Calling a cross sport audible

Not good, son

Some interesting news surfaced this week regarding the transfer of Demetri Goodson, a junior point guard at Gonzaga, to Baylor where he would be focusing on football instead of basketball. Goodson is the younger brother of Mike Goodson, a running back for the Carolina Panthers, and hasn’t played organized football since his sophomore year in high school. His decision is fueled by the fact that he has been told his best chance to go pro may be through the NFL rather than the NBA. Goodson will play cornerback for the Bears and has two years of eligibility remaining.

My question to you is this: if you could have had any of the modern era UK basketball players also suit up for the football team, who would it have been? I know that the common answers might be Michael Porter because of his high profile offer from USC or Chuck Hayes because of the comparisons that could be made between him and San Diego Chargers All-Pro tight end, Antonio Gates, but beyond that who do you think could have been a good fit on the gridiron?

Personally, I think it would have been interesting to see Eric Bledsoe on the football field. His combination of speed, quickness, strength, balance and pure athleticism would have been frightening.

Assuming their basketball career wouldn’t be affected in any way, which former or current players could have made the best transition?

And i’m pretty sure that if Demarcus Cousins played football, it would automatically be game over for the other team. Darius Miller would make for a lanky Wide Reciever.

Cliff Hawkins-Cornerback…Sick speed, agility, athletic, and good hands. All vital components for one to excel in that particular position. Also, anyone who has played for us with a good build, jumping ability, and speed. Such as: ANYONE WHO HAS PLAYED UNDER CAL, could probably somewhat succeed at the wideout spot. I also would like to see Saul Smith at slot get smashed going across the middle. Just saying. 🙂

Wall would have been a nasty WR. Bledsoe would just be a nightmare at RB. Somebody like Azubuike playing defense would just be nasty as well. His size and speed would hurt. I see someone put Desmond Allison though, I’m assuming cuz they saw where he did go on to play football…and apparently pretty well at that. What was Porter in high school? I still think people were too hard on Porter. No he wasnt UK caliber, but he tried like hell. Not his fault Billy G ran off Derrick Jasper and Porter had to take over pg duties. Either way, there would be several pretty crazy to see on the field.

65 – Cam Newton-esque? Not a chance. The first comparison with Wall I would make would be Vick. Run around the field and use his quickness to make something happen. I will have to agree with everyone else that Azubuike would have been a beast on the field. How about putting him at OLB? He’s quick enough for some pass coverage, but solid enough to knock someones head off on a run.

I think Porter was recruited as a safety. No way he had the foot speed to be a corner. I would have liked to see Bledsoe as a DB. Sparks was an incredible soccer player growing up so give him a shot at kicker, Epps at receiver, James Lee whereever he wanted to play, Rondo and Wall at receiver.

  89. FakeDrVance
    9:45 am June 1, 2011 Permalink

82: Shagari couldn’t make it to the endzone before a qb sack, regardless of field position; plus he couldn’t catch a lob pass from 15ft with a round ball so a football is probably out of the question. He may however be able to block an extra point just by standing.

Can’t believe no one mentioned Heshimu Evans. He was fast, strong, and physical. At 6-6 would have been hard to stop and tough to take down after the catch.

Hawkins at cornerback would be interesting because he would be hard to shake but might never tackle anyone.

Of course Hayes or Patterson could have played TE. Cousins might be able to play some DE. Not sure he could take the punishment as well as he could give it out.
