For reasons that are somewhat baffling, there seems to be a panic that has overtaken UK land. Even though the status of Kentucky’s program has done a complete 180 while the folks down the road live in Extortion land, some Kentucky fans have taken one piece of bad news to determine that the sky is falling in Lexington. If as expected, Xavier Henry commits tomorrow to Kansas, things will be fine. Now unlike many folks, I am not going to act as if losing the #8 player in the country isnt important, but in the grand scheme of things, it will be a blip on the radar. The big prize, John Wall, is still out there and UK will have a good to very good team coming back next year no matter what.
But lets say the worst happens…lets say that Meeks and Patterson go to the Draft and John Wall goes to Duke. While that will have a dramatic effect on next season, in the grand scheme of things the result will be the same. Kentucky basketball WILL take off under John Calipari. It just will. The 2010 class will be a monster and after that, the best players in the country will end up in the Bluegrass. I was told recently by a guy who covers recruiting full time, “Kentucky will by next year get whoever they want, whenever they want.” Read that again and digest. The time is coming and it will be glorious.
Now none of that means we dont want Wall or we dont need Pat and Jodie back. Those three guys can mean a Final Four, something this program wants desperately. But long term, take a deep breath. Calipari will tear it up at UK….if not now, very soon….and your worries will go away.
