Cats 22 in Coaches’ poll, unranked in AP poll

Obviously the Cats’ wins over Samford and Portland didn’t impress the AP voters. For the second week in a row, Kentucky did not make the AP top 25, coming in at 28th behind Oregon and Pittsburgh.

The Cats also fell to 22nd in the USA Today Coaches’ poll, down three spots from last week.

Indiana, Duke and Louisville ranked 1st, 2nd, and 6th in both polls.

Don’t call it a comeback?

Is anyone surprised? Why would beating Samford and Portland impress the voters enough to put us in the top 25? I don’t know if we’re top 50 or not. I will say this, I think on any given night, there are probably 50 teams that could beat us right now.I don’t mean to be so negative but we have a really long way to go.

I still say on any given night in March this team will be able to beat any other team in the country. It will be a lot like Cal’s second year if we make it to the final four. That team could have lost to Princeton, but ended up going to the final four. They could beat any team, but they could also lose to any team.

I bet my friend that is an IU fan that Kentucky will make it farther in the tournament than IU does. He gave me 10 to 1 odds. What a smart person lol. If IU goes further I have to give him 100 bucks if Kentucky goes further he has to give me 1000.

Cal’s last team at Memphis lost 3 games early, dropped out of the Top 25 and then went on a run not losing again until the Sweet 16. I don’t think we’ll make it through the rest of the regular season and conference tourney unscathed, but I can see a similar fate for this team.

Yea yeah polls are no big deal- meaningless = blah blah! Still does not explain why we dropped 3 spots with 2 W’s (in both polls same drop I think). Yea I am surprised- makes no sense and is actually mildly irritating to me. With that said- yeah- we are about where we should be and that part of it is NOT surprising.

I love a woman that can quote James Todd Smith. We will be a team that no one wants to play in March. The talent/experience bar is tilted a little too much to the talent side this year, but that’s not a problem to get on the ledge about. We’re playing with house money this year, just won it all and have a legendary class brewing for next year. Let’s kick back and laugh at Louisville. At least that’s my favorite pasttime.

What I cannot believe is that the mock drafts still have Noel as the top pick and Poythree and Goodwin going in the top 10. If they have played this well to impress the scouts that much we should be undefeated. Why would any top player not come to UK. No matter how poorly you play your stock never drops.

  20. Poythress < 10 Rebounds Per Game
    6:27 pm December 10, 2012 Permalink

Chris – I’m certain Poythress needs for someone to defend him. You must have been too.

Unfortunately for the excuse you’ve given, it’s not valid. Noel & Cauley are rarely in the lineup together (less than 5 minutes per game on average). Also, when Cal plays them together, that’s when Poythress is on the bench.

Go watch the film if you don’t know your ass from a hole in the ground. Poythress is in the game with 1 center at any given time.

I can’t imagine these ladies are unranked. Noel & Goodwin are scrapping. Harrow finally appeared last game. Cauley-Stein dives on the floor for loose balls. Mays will give a consistent effort.

Now Poythress is the low man on the todem pole on an unranked Kentucky team.

Keep defending mediocrity and someone might confuse you of being a Kentucky football fan.

  21. Chris
    6:31 pm December 10, 2012 Permalink

    20. My point is that there is always a 7 footer on the court with him. Which makes it hard for the SF to get rebounds. It is obvious you don’t know basketball because 7 boards a game is pretty good from the SF position. Poythress will for sure be a top five pick in the draft and I have been saying all season he might be number one. Now the scouts are beginning to say the same thing.

    Kentucky is 84th in RPI.
0-1 against top 50 teams in RPI
1-3 against top 100 teams in RPI

Decided underdogs against Louisville and at Florida. That leaves only two games – at home against Fla., and vs. Missouri to significantly improve their RPI.

I would not rank this bunch in the top 25 right now. They don’t deserve much of a ranking although Pomeroy still had them at 13 yesterday. This team has done nothing except beat Maryland in the first game of the season. They can’t defend the perimeter. They can’t hit from the charity stripe and they can’t rebound with Lou Holtz. They still don’t play for each other. Maybe by March.

Usually Valid Answer: Play for Kentucky

Terrence Jones averaged more rebounds a game in the same position as a Sophmore with Anthony Davis & MKG on the same team (and they actually played most of the time together). That’s real.

Chris, your statement in post #13 was false. Everyone knows if Noel & Cauly are in the lineup together it’s when Poythress is resting.

Poythress averages half the assists as Jones.
Poythress averages 1/5 the amount of steals as Jones.
Poythress averages more than half the blocks as Jones.
Poythress averages twice the turnovers as Jones.

Both are miserable free throw shooters (Mid 60%)
Both averaged 29 minutes per game.

    UK = Unranked
    Chris = Uneducated

Terrence Jones was the 18th pick in the 2012 NBA draft. That is not in the lottery (only top 14).

Jones was also on a RANKED UK team that won the National Championship.

Poythress and Jones dont play the same position. Poythress plays the same position as MKG. He averages .6 rebounds fewer than MKG and 6 points per game more and he is shooting 17% hire from the field. This means that by your logic Poythress is a better player than MKG.

  38. How Soft? Poythress Soft
    8:23 pm December 10, 2012 Permalink

Gerald Fitch averaged 5.4 rebounds his soph year as a 6 foot 3 – 188 lb guard.

I guess Poythress is on the perimeter more than Fitch was.

Also, if your suggesting that UK’s lineup this season is normal with the great white disappearing act (Wiltjer) on defense as a typical 4 defender then your crazy.

Cal will put Poythress on the 4 of every team we play defensively, and offensively Wiljer hangs on the perimeter to lure out big men while letting Poythress play more inside.

The only guy Poythress has to be concerned about getting rebounds is himself.

Expecting Poythress to get 10 boards a game is pretty ridiculous. Anthony Davis had 10.4 a game last year. Before that you have to go back to Kenny Walker in 1985 to find a UK player who averaged 10. There were some pretty damn good players who came through here in those 26-27 years and never averaged 10 a game.

Cal is not putting Poythress on the 4’s of any team that has a 3 that isn’t in a coma. Kyle Wiltjer can’t guard any any mobile 3’s. Did you see Poythress play Ryan Kelly when we played Duke? Absolutely not when Wiltjer was on the floor. Poythress has been playing a lot of wing against the zones. I’m not sure what games some people are watching.

Yea? How about just go back 2 years… Demarcus Cousins – 10 rebounds per game

And last year… MKG (7.4) & Terrence Jones (8.9) would have averaged close to 10 rebounds per game if not sharing the court with one of the greatest team in the history of college basketball.

So in 3 years, I just gave you 1 (& 2 likely). You can go back to 1985 to find your glasses.

Chris is saying Poythress is living up to the “NBA draft” websites current rankings of him.

    This is nonesense.

Poythress better be on the 2 – 4 year plan playing like this (and that’s fine if it’s what he wants). I just don’t think he knows. Many UK fans are caught up in this “all Cal recruits are 1 and dones” and it’s just not so (nor should it be).

Lamb & Jones stayed a 2nd year (because they needed to). What Poythress might not get is his season is already being counted. You can’t just turn it on half way through and expect to be a lottery pick.

Terrence Jones was a top 5 draft pick this time in his freshman year. Look at how that ended up.
