Calipari to deliver “Riders Up!” call at the Derby?

The National Championship revelry keep rolling on. In the wake of yesterday’s news that John Calipari and his coaching staff will be honorary grand marshals at the Pegasus Parade comes this juicy little rumor, from the Courier-Journal’s Rick Bozich:
Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari will in the paddock for the Derby on May 5. And his assignment will be more than to mingle.
Word is that Calipari will deliver the “Riders Up!” command to jockeys for the greatest two minutes in sports.
Delivering the call seems an odd honor to me, but an honor nonetheless (perhaps the horse people among us can fill us in on the significance?). Plus, who better than Cal to prime a group of thoroughbreds for battle?
34 Comments for Calipari to deliver “Riders Up!” call at the Derby?
if they do this, i mean it really, i am boycotting !!!
oddly enough, this is my mating call after the bar closes
Bitching on Cards Rivals forum in 3..2..1
Again, win something Cards, and you too can have glory! Instead, Rick is announcing the Specials of the Day at Porcini’s.
Damn, Erin what’s with the “don’t invade my space hat”?
Erin Andrews wore a big hat so people wouldn’t stare at her big…….nose. Yep, that’s it.
Who Better? Love it! And I wish the team was riding in the parade.
Love Coach’s body language in the photo. What a guy!
When did The Kentucky Derby become the Louisville Derby?
she fancy
Ms. Thompson–it’s the equivalent of “Gentlemen, start your engines” for the Indy 500. Of course, they may not mean anything to you either.
LOL @ #2
Is Erin Andrews still boning Josh Hopkins?
Speaking of riding and I wouldn’t even make her take the hat off.
Id wear her for a hat
#9 nailed it! Beat me to the punch, brother!
Meanwhile, The Truth is spending the night outside the homeless shelter’s phone booth so he can call in to all the talk shows tomorrow morning bitching about Cal getting the spotlight. I love seeing the envy in all the haters’ eyes!
careful Coach…don’t want to upset the Loserville fans! Is your relationship with Erin the reason you are getting all the best players?
I think Erin likes to keep those puppies in the shade…UV rays are harmful!
Wow
Ty,
Usually its not a big deal, just the racing steward that is in the paddock checking tatoos (yes all throughbred horses are tatooed on the inside of their lips to ID the horse and avoid imposters) will just say “RIDERS UP” right before they leave paddock for post parade. Having said that, I still think its kind of a cool honor. Makes Cal part of the actual race.
id crawl through a mile of broken glass just to listen to Erin Andrews fart through a radio
The best part will be when they announce Cal…
“Ladies and Gentlemen – the coach of the 2012 National Champion University of Kentucky Wildcats, John Calipari…”
Suck on that card fans.
This just gives the Cards something else to complain about. Kudos to Coach Cal! You are awesome in the way you represent the Commonwealth’s team – UK – The National Champions for the 8th time!
That is so disrespectful towards my dad.
We need to get Anthony Bennet and all the 2013 recruits to tune into the NBC broadcast. Will give Smell fans another reason to scream about UK having an unfair recruiting advantage.
Thanks, 17. I knew of the tradition, but didn’t know if it was a “thing” for celebrities to do it. Cool.
The honor is equivalent to saying “Gentlemen start you engines” at the Indianapolis 500.
yeah like gentlemen start your engines at the indy 500, right guys?
17 Oh Tobias, you blowhard!
Beware of the horse people among us, for they’re masters of equestrian sorcery !
# 18, are you sure that you are not really SNH.
funny shit #2
and she fine
# 21,,,,like your dad deserves any respect. 15 seconds,,,,,any self respecting man would have said something like ” I wore the thing out”
Is that young lady aware that a flying saucer has landed on her head or has she drank too much?
After all these years, there’s still not a hotter reporter than Erin Andrews. I’d like to get my 15 seconds in there.
Erin is a first class gal so I’m not going to make any crude comments and she is a fan of Kentucky and Coach Cal. Gotta show her some love…in a respectful way 🙂
GO CAL…GO CATS!!
For all you young men on here who are making rude comments about mss Andrews. I think you are like dogs chasing a car. You couldn’t drive it if you caught it.
