Cats commit to 2017 16-team Nike mega event

Most people get a card for their birthday…Phil Knight is getting two basketball tournaments.

Need a reason to be excited about the 2017 basketball season? Well, get ready, because ESPN just announced plans for a 16-team two-tournament event in honor of Nike co-founder Phil Knight’s 80th birthday. The event will take place in Portland, Oregon in November 2017 and include all of the major Nike schools:

Kentucky
Michigan State
Duke
North Carolina
Florida
Ohio State
Connecticut
Georgetown
Texas
Oklahoma
Stanford
Oregon
Xavier
Butler
Gonzaga
Portland

NCAA rules prohibit teams from the same conference playing in the same event, so the event will be broken into two eight-team tournaments. Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis is responsible for organizing the event, which he says is his and other athletic directors’ way of saying thanks to Phil Knight and Nike. The logistics of the tournament are still being worked out, but games will take place at the Rose Garden and Veterans Memorial Coliseum over a four-day period.

Who’s coming with me? I hear Portland is lovely in November.

just to clarify in case you don’t wanna read the article – there will be 2 separate tournaments of 8 teams because of a rule not allowing you to play another team in your own conference … so they can only pick 2 teams from each conference and have to split them up

I was in Portland at the very end of last October, and it was cold and rainy the whole time. Not nice. But maybe thats just normal.

Hey guys, that should be right about when UNC’s post-season ban ends and they have something to look forward to.

Also, odds are Calhoun will be long gone, if not Roy. Coach K could even retire by then. That also gives plenty of NBA teams a chance to try to woo Cal unsuccessfully, and it’s also plenty of time for Bill D to accept a job or 2 and back out.

I love my cats, but I’m pretty sure UL didn’t get invited because they are adidas. Just a thought.

10-UL is an Addidas affiliate, they wouldn’t be invited to a Nike event. Bad choice for them.

Seriously, they have a tournament scheduled 5 years in advance? I’ll be there…assuming I still live in Oregon.

I wonder what could happen to that field if there is any conference realignment. For instance, if Texas would move to the PAC-12, do they drop out? You would keep them from a marketing standpoint. So what would you do with Stanford and Oregon? A lot can happen between now and 2017.
