Calipari willing to play Indiana in Brookyln

During last night’s Indiana-North Carolina broadcast on ESPN, Dick Vitale said John Calipari sent him a text message saying he is willing to open the 2013-14 college basketball season against Indiana.  The catch?  Cal wants the game to be played in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn as part of a “V Foundation Classic.”

Indiana head coach Tom Crean was asked about the possibility of playing Kentucky again during his postgame press conference last night and he said, “I think that ship has sailed.”  Crean is only interested in a combination of home and home and neutral sites.

Are we really going through this again?

If I was Crean I would jump all over the opportunity to play Kentucky as EARLY as possible in the season like this. Why wouldn’t he? Would he really rather play UK a month into the season? Why do I drink my own urine? These are questions

Honestly….all streaks come to an end…to me they don’t matter as much as what is going on in the present. Sure streaks make new victories that much sweeter, but wouldn’t be devastating to end streaks.

I want to see this become a series, but I wish we could bring back UK-UNC or UK-DUKE more than UK-IU.

screw iu. the series didn’t have to end if not for crean not wanting to leave bloomington. playiing at indy would have meant more money for both schools, as would the game at the barclay. crean doesn’t want a regular series with UK because as long as cal is here he knows he’ll probably be on the short end.

Crean, IU and their fans can all suck it. They have a perfect storm this year with Zeller and Watford back at the same time they have some experienced seniors. Then, they add a good recruiting class that addresses their weakness- Depth in frontcourt and quickness at PG. All this in a down year for college basketball at the top of the rankings. We will absolutely DRUB them next year and the year after that if we see them in any forum.

This is laughable. When is Dick going to get it through his head that it was IU that pulled the plug and not Kentucky. Cal offered neutral site games in Indiana and Crean turned it down. Crean countered with home and home and Cal turned it down. Now that Cal offered again to play IU, Crean turns it down again. Dick, the ball is in Crean’s court not Cal’s. Crean doesn’t want to play away from home. He knows IU fans can’t travel like BBN and is scared it will always be a home game for the Cats. That’s why he wants the home and home. Crean is just mad that the series ended last season and he didn’t get a chance to take his veteran team to Rupp for a chance to beat a bunch of freshmen and break Cal’s home streak. Crean is acting like a child and should man up and play UK in Indy.

Cal’s PR savvy is ridiculous. He knew good and well Dickie V would bring it up on the air which would do one of two things. 1 – Shame Crean into accepting or; 2 – Make him look like the one who is obstructing the processes. Cal seems to never do anything without a purpose.

And don’t let last night’s beat down of UNC fool you. UNC is not good at all this year. They’ll lose a lot of games and flame out early in the tournament. Don’t get me wrong. IU is a good team but they’re not going to win the championship. They’re not as good as they look and they’re reaching their ceiling early much like Duke. UK is going to take some lumps this year but by February, we should be pretty good especially if Harrow can become the PG we need him to be.

Cal is just trying to goad/bully Crean and Indiana into it. Crean and IU are doing the right thing by sticking to the home/home and two neutral sites thing. Cal is trying to push the large venue, big stage games because he thinks it gives his NBA one-and-dones better visability and is a good recruiting tool.

IU wants to the home/home part of it because the IU students and season ticket holders matter. Can UK fans who buy season tix honestly say they are pleased with the home non-conference schedule this year? With no IU, the biggest home game is against a Baylor team who is 4-2, losing to Colorado and the College of Charleston. Probably makes you want to run out and buy season tix!!!

I think everyone who is saying that Crean has it right, doesn’t understand the business aspect of running an athletic department and making your program make money. Would you rather have a pay day every other year, which is going to be about 24,000 people, or split 40,000 every year? The only reason to want it on your home floor is to protect season ticket holders. But really if you can afford season tickets can’t you afford to buy seats to a neutral site? Also playing in the bigger arenas gets you ready for the tournament. Last time I checked they don’t play the final four in Ass Hall or Rupp. Why wouldn’t you want to put your team in the best position to win in March?

It is what it is, Indiana will not play any quality competition away from home. They obviously were going to play in a tournament at the beginning of the year, and they go to one where the toughest team they play is Gtown. They almost lost to them. I have nothing against the Hoosiers and love the way they play, but can’t give full credit to they beat a real opponent out of Bloomington. Which by the way will not be until February when they travel to Ohio State. It might make you look good, but you can’t play in your own gym come tourney time. Last night was just proof of it again when Crean pretty much turned down Calipari’s offer to play next year in a big and helpful event. Bet he would play it if it was in Bloomington. As an Indiana fan living in Louisville I love it when these two play, especially because it creates fun trash talk with all my UK fan friends and even my UK fan wife.

At the same time though; who cares? Both programs are in a great spot and look like they’ll stay in a good position for quite a while. As Indiana regains more prominence there will be just as much interest in putting them in games against Duke, Kansas, and other big names like UK is now. They both will play tough schedules. I wish they would play but there is no rule that they have to.

Honestly, I think a big factor is that Crean and Cal are good friends and don’t want to play each other. Crean doesn’t want to go to Rupp any more than Cal wants to go to Bloomington. I think they both know it would probably just be the home team wins every year.

I wish they would play, and I would rather play UK every year in Indy or NYC or Atlanta than not play them at all, at the same time though, it doesn’t matter. Crean and Cal are smart because they know all of this talk about the series keeps the attention solely on their programs. If they both really wanted to play, they would make it happen, they don’t. Who cares?

I have nothing but respect for what Cal has done at UK and he clearly has the right to do what he wants with his program as does Crean. It doesn’t matter who has the better reason not to play, they don’t have to play and so they choose not to. I wish the issue would be dropped but lately Dick Vitale won’t let it die.

I’d rather face off in late March or early April every year on a neutral court and see who comes out on top. I’m pretty confident UK fans feel the same.

It doesn’t benifit our players to play in that barn you call a gym. We got plenty of other teams that want to put our players on popcorn boxes, and make trophy cases in memory of. 72 We do realize the game would be away from Assy Hall this year. But we also realize that it would be at Assy Hall next year. Agreeing to play them at Rupp this year means we would have to go to that smelly high school gym next time, and our boys are too good for that. The logical argument for neutral (besides sparing our boys from the crap hole that is Assy Hall) is more money made for the program. Cal is a business man and he we don’t need IU’s business.

@59: Can someone explain how the Big 10 has 1 championship in 20+ years when they’re so great? Why not wait until after winning a championship ring, and not a sweet 16 ring to be so boastful? It’s good to cheer on your team and conference, I get it. I just think the Big 10 is overrated when it counts. IU may when it this year, who knows. If IU, and Big 10 fans want to brag about the greatness of the conference at that point it will be credible. Until then…

  87. IU CLASS???
    4:27 pm November 28, 2012 Permalink

#84 IU would have to have class to know if anybody did or did not. You are forgetting that IU let a man physicaly abuse his players for 20 years don’t you. Man that Realy showed class lol.
IU was so obnoxious to our fans and players last year that Cal refused to put his people back in that situation agian. Showed real class!
IU bought rings for beating a team in Dec. even though the same team beat them in march. CLASS personified.
Going to a UK web site and telling them to STFU. CLASS
Looks like IU fans should get their own house in order before casting stones at anther.

#59 actually UK and Maryland where the first 2 NCAA teams to play in the Barclays, so technically Cal is the originator of that.
Did you really say that IU already played at the Barclays and the bankers life in Indy, but you didn’t need to whore yourselves or your season ticket holders out. Isn’t that a oxymoron didn’t you say you had already done the very thing that you were bitching about. Stay Classy IU Lol

IU fan…was reading some on your new FB coach. Congrats. But seriously. … I don’t give a damn if we play you guys unless it is in March on the way to a final four. …where the best team will win and advance. We will both be contenders for some time now. Accept that and focus on your season and I will do the same.

Looks like Indiana is in trouble with the NCAA again. Crean’s rear is still hurting from that loss in the NCAA tourney last year because he couldn’t control the ref’s for the win and had to suffer that loss from the BETTER team. IU wins at home because of the drunk fans fill the stands and the visiting team fans will not go there because of the drunks in the place. Bloomington, Home of the Drunks
