Cards fans turning up the heat on Pitino

It’s not a stretch to say that Rick Pitino’s tenure as the coach at the University of Louisville hasn’t lived up to expectations.  In his tenth season as the head man for the Dirty Birds, Pitino has taken the team to one Final Four, but only advanced past the NCAA Tournament’s first weekend three times.  The players don’t seem to be developing.  The top recruits haven’t been coming as often as expected.  Essentially, he’s not the UK version of Rick Pitino that Cards fans believed they had finally landed back in 2001. And with Calipari controlling the state, there’s a good chance that he’ll never fulfill the hopes of Cardinal Nation City Borough.

However, the heat in the chicken fryer seems to be amped up a bit these days.  After another loss to Kentucky, who, by the way, has beaten him in the last five non-Gillispie games, the fans seem to be again getting a little irritable.  As you might have heard on this morning’s Kentucky Sports Radio show, they started putting the coach on the spot last night on his radio show and Pitino fumbled a bit on the second critical call, stumbling with a “we beat But…umm” and then ending with “Kentucky was the better team”.  Matt talked about it for a good bit on the show and the podcast is coming soon, but here’s a clip from “Ethan”, who summarized a building list of frustrations. (Quality will be better on the podcast, which will be here shortly.)

HUGE UK fan here, but Cardinal Nation is a joke, always has been. BUT…Pitino has a very good recruiting class coming in next year, and 2012 is looking like the 1 class (until Cal gets a few onboard). The point is, Cardinal fans do ont want to admit it, but Pitino came to Louisville to retire, and he’s not going to admit it but he pulled a Tubby. He let recruiting go, and lost the fir, then he got so tied up (behind the scenes) with the Sypher thing he actually let UL BBall go.

Two years ago Duke fans were asking if “we are a has been program”, and if Coach K had “let the game pass him by”. Coach K got one good class, wins the NC, and now has the #2 class next year.

The point is Pitino will never be what he was at UK, but for UK fans to think he is down and out, I wouldnt bet on it. We all know Pitino is one of the best coaches in America, he simply has not had ANY real talent. When Pitino gets real talent, he WILL BE hard to beat.

Loserville fans have a right to be upset. Truth is, Pitino is no doubt looking for an escape hatch to the hell he has created for himself. If he can’t find a face-saving job elsewhere, I wouldn’t put it past him to retire for health reasons. Syphillis does tend to wear one down.

17 – I tend to agree with you. The worst case scenario: loses ton of BE games this year, knocked out first round BE tourney, NIT bound, all that may very well happen. But then next year with his loaded team, lets say he comes into Rupp and gets spanked by his rival again. THEN: he HAS to go DEEP in the BE and NCAA tourneys. If he blows it with that 2012 team, then I think there is at a minimum a ton of smoke, with possibly a little fire about his resignation.

The caller is right, ul shouldn’t have back to back bubble seasons and one final 4 year in 10 years is not comparable to what is demanded of coach K and Duke.

I actually think RP’s biggest problems are 1. he coaches at Lville, which, take away 4 years in the 80’s and you dont have alot, and 2. I think his biggest mistake is his assistants, good god, look what he had under him at UK, Tubby, donovan, Sendek, Jim OBrien (Pacers coach) etc… does he have now….Massiello for gods sake. He has done it to himself but goodness.

I thought Lupica’s musing about Pitino to be interesting. He apparently watched the UL/UK game. He thinks Pitino needs to get out of the state of Kentucky and start fresh with a big program like UCLA. He thinks Ben Howland is not going to last there and they will be looking for a big name big personality coach to match the history of the program. Pitino did enquire qbout that job when Lavin was let go. He further believes Pitino has a third act left in his career but it has to be a big job that will energize him. I personally agree with Pitino’s old friend Jersey Red that it was a career mistake for Rick to ever take the Louisville job. Rick thought he had enough good will in the State to coach UK’s rival without any fallout. Has not happened. The crowning achievements of his career came at UK and he has ruined his legacy. Jersey Red was the only one in his circle who told him not to take the Louisville job. Their friendship was affected and they have only recently become friendly again.

I love to seeing Looserville being mediocre each year but I have to admit that I don’t like what is going on with Pitino. Maybe his style of coaching has passed or his recruiting has just been down but I find it hard to hate the guy. He brought us some great years of UK basketball. He basically took us to 3 straight national championships games in a row along with almost taking a bunch of Kentucky boys(1992)to the top. I believe any UK fan would have to admit that it doesn’t get any better than the years he was here.

#17 and #22 – I do agree with you both that a Pitino DEMISE is exaggerated, but Rick has had plenty of talent to do more than what he has. He had a two year lull after the 2005 Final Four. Then in 2008, UofL lost to NC in the Elite 8, which was a back and forth game until Tyler Hansborough saved them with 5 minutes left. That year, the Cards were loaded with people like T-Will, D. Padgett, Earl Clark, Jerry Smith, Sosa, McGee, and two defensive stoppers in Knowles and Brandon Jenkins. Also, let’s not forget that turd Derick Caracter. Then the next year, they go back to the Elite 8 and get upset by Michigan St. That was basically the same team minus Jenkins and Padgett…insert Samuels and Jennings. Pitino simply got out-coached and out-classed by Izzo. Louisville has had the talent over the last 3-plus seasons…..their failures point more towards their coaches than their talent.

    29. I wish UK had one Final Four in 10 years. Im not saying he will win like Coach K at Duke, Im just saying he will get talent next year, and again in 2012. If he doenst put a competitive team with that, then yes he will move on, but he is gonna be here atleast 3 more years before we know.

The coach K thing was more about the fans saying “were done” and “Pitino has to go”, just like Duke fans did 2 years ago, now they are #1 in the country, defending NC and have the #2 class coming in. Im just saying to count Pitino out would be a mistake at this point. Personally I prey he never wins another game, but most UK fans on this site had written UK as a loss to UL THIS YEAR, then one game later we laugh at Cardinal Nation for melting down, but at the same time we now think the same thing.

Why can’t we just stick with “little brother”? It’s got history. It’s funny. And, it infuriates U of L fans. Or should I say, “little brother” fans.

On a similar note, since Louisville decided to give itself a nickname “the Ville”. I think we should call our selves, “the Tucky”.

    Flat Bills

    41. That is a very fair point. Pitino will never be what he was when he was here. Im just saying him being the total loser and being run out of Louisville is pre-mature (no pun intended). You said it best, UL is only two years removed from back to back Elite 8s and the #1 overall seed. He got tied up with Sypher, and let UL slide because of it. But they just built a new arena and UL now has a shoe sellsman running the recruiting game. Like it or not, Pitino will not go away quietly, hes way to arogant for that

It really is amazing to me how similar Pitino’s tenure at UofL has been to Tubby’s at UK. They both spend most of the early years underachieving, minus one very successful run in the tournament (UK: 98, UL: 05). Then, they manage to finally get together a couple of good teams that don’t an excessively large amounts of talent but play well together, but end in disapointing tourney runs (UK: 03-05, UL: back-to-back Elite 8s). Then they managed, after this success to get some good recruits (UK:05, UL: next two years). I’m pretty sure quite a few of us were saying that Tubby would have great teams once he got “real” talent, but that didn’t work out. Now we have to see how Pintino does with his opportunity. Interestingly similar, except that Tubby did noticibly better in almost every way (which says much about the two programs).

Pitino’s biggest problem is his ego. Remember right after we lost to Arizona in the championship game, rumors were flying and he even went to talk to a recruit in the northeast that he wasn’t going anywhere. Then the Boston job came open and BOOM he was gone. I remember him telling folks on his call-in show he tells all of his players NOT to believe what they readin the papers or what they hear from sportscasters and fans alike…..Guess what? He DID!

For someone to say we shouldn’t be hard on him because he went to coach Little Bro is totally inept. For him to coach UL, our instate rivil is like Knight going to purdue from IU….or Dean Smith coaching dook. He should have went far away somewhere to get back into college game…IMHO

  58. dan

You guys have made alot of valid points but think back to when Pitino was coaching at UK and how much talent he had to have to win, not to mention the talent he surrounded himself with for assistant coaches….Now for whatever reason whether it was to stick it to the Kentucky fanbase or he really just wanted to come back to the state of Kentucky he’s been a much different coach than he was at Kentucky. Not nearly as driven to win I mean. Maybe he took a more relaxed approach to coaching? IDK…but even with the talent he has coming in over the next few years(if it holds up they’re not there yet)look at Chandler and Teague….one chose UK over UL and the other dropped to the bottom of the rankings for his class…I still think he’s done. He’ll stay at UL for a few more years and then hang it up but he won’t win anymore national titles. He’s not the same Rick Pitino and he certainly won’t have the amount of talent at UL that he put together at Kentucky. No way.

If he loses that game, I think the heat really gets turned up and I would not be surprised if he steps down after the season. Its simple, Slick rick was at the right place at the right time. He still cant make adjustments during the game.Nothing has changed, just no mashburn this time.

15 Second Rick hasn’t got his mind in the game. If I had cheated on my wife, gave the woman that I cheated with $3500.00 to abort our baby and who knows what else, then I know I would be having a bad day-week-month. Rick had his hand in Bledsoe’s grades turning up in the Times because his son, Richard, is an assistant coach at Florida and they had copies of the grades. He thought this would cause problems for Coach Cal and KY
