any entertainer out there in any other field. When you show the lack of effort that he demonstrated, it is just plain natural for the speculation to run wild.

Coach or someone needs to address this overly rediculous effort. If it’s a medical reason, personal reason, etc… It needs to be stated. Otherwise, it is natural for the rumor mill to run rampid and terrible things to grow and grow in regards to TJ.

By the way, I am usually all over the refs, but I thought they let teams play. We got fouled on a bunch of shot attempts, but a bunch of our steals could have been called fouls and they missed a few travels by Lamb.

Anthony Davis’s second foul was caused by TJ coming OVER Davis’s back pushing him into the shooter. Watch the tape. His third and fourth fouls were just dumb. Hacking across arms and lunging at a threee point shooter? Come on, Anthony. You’re smarter than that.

Oh well, GREAT game to learn from. I truly believe we don’t lose another game.

Cats will be fine. Right now, just performing on talent. No real flow on offense, and have not learned how to defend (especially in transition, leaving open shooters all over the floor).

Two things I did not like though:
    1) Gilchrist (instead of Miller), should have been on Watford in the 2nd half.
    2) At the end of the game when we rebounded an IU miss, you can’t pass to Davis when the other team is going to foul. Davis is a 50 percent FT shooter. You have to get the ball to Miller or Lamb (though Lamb was awful at the line too).

Hey guys, please listen. Sometimes I roll the ball out there and my players do not produce. It is too difficult for me to teach them how to win. There are three keys to winning: #1 – you need good players, #2 – you need good players & #3 – you need good players. So hey, I will add a couple of McDonald’s All-Americans and we will be fine.

Cal basically let Jones know he can do whatever he wants off the court when he refuses to suspend him after he fled the scene of a wreck. That speaks volumes. Cal is a win at all costs coach and his track record proves he will not do the right thing.

As a team one wanted to win the other thought it would have been nice to have won. Foul shots and missed layups would have more than sealed the win before the last few minutes. The best team on this night won. Begs the question of do they practice foul shots or have anyone to instuct them?

Well, now we have another week to get ready for UT Chattanooga. I was disappointed that Wiltjer wouldn’t try a three while he was open out there. The freshmen will grow and I hope that Wiltjer will hang in there because he will be really good when the playing time becomes more avilable next year. I hope that Cal can get Jones attention. He is real important for us to be the elite team that we know we can be. Growing pains and authority can be difficult for all of us some time or another. I still believe we will lose about three more games, likely on the road in the SEC. It will be hard to win at Vandy, Florida and Mississippi State. This team will get much better as the season continues and I hope we can run off a long winning streak. Go Cats!

Indiana played a great game and deserved to win based on their effort. UK still should have won based on talent and grit… and, of course, had they hit just a couple more free throws. That being said, from the point UK was up 20-14 until halftime, the refs swallowed their whistles on several UK possessions… some consecutively. I understand that can happen and probably should happen when you play on the road, but there were several bad calls or no-calls that completely halted UK’s run and switched momentum back to IU. This game was a great learning experience for Kentucky — something that will help them in March.

But congrats to IU. I’m glad they got this win against us because they needed a jolt in their program and Crean is a great coach. Their fans, although completely annoying this past week, can now have hope that they will be better than bottom feeders in the Big Ten/12.

My biggest problem is this. #15 you hit on it, Davis getting the ball with 25 sec left at half court and taking the foul. Davis gets a rebound, passes to Lamb, who passes to Teague, who passes to Davis, who gets fouled and bricks the front end of a 1 and 1. If you go back and watch there is a point shortly after in a timeout where Jones looks at Lamb and tells him to keep the ball, which is exactly what I was getting at. In that situation Lamb should know he should keep the ball and take the foul. Even though he didn’t have a great night at the line, he is the best free throw shooter on the team and if we have the chance to have him at the line at the end of the game, then we need to grab that opportunity by the balls and not let go. I think everyone would agree that we would feel much more comfortable if Lamb had been going to the line rather than Davis with a chance to build our lead to 3.

Cal always has the best players. He is the best college coach in the game,…except when the game is actually being played. He is an average to poor game coach!!! Hence, he has NO championship titles. This team is possibly good enough to win in spite of him,..but we shall see. No excuse for him letting Teague screw up time after time after time the first half. He’s got Teague afraid to shoot a crip shot. Talk about no confidence!!! If he is afraid o shoot a crip,..and can’t make one when he does,..then he has no reason to be in the ballgame. That’s Cal’s fault!!!!!! I love Cal,..but he is a poor game coach. His sole goal this year should be to keep Anthony Davis in the ballgame,..whatever it takes!!!! No reason Davis should have guarded Zeller. And whoever he put on him,..should have had double team helpn him like we did his older bro. Cal is a poor game coach. Always has been,..always will be. He doesn’t understand. No reason to have Jones on the bench at the end of the game. Very stupid indeed!!! One single play could have made the difference. But it’s hard to make a play when you are on the bench. Kentucky does not deserve Terrence Jones. He gives up millions to come back,..and the fans are still down on him. Bless his heart. The Cats had twice the talent the Hoosiers put on the floor. And due to stupid game coaching,..they lose. Oh well.

I think its a great learning experience for UK to go on the road and compete. It was not the same in NYC or the Mohegan Sun. That being said, I know Cal learned tonight and so did the young players but what concerns me is the lack of control from Jones and Miller. If we want to indeed be “the gold standard” we need to learn how to win.

    Few things….

    1) Two fouls to give at the end and we can’t foul anyone to run some time off the clock? Why was everyone out of the paint on Lamb’s last free throw? Wouldn’t some pressure, and/or a foul bringing the ball up, have made IU take some more time off the clock and they probably don’t even get that shot off?

    2) What’s with the baseline runner screen to the wing offense that they wanted to run all day? IU couldn’t stop dribble drive, yet we kept running a roody pooh set play offense the entire first half that we’ve not run damn near all year?

Jones…well, nothing to say about Terrence. Not sure where his head was and I tip my hat to Coach Cal for keeping him out the last 5 minutues, although I don’t know that it’ll get a message across to him. But, I still can’t understand those first two things, espeically that set play to start most every offensive stint over and over that never worked. Their guards couldn’t stop dribble drive and we pretty much tossed it away.

    10:59 pm December 10, 2011 Permalink

Stop worrying. We played terrible and lost at the buzzer to a team that played out of thier minds. Cal will fix it. When will you sheep realize Cal is not a coach? He has 6 burger boys and cannot coach his way out of a wet paper bag. He runs no plays, there are no pick and rolls, you never see any screens. He rolls the ball out there and passes it off as dribble drive (AKA streetball). If he cannot overwhelm the other team in the talent catagory, he cannot win. He buys players, that is all he is good for.

Great college basketball game – regardless of the outcome.

But for someone like me who values the college game, along with the concept of student-athlete and teamwork – seeing IU win that game was satisfying.

UK has great, unmatched talent – but talent alone does not always mean success. IU also has great talent, but talent that’s been seasoned by experience and they are playing for pride – not necessarily their draft stock.

This was an old-school win by an old-school team playing the old-school way.

5,13,32,36,etc- IU had their worst shooting game of the season- yes, they hit 3’s in the 2nd half, but don’t act like they played out of their minds; both teams were overcome by the atmosphere in the 1st half and played poorly, and IU played poorly in the last 5 mins to let us back in the game. May be time to start giving them some credit. They can all hit jump shots and free throws- never really been Calipari-coached teams strengths outside of a few players

Also no crying about the officials- we shot as many free throws as them in a tough game to officiate; there’s no environment like the one in Assembly Hall in all of college basketball so it will only get easier from here

lose 1 game and the players suck? lose 1 game and the coach sucks? Grow up. You’re either with this team or you’re not. I for one remember the cats getting their butts kicked under Gillispie a few years ago to IU. Forget those times? I figured as much. IF you don’t like this coach or this team, cheer for someone else. Cal is a good coach and a good recruiter. He got UK back to being a #1 team in the nation. Isn’t that what you wanted? Are you not entertained? Forget the St. Johns game and how fun it was? Forget the UNC game and how great it was? Damn. Just stop. Enjoy the ride because its still pretty dang fun.

My worst fears realized. We had three or four guys who played poorly today. Jones is especially disappointing. He looked like he never got off the bus. I still think we should drop IU. They don’t have enough class to be on the same floor with us. Watching them rush the court was proof enough.

Lets get some perspective here. If one looks at the entire regular season, the only game UK was/will be favored by less than 5 (as in the IU game) will be the last game at FL. That includes the UNC game and when the cats play @Vandy. Those who read my comments on the line thread saw that I said UK -5 was a sucker bet and that the game should go under the total. Of course, UK is way more talented than IU (as Teague’s 2nd half abuse of Hulls showed), but those who thought this was gonna be a cakewalk were deluding themselves. This ends the outside chance that UK goes undefeated, but other than that it changes nothing. Teague showed the detractors he can play (despite his questionable judgement in passing to Davis when IU was trying to foul) and I think the Jones bashing is a bit premature (even with the childish sulking). UK is still the best team in the country and I do not think the performance today should set off any alarms among the UK fans.

Also, the guy that said that IU lost their best player in Maurice Creek is smoking crack.

Coach Cal is still the best thing going for the program so ease up.

First of all, Indiana played a hell of a game. There’s no doubting that. You people need to realize that there’s a point where you can’t guard a team shooting that well.

Jones was bad. We all realize that.

I don’t think Cal can make the FTs for the players, so let’s not blame him for that.

Besides, there’s no “bad” game coach in the NCAA. There’s a reason they get paid millions and you don’t. Calipari does a better job than any of you would, and we need to get behind him and this team.

One loss isn’t a killer. This team can and will be special. MKG, Teague, and Miller, even Lamb, have come up big. Davis had an off night, his first this year. Don’t worry. GO CATS.

Jones didn’t produce because IU was just waiting for him in the post. You force it inside so much the defense is ready to steal it from you. Does anybody know how many 3’s we shot in the 2nd half? They just totally avoided them. Wiltjer kills me by passing up his wide open 3’s.

I hate that the Kats lose but it creates a opportunity for this young team to learn before March Madness. Kats need to hit foul shots. Do not loose focus ever. Defend the three. All of these items have haunted us in the tournament the last two years. Maybe we learn, maybe we don’t but the opportunity is now available. I bet by the end of the season, this game is viewed as a very valuable tough lesson and one we will use in March and later in New Orleans.

We lost a road game on 12/10. The world did not end. Last year we lost 7 road games in the SEC and we were dynamite in the NCAA. IU deserved to win. Let’s not hit the panic button. Jones had a bad game. No one knows the reason. He was fabulous in the NCAA last year and has been a very good player in all other games this year. Let’s cut him some slack. He may have been ill or distracted for some valid reason. We have beaten UNC and Kansas and will beat UL. We are likely to win the SEC and be a monster team come March. Coach Cal will make the necessary adjustments. He is a great game coach. Sorry we lost but it will not be the last time this year. We have great athletes and tremendous upside. By the way IU is a decent team with a great coach. Let’s give credit where it is due.

To offset the overreaction of negativity from a lot of fans, here are some positives of today’s game :
-mark it, Teague had the turning point of his career at UK in the 2nd half and played with courage and made big plays & shots
-Lamb missed the FT at the end but so what, he made tons of plays to help us come back and stay in it to the finish and is still a winner
-Miller displayed again in the 2nd half he is the assertive player and leader we hoped he would become. I am happy with his progression
-MKG is MKG, and we love having MKG on our team, he is a special player with a John Wall type will to win and make big plays
-while Davis was on the bench a lot, people overlook how many inhuman rebounds he had in todays game
-we faced the perfect storm (on the road against a rabid crowd) of foul trouble, plain silly 3 pt shooting from an opponent, meshed with bad FT & 3 pt shooting, & the worst officiating we will see all season (don’t care what is said, the refs were out to get us) and still could have won today
-this team no longer has to play with the pressure of being undefeated and have a lot to learn from and for Cal to teach with
-the team still showed it was resilient and has the courage to come back when we are down
-Eloy wasn’t great but had some decent minutes which will be the key to how far this team goes in March…. can’t emphasize that enough
-Terrence Jones off performance gives him incentive just to work harder which I am confident will happen and he will continue to be great, I hope the fans will get off his back, he’s been a big reason we won several games thus far this year, including against UNC

Summary: it hurts to lose period if you are a UK fan…. all the time and certainly to Indiana but they earned it today. UKs team didn’t come out and promise us an undefeated season. Losses are to learn from and that is what this will be. I hope all the fans have a sip of bourbon, take a deep breath and remember that we have a team full of unselfish, hard working, gutty, talented players and we are lucky to have them and Coach Cal. We have a shot at the National Championship this year and that realistic shot is unchanged by today. Get behind this team again and be glad we don’t have Tubby running this program into the ground anymore. Be thankful Coach Cal has put of back on the map, because he has. And one more thing, who cares what we are ranked this week and no one should care a bit who is ranked number one this week. It has nothing to do with our overall goal this year. Lets regroup get some wins and be ready to beat Louisville in a few weeks. Go CATS!

For the 1st time I can confidently say that I witnessed where Cal “doesn’t get it”

    1. Begin Games: Miller should start, Lamb at point, Teague on bench
    2. End Games: Lamb, Miller, MKG, Jones, Davis
…..Davis nor Teague should touch the ball within the final 1 minute if it’s close, since every team from now on will try to foul them.
    3. Out of conference games you don’t play with are Louisville, UNC, or Indiana.

Watch the reply of tonights game and you will see when it was near the end and the ball was passed to Teague, the Indiana players tried to foul him.

Cal needs to be taken to the classroom on this. Even those who get it 98% of the time still have something to learn from people who were here long before him. Respect traditions and respect the BBN.

Stop seeing what you want to see and realize what is going on out on the court. Yes, Miller had a few good moments. Then he had two moments that directly lead to the loss. One time on defense he let his man get wide open after the guard drove the ball and Darius had no clue where the ball was. Then, after Teague failed to foul, Disappearius had a couple of chances to foul and he did nothing.

Disappearius has lost his shooting touch and is having a rather pathetic senior season. Some people just aren’t leaders and Disappearius is one of them.

ive never seen a coach leave his players out to dry like calipari does sometimes. dont get me wrong he’s a great coach but that rebound with 19 secs to go, just call a timeout. set up an inbounds play to a guy who can actually make a free throw instead of throwing davis out there who wasnt in the game at all and everyone knew he was going to miss that free throw. Also, why arent you pressing at the end there? you had a couple fouls to give yet we let the pg run up to half court w.o being contested. Jones is non existent, he should just buy a house in lexington cause he is nowhere near nba potential at this point, if you told me tomorrow he has ADD, id believe it, he looked like a world beater against unc, then against a team clearly lacking in overall athleticism he just decides to check out. unfreakinbelievable. i will say the one good that comes out of this game is that it knocks UK down a peg or two. Hopefully, Hopefully, it will make these guys see that you need to start quick and put teams away when you have to. Only 9 games in, but if this is a trend, they will be just like the 09′ team which in retrospect underachieved for a lot of the same reasons we lost to IU today.

Get over yourselves and realize that this loss is a learning experience for a young team. Yes, we need to hit free throws. No, Cal does not tell Wiltjer not to shoot (the camera cut to him during the game staring Wiltjer down making a shooting motion, telling him to shoot it!). Yes, our best players either didn’t show up, got in foul trouble, or only played one half. BUT we have so much potential and come March we’ll be a better team for it. Some UK fans are ridiculous and give the rest of us a bad name. We lost to a team that had an unbelievable home court advantage, wanted/needed this game much more than us, and played one hell of a game. Our freshman went to one of the most hostile environments in college basketball, in their first road game, and really played well. Teague in the second half was great. This will hopefully be a glimpse of great things to come for him the rest of the season. Anthony Davis needs to get tougher. We need to shoot free throws better. Jones didn’t show up. But all and all, its just one game. We will be great by March. Three Goggles……….peace out

Ha….enough with the talk of IU shooting out of their minds….that was by far the worst shooting performance of the season…and that was entirely the result of UK’s length and athleticism. You have to realize that this is a team that can flat shoot. They are not nearly the the size and quickness of your guys, with the exception of maybe 2 player. IU only went 7 deep tonight, as Derek Elston was out with a back injury….you guys have complained about the refs, your players, your coach, and everything in between.

From now on perhaps take a cue from IU fans that know something about the kids that you recruit. IU people in the know were negative on M. Teague for well over a year prior to his commitment. He’s not a leader, he’s not a shooter, he’s not even much of a passer….he has speed and that’s it…and he’s a headcase. But we knew that about 24 months ago.

That was nothing but a trap game where we didn’t get any calls and to our credit we still should have won in the end. It seemed like a Vandy game to me. We had nothing to win and everything to lose this game especially recruiting. IU should not be given the opportunity to rebuild at our expense and UK should END this series NOW.

I’m not saying it was great, but w/ a couple of minutes to go, Indiana had 8 fouls and Kentucky only had 4. Kentucky is/was number one, and they didn’t get it done b/c they missed free throws and didn’t execute at the end. I know you didn’t make officiating the focus of your article, but you sissily added little quips about it as if to give the Cats an excuse. We don’t need excuses. We need Jones to sack up and play. We need Lamb to hit a free throw. No excuses if you are a wild cat (even if you try to hide your excuses in parentheses).

    People need to relax

Yes we lost yes it sucks but there is no reason to be throwing kids under the bus. They’re young kids. They will learn from this and become that much better. Some of these comments embarrass me as a UK fan. The season is long for a reason because it allows the young kids to grow up. There are some positives though.

    1. We fought back from being down on the road to a team that was absolutely on fire from three. They hit a three everytime we got close, yet we still showed enough toughness to stay in the game.
    2. Teague’s second half was damn good. He showed poise, confidence and a will to win. Hopefully this turned the corner for him a bit. He even pulled Miller away from a ref late in the game.
    3. MKG is big time. He is everything we need him to be.

    1. Free throw shooting. Some of this can be attributed to the kids being young and shook but Lamb shouldnt miss that free throw. Regardless they should be made. Its a lack of focus.
    2. Jones didnt show up but you can’t tear him up over this you have no idea what he could be going through. And it is not Cal’s responsibility to release that information to us anyway. Yes UK’s fanbase is the most involved but if Cal deems it not necessary for the public to know then that’s his call. And if there wasn’t anything wrong with Jones then he has just got to put this one behind him.

And don’t hate on Cal that’s just ignorant because what he does with these teams is simply amazing.
First true road tes was rough but we will get better. We get to lace them up another day.
A championship is still very likely.

Darius Miller is the biggest waste of potential in the history of UK basketball. He has the physical ability to be an NBA lottery pick, and the mental toughness and heart to be on an NBA dance team. Not only is he not a team leader as a senior, but continuously shrinks away from big plays when needed. Yeah, some other guys had bad games, but Miller should be the one constant on this team with his experience and talent. Unfortunately, he just does not have the heart, toughness, or intelligence. He was the one that should have fouled on that last play…came right to his lap. STUPID

i love how people say cal cant coach, he runs no plays, etc. etc. maybe your opinion of his coaching isnt held with the highest regard, but to say he runs NO plays, or does NO coaching? that is simply an extreme exaggeration.

1)in my opinion he is a pretty decent coach. his team always plays better after halftime, so he must be making some adjustments, either him or an assistant.

    2) i see set plays all the time. they seem to be a great help to start the offense, then the players can choose which play to make. kinda like those books were you choose your own ending.

3)the defense is (most of the time) pretty solid unless the players lapse. must have been taught to them by somebody. have you ever watched streetball? or a high school game for that matter?

4)in reference to point #1: whether it is cal or an assistant who handles most of the x’s and o’s is not important. as a coach, it is your job to coach (duh) maybe we need a better definition of what a coach does. does a college basketball coach draw up plays and teach the players how to run them? or does a coach recruit, assemble a very capable staff, properly handle pr, and send the best players possible out on the court with the best chance of winning? if that is the case, i would say calipari is a great coach.

    5) lack of free throw performance remains questionable at best. one would assume after years of horrible free throw shooting, any respectable coach would find a way to handle the problem. as the kids type these days, SMH.

6)hows that for thorough, mr whoever did that one post the other day about message posting tips?

    7) that is all

If we don’t learn how to shoot free throws & learn how to guard the 3, we can forget about winning any championship. These kids need to be practicing shooting free throws after practice until they can’t see straight. Instead of being on Twitter, they need to be sweating in the gym. None of these kids are fundamentally or mentally ready for the NBA !! Jones had a total & complete meltdown ! It’s a sad state when the other team thinks you’re such a non threat that they treat a player like Teague the way IU treated Teague. These kids had a meltdown today, it was good for them to get knocked upside the head because they defiantly & obviously needed it.

Outside of Kidd-Gilchrist everyone decided to stay home. It took Teague and Miller second half to figure out we are playing Indiana. Jones decided to quit on his team. I saw absolutely no movement offensively by the Cats on the floor. Lamb was the only guy in motion. It seems like we do not have any SET plays. I don’t think this team is going to free-style its way to a win a national championship. We also did not learn anything from our last close game versus UNC in letting them shoot 60% from beyond the arc. I would think that would have been addressed and fixed before this game. If Hoosiers shoot 45% from the 3 we still have a shot but I am not sure when we are going to figure out you have to guard the perimeter. After made free-throw Cal should have taken a time out to remind his guys whatever happens DO NOT give up three. I am not sure why we were so reluctant to guard the deuce which would have only tied the game, while three would have been a nail in the coffin. It was a close game and if everyone gave 100% effort like MKG then you can just say IU earned it but when when a player just don’t show up in a game like this that simply should not be acceptable. I blame players and coaches for not getting ready for this game that they had one whole week to prepare.

Ten minutes outside of Bloomington, in any direction, whether it be to the West in beautiful Brown County, to the South in Lawrence County / Bedford, to the East near Elletsville or Spencer (gulp!), or to the North in KKK country Martinsville, and you’ll run into people who would feel right at home in the mountains of Eastern KY, or the hills of Western KY. I’m glad we are not #1 on monday. I hate to lose, but losing an early season game (like we always do) wakes the team up. I hope we lose a couple more games before tournament time just to keep these kids grounded. Think of it-they are just kids-if they never lose, then they think they can’t lose, and will play accordingly come tourney time.

But to me there is one question I’d like Cal to address….With 5.6 seconds to go, Lamb shooting free throws and two fouls to give, why did he have everyone at half court? Why not keep two players on the lane to a) possibly get a missed FT b) cause a battle for a miss that eats time c) if the FT is made apply some time eating pressure in the back court d) be able to use one of the fouls more easily? I hope one of the media will ask him this question.

They should not be allowed to leave practice until they have made a hundred. Jones had a bad game or crumbled under the pressure. Where is the leadership he proclaimed he had? I’m sure they will come back strong. Oh BBN (KSR) what was with the “IU, who?” all week it’s like we forgot about how storied of a program IU is and how basketball crazed their fans are.. Backing up ???, he is right. We are going to be fine. Listening to you all bitch and moan about this one game and trash Jones and Cal after one loss is the only negative that makes me not 100% proud to be part of the BBN all the time. When Jones came out in Midnight Madness you were ready for to christen him the next Issel, Givens, Mashburn, etc. Now, he doesn’t show up in a big game and he is a stupid thug that should have left for the NBA. Grow up. We got beat in a hostile environment that we won’t see again the rest of the year. Yes, Vandy is quirky, and FL will be tough but nothing will match the hostility we saw yesterday. On top of that, they played a good game, made tough shots, stuck to their game plan and beat us by one. It was in their gym and we played like crap essentially w/out our two best players. It’s terrible to lose and even more so since we had to listen to IU mouth starting all the way back in the summer with Crean’s tweet. It happens. Last year, we all gave up hope late in the year because of our road woes and happened? Cal finally got it right, our execution improved, we saw what we needed to do and made the final four. This year, I’ve thought all along that we might need a loss to really wake us up and make us realize that we can’t do it on talent alone, turning it on and off as we please. Well, we got that loss, they have that bitter taste in their mouth and won’t want to repeat it. And it couldn’t have happened at a better time b/c Cal’s teams always improve most over Christmas break. Our defense improves 10 fold (which is downright scary when you look at how good it can already be at times w/out even knowing how to play) and our offensive flow and execution will improve as well. We will probably end up losing 2-4 more games from here on out. Get used to, teams don’t go undefeated anymore. But, we are going to get things right and come tournament times, I guaran-damn-tee that almost everyone will fear us. You have such an inflated opinion of what this team should be now that you aren’t giving them time to grow. Sit back and enjoy the ride b/c it is going to be a hell of a season. Be upset we lost but don’t bash Jones, who came back specifically to win a title, b/c he has a bad game. Instead rally behind him and pick him up. Let him know you still got his back and we will ream IU if we get them in the tourney. Now, let’s look forward to UT-Chattanooga and give them a beat down the likes of which they’ve never seen for finally the sleeping giant will be completely awoken. GO BBN!

Maybe he should have spent last week coaching the team, and not sounding off at the fans on something HE BROUGHT UP ON HIS WEBSITE. Cal, this week, instead of wasting time telling us what we think doesn’t matter, spend some time teaching them how to shoot a stinking free throw!!! Know why they a call it a “free throw”? What is wrong with everyone? They’re kids! They’re learning! Yes, Jones didn’t put 100% into the game, but he’s human and that happens. You should be PROUD of MKG and Lamb. Those two guys came out and played like men and carried the team. Teague played great for 19.55 of the 2nd half and made a young mistake on giving up on the final play, but again, he’s young. He’ll learn. Not everyone is going to be John Wall.

Coach Cal is doing his thing and kids need to learn how to be great. This is a great teaching tool that will make the players great. They’re going to learn from this and they’re going to be better. If they don’t lose this game, they probably lose one to an incredibly inferior team which would be far, far worse and remind you of the Gillispie days. This is one that the team took on the chin but it’s not, in any way, a bad loss.

The sky isn’t falling, there is no reason to call for anyone to be benched or to lose faith in Coach Cal. They may have lost the game but they’re surely not the classless teams like Xavier and Cinncy showed themselves to be. They lost with dignity and walked off the court with their heads held high. I’m proud of them either way.

Reasons for not trying to play.

I remember last year when Vargas lost a member of his family. His first game back he looked like any of us would and I felt terrible for him. Energy was misplaced, quiet, etc…

So…TJ, if it’s not something like that, what was it? It’s one thing to have a low scoring game. But 1 board & completely lifeless is whats blowing many of our minds. If it is personal, just say that. Point being….there has to be something significant a logical person would think to see a no-show performance from a pre season all american.

The longer a reason is not given…the more you will lose support from long time UK fans.

Thanks to #127 and #192 (among a few others) to provide a voice of reason crying out in the desert of trolls and whiners. Yes, we lost to a rival with less talent, but back up and think about the players IU had on their team. A lot of those kids are as athletically gifted as most of our players. Nowadays, those kids have been playing AAU ball for years and have had specialized training regimens to make them so much better than the “also rans” of years past. You can take the dunk by a relatively unheralded IU player as Exhibit A to this. You add in some good coaching, experience, and a turbocharged environment at home, and a team like this can do some amazing things. Congratulations to IU for playing a great game!

That being said, I am proud for the way the Cats battled back in an environment that would have tested any of the top 5 teams in the country. We essentially played most of the game with two of our best inside players totally ineffective – look what happened to OSU in the same circumstance. I think UK would have been in worse situation to actually win a game like that, because then the lesson might have been lost on the kids. Maybe no loss is a “good loss”, but this comes as close as it can get. And how lucky are we as fans to get to see our team involved in epic, amazing BB games two weekends in a row. You can’t win them all – and at this point in the season, they are optional wins. Let’s hope the kids learn from this loss (I think they will), and step up to that FF line in practice guys, and shoot until you can do it purely on muscle memory. GO CATS!

See, I think of it the other way. IU goes 60% from 3 point range making 9-15 and gets some questionable calls in the first half to go along with UK playing terribly and T. Jones being a no show. In the end the game still comes down to UK missing free throws the freshmen not fouling and a miracle buzzer-beater for them to escape with a win at home when they literally went all in for this game. This is a classic case of UK losing more than IU winning. Outside of the 3 point shooting and the refs, yet again, protecting a Zeller I don’t think IU deserved to win.

If you can’t win the game or at least go into overtime with few ticks to go then what chances do we have of winning when we are down 2 or three points with few ticks to go. I believe both coaches and players mentally broke down. Darius Miller’s day was a story of two halves.

-So absolutely shoddy defense for an entire game is Darius playing good in the 2nd half. Miller was the reason, along with Jones and bad FT shooting, that UK lost the game. It’s that simple because the game tape doesn’t lie. When a senior who is told to foul and doesn’t because he has no clue what the hell is going, that’s bad.

Indiana got several calls to go there way? Are you serious? Wipe the tears off your face because you obviously were only watching 1 side of the game. Second half do you realize how many normally-would-be-calls were not called in Indiana’s favor? That game was almost given to Kentucky based on the final 10 minutes how the refs performed. And the cries about them not calling a foul on the last shot–Are you serious? Firstly, he didn’t foul. Secondly, how about instead of relying on fouling him, you just play defense for 5.6 seconds…I’m not siding with either team but Kentucky played horribly, I think the refs could have done a much more even calling job (Both teams got robbed at times by the refs) and the fact is, Indiana stepped up and beat a team (Or maybe coach) that is obviously crumbling under the pressure. The barely held on again against UNC, 4 ranks lower than them and then lost to an unranked team that has been built honestly from the ground up.
