Calipari’s post game quotes

John Calipari reacts to a technical foul called on his team’s bench (AP Photo)

Coach Calipari talked in the post-game about how well his young guys performed today against Tennessee. He said the team needs to be more physical and praised specifically the effort a few of his players gave. Take a look at what he had to say.

We got out-physicalled in the first half again. The same guys got pushed, shoved and couldn’t come up with the ball – and were accepting it. The thing we had was our young players had a will to win. The three (Michael Kidd-Gilchrist) makes, the shot Anthony (Davis) makes and the plays Marquis Teague made. Marquis Teague guarded; that’s the first game he’s guarded. He knew that kid (Trae Golden) was averaging 20 a game the last four games. So he went out and said, ‘You know what, I’m going to guard my man and I’m going to make this tough on him.’ And he did.

Coach Calipari nailed this one as the biggest problem the team has. Kentucky is still playing soft and letting inferior teams push them around. It’s been a consistent theme that the Cats are playing down to the level of their opponents when a blowout is in the cards. Terrence Jones seems to be a main culprit — judging by Calipari’s lack of mentioning and suggesting it’s the “young players” who stepped up. But Anthony Davis let guys post up and back him down today, and Darius Miller couldn’t create space inside the arc. It’s a team-wide issue that has to be changed mentally. Calipari said it’s a lack of pride.

Those three did it, and then Kyle (Wiltjer) came in. How about the five points he had? When you’re in a game like this and he makes that three and he makes those two free throws – he did what we needed him to do.

Kyle Wiltjer played only nine minutes, but had a big sequence of solid defense at one end, a block, working in the lane and picking up a foul. He also knocked down one of the two three-point shots the Cats hit. Wiltjer has so much upside it scares me.

So you think about Michael Gilchrist and what he did. I bet he didn’t know he had missed a few shots before he shot the three. All he knew was that ball was going down.

Kidd-Gilchrist made the second three of the game with five minutes remaining to put the Cats ahead by four and prompted Tennessee to call a full timeout. We in here.

P.S. North Carolina was smacked by Florida State earlier, losing 90-57. No, that isn’t a typo.

As a Kentucky native and Florida State alumnus, let me be the first to say: “Suck it, Vols and Tar Heels!” The Noles are usually good for a few ACC upsets each year, but this was domination.

Regarding the UK game, I definitely agree that we’re playing soft – particularly under the basket. Jones should be a beast down there. I kind of understand why Davis gets pushed around. He’s tall, but needs more weight if he’s going to hold his ground. Plus, the unibrow makes him top-heavy, and you need a low center of gravity.

    Finally, the refs sucked.

UT exceeding expectations and UK far from it. We get down by 8 points to a totally inferior team who had 1 less day to get ready for us. UT showed the effect at the end of the game and we had just enough to avoid an upset. As Cal says….we don’t have the pride to compete and win for the complete game. I was wondering if Lamb was rooming with Miller because he certainly has taken on his apathetic play. I think Miller is totally “clueless” as to how much money this will probably cost him down the road.

I can maybe understand Roy sending the rest of the people on the bench to the locker room. Maybe. But what message was he sending to those 5 guys on the court by abandoning them? He should be suspended.

Roy didn’t come up with the idea to take his players off the court. The FSU coach called the refs and Roy over and asked if it was alright.

Damn guys, get your facts straight before you criticize. A few years back Coach K was the one to take his players off the court, criticize him, he gave you reason to. Suspended? Really?

#11 – Even if it was Hamilton’s idea(which I doubt no matter how many people repeat that), Roy still had 5 guys on the floor and at least he should have stayed out there with them. If he was so worried about UNC’s safety he should have stayed and made sure those 5 guys got off the floor too.

Williams is the coach of his team, if he can’t protect his players he needs to give up coaching. And if the FSU coach can’t protect his visitors he needs to get out too.

Williams and Pitino are pitiful, can’t believe Roy took his team off the court cause the students were ging to storm it. Then Pitino because they won @home is being praised for apologizing for his stupid remarks to a CJ reporter, so you think if they had lost hhe would have even done a post game presser??

    17. Take a hike….every away game is in a hostile environment. This is the most talented team in the country almost losing to a team that has lost to Austin Peay, College of Charleston and others. We have got a few players that are drastically underperforming and if they don’t get it turned around soon we will continue to struggle and lose games that we shouldn’t.

Roy Williams admitted in his post game presser that it was his idea to take his team off the court. That was the most cowardly thing I have ever seen on a bball court. He would have made a terrible Marine, leave no man behind. What a shameful joke!!

Biggest problems I see is us getting pushed around inside (obvious in the rebounding margins and the number of times we get blocked), bad recognition on drives (resulting in charges), and our 3 returning players not stepping up offensively and making sure to have an impact. That’s why we’re not winning big in all these games. Our talent has easily made up for being down, but we can’t put anyone away.

Jones has played hard on defense, moreso than many seem to notice, but he’s our offensive banger. Without him, more and more has fallen on MKG, who has sometimes gotten in foul trouble.

Lamb is getting too many fouls. He already trails his man too often on defense. These two combined have kept him from getting in an offensive rhythm because they both get him a spot on the bench and he doesn’t get a chance to shoot.

Miller has disappeared again. Outside of the occasional 3, floater or well-timed lob to Davis, he’s been invisible too much. Sometimes he’s helping on D and the boards, but he has too good a skillset and size to not be scoring more than 4 points the last 2 games.

    4) Rivalry games and conference games are often wonky. Does anyone here really think FSU is 30 points better than UNC?

    7) Teams that foul us a lot, playing physical, are going to be a problem all year. Our two centers and 2nd power forward (Davis, Vargas and Wiltjer) are all lean and easily pushed around. That hurts us in fouls and boards, and as long as we have those problems, inferior teams will continue to hassle us.

I understand that Beckham and Polson are preferred walkons and that’s why they got open schollies, but after seeing a green Stokes play today, I really wish Poole had made his decision to transfer during the offseason and we’d had a schollie to offer Stokes. Maybe he still goes to UT for the playing time, but it would’ve been a huge get to have a big body like him to add to our rotation.

#11-Don’t get me wrong… I understand that players can get hurt when the other team rushes the court. But that’s when you tell your guys to huddle together because we know it’s going to happen… play together… protect together! You don’t leave half of your squad on the court to get stomped… #WRONG!

Not sure why everyone is suggesting that TJ is the one Calapari suggested was playing soft. TJ, while not spectacular played hard today IMO. The “soft” one was Darius. Regardless, it is obvious that the Freshman are much more aggressive and don’t back down nearly as easily as the upper classmen which is Cal’s point.

No one commenting on Wiltjer? If I were Cal I’d go ahead and get him as many minutes as I can. The kid can flat out score the basketball. He may be a little weak on defense right now but he can be coached up to help hide his weakness and Davis can make up for a lot of his mistakes. At least he is a threat to score. When we’re having trouble scoring, like we have the last two weeks, I’d like to see if Wiltjer can get it going.
