Calipari met with Goodwin, Poythress, and Cauley-Stein last night

Once he returned from his trip to Huntington yesterday, John Calipari sat down with some of his players, including Archie Goodwin, Alex Poythress and Willie Cauley-Stein, to discuss their basketball futures. The meetings occurred Thursday evening while the rest of America was watching Miami and Indiana lose Sweet 16 games in the NCAA tournament.

I’m sure the discussion is exactly what one would expect: Cal laying out the options, NBA potential and what to expect at Kentucky next season. The players will now do what they need to do to make sure the best decision is made.

Judging by the photo, Equal and Splenda are in serious consideration. Sweet ‘N Low appears to be out of the picture.

Uh… So he didnt meet with Harrow? I think that should’ve been mentioned in the article bc it means either a) he’s only meeting with Potential nba players or b) harrow could be part of transfer talks or c) harrow is staying.

Whatever is done, we need to make certain everybody does not leave at the end of next year. I think we have to offer Hawkins, and some other people not McD’s that will be here past next March. If all these guys stay and leave next year with the new guys, we will be nowhere the next year. I agree you can’t start from scratch every year, not enough practice players, or substitutes. Get creative with scholarships like Pitino did. Use academic scholarships, or whatever to insure we always have 10-12 players.

First of all, Harrow isn’t a future NBA player, period. Not this year, not next year, not ever. So I’m guessing Cal expects him to stay or transfer but he isn’t losing any sleep over it.

Not playing in the NCAA tourney really hurt their draft chances. Some other kids are taking full advantage of the spotlight like Vander Blue for Marquette. When NBA scouts look at the tape of our guys they can’t be impressed.

Weak class or not, Goodwin/Poythress/WCS are not ready for the leap. They’ll regret it big time if they try it.

    Cal: Hello?
Ryan: Hi Cal, it’s me Ryan. I wanted to talk about (click)……Hello? Are you there? He must’ve been driving through a tunnel.

This is unrelated but with Julius Randle, Bill Self made that last ditch meeting with him to try and swing him. It of course didn’t work. I’m just worried that Cal’s visit to Wiggins yesterday may have been something similar. Is that a possibility or am I just being paranoid?

#13 You are just being paranoid. It is just as likely Cal was there to show support to a future Wildcat on a very special day for him. Wiggins won’t make a decision until after the McDonald’s game as he will be test driving how well he would mesh with next years freshmen in that game.

Harrow can be valuable in a lower pressure backup role. He’s not the scrub a lot of you make him out to be. He took over some games and is still a good college player. Don’t be THAT person that only sees the bad in these players. I’m sure you are all perfect at your jobs and are on your way to being a huge success. Some guys are just OK and that is fine. Even at kentucky. There is a role he can fill and be more than waterboy like you think. I hope he comes back. He is still a cat and part of la familia.

15 – I think he was referring to this season where Alex poythress was practicing against Brian long every day. We need at least 7 players who can contribute every year

    12:33 pm March 29, 2013 Permalink

My oponion is WCS and Poythress are gone and Archie comes back. WCS will get drafted because hes 7 feet in a weak draft. If he comes back he runs the risk of showing what we already know hes not that good. Poythress isnt going to ever be drafted any hire then he will now hes lazy and lazy cant be fixed.
i think Archie will be alot better with other good players on his team. Archie tried to hard at times anther year with Cal will help because he has the hart and work ethic to get better.
I think they realy are making a choice to comeback for 2 years not 1. All 3 will have a hard time going next year in a loaded draft. UK alone will have 4 who could be going higher. Archie is the only one who wants to be a Wildcat the other 2 are just passing threw. Archie with 2 more years and a better jump shot could be a top 10 player.

I don’t think just by coming back that these guys should be considered “legends” ^
I do believe If they come back they can be part of a much better team….
Honestly it shocks me that this years first round loss to Robert Morris in the NIT
Has not derailed anyone’s deniability train one bit…
We are going to be much much improved, but it’s tough to win a National Championship
Very very tough.. I can’t wait to see what next season holds and I will be in Rupp at each and every
Game… But I’m not barking about number 9 until its time…

I think Cal knows where Wiggins wants to go, but until he pulls the trigger his hands are tied due to the fact he has to keep the scholarship open until he comes or not. I personnally think we need Cauley and Poythress back. especially if we dont get Wiggins.

    19) No i think he was trying to be like alot of people and complain about this season. i agree with 15 I think Cal has it figured out fairly well. We can suffer threw a down year to get the other 3. We have seen threw Tubby what recruiting second tier type players gets you. Sure its ok to go 25- 12 and make the NCAA every year at some places but not here. If we arent in the running for the FF we might as well be in the NIT,
What happened this year will happen again. High school basketball was down so we where in trouble, but we will have great teams like we had last year and next year too. If Nerlens hadn’t got hurt we would have been better this year.

    20. I disagree. Poythress is Terrance Jones made over. He just needs somebody pushing him for PT and I think his potential is alot higher than anybody else including WCS. Willie should go, he will be a first rounder this year and no way he is next year. But as far as saying he is just passing “threw”, I don’t think anybody expected WCS to be a first rounder after year 1.

    12:50 pm March 29, 2013 Permalink

    22) one more thing to think about. Comeing back to win a title is the worst thing a kid can do. If thats why anyone comesback they better go. it takes a whole lot to win a title thats not in your hands. If thats the only reason you comeback anything short and it was a failure. UK is best program in NCAA history and we only have 8 titles. that should tell just how hard they are to win.

    11. WCS
    12. Poythress
    13. Wiltjer

Polson is back as walk on
Malone, Long, & Lanter are walkons

Wiggins – If he comes Harrow gets the boot unless 1 other guy goes NBA
Hawkins – If Wiggins comes first then one guy will go to the league and Harrow gets the boot. So Harrow better be hoping WCS chases the money.

    WCS-go make your $
Poythress- go or stay you will be fine if you find a passion for playing
Archie-Seasoning will do you good but you can go if you realize you aren’t Superman in the lane. Solid future if you work on the little things and get more patient.
Harrow- not as bad as everyone thinks but nothing special. You know that, don’t beat yourself up, gain some confidence ,play your game and you can help this team.
Wiltjer- for the love of God speed up your release an
d you can be amazing. You will always ha e slow feet but if you can shoot with a player within 5feet you can be a Kyle korver in the league.
Brian long- please appreciate something. Anything. Jersey shore was an excuse for a second world flooding but had a long run its OK to be satisfied with that.

I can’t believe no one has noticed this, but pepper seems to actually be in the lead. Long, athletic and with a stronger frame, he will make it difficult for the sweeteners to post up or get off good shots. Plus pepper can make you sneeze from the parking lot. Pepper should definitely be a one-and-doner (try putting a teaspoon on your sammich and deny that!).

Good point #28 titles are very hard to come by. Only 8 titles and were the winningest program in history. UCLA 11 but only 1 after Wooden. There’s never a gauranteed title in store for any program considering the level of competition in colege bb today. While I like our chances next year its by no means in the bag.

And guess what? If Hawkins wants to come, there will be a spot for him as well.

Anyone telling WCS to go is an idiot. This is a weak draft, but he’ll start and could be a top-ten pick next year if he improves. He’s an automatic bust at this point if he leaves.

Poythress and Goodwin are the ones who should worry about their stock. Neither would start and coming back would essentially be a three-year commitment, not for one more season.

#6-how do you know Harrow is gone. I hope not-we need him. There is no guarantee that harrison is going to beat out harrow next yr. And even if he does, we would only have Polson as backup. When Ryan is on his game he is a great point guard. This was his 1st year playing full time. Give him a break. The TEAM was mediocre by UK standards but there were a number of teams in the NCAA with similar records to the Cats.No single player caused UK to falter. You cant win big with just freshmen. So I hope they all come back. So, again #6, how do you know Harrow is leaving?
