After participating this morning in the UK women’s basketball’s 5K for 5 K” run, Calipari was interviewed by WKYT 27 News. Here are some excerpts from the interview:
It’s finally completed now,” Calipari said. “In all my years, if you look back, we’ve had years where we had nine or 10 scholarship players. Most years we’re going to have 11 to 12. ”
The NCAA limit is 13.
The coach reiterated that he wants happy, hungry players on his team and he feels it’s difficult to please everyone, especially when players want more minutes.
“It’s hard to keep 13 players happy,” Calipari said. “You don’t want any players here who aren’t going to play and aren’t going to be happy.”
Calipari hinted his roster might even lose one player. “Right now, we have 12 scholarship players. We could have 11 by the time the year starts. You just don’t know.”
Speculation will immediately begin about which current UK player could be on the chopping block. One would think the two most likely candidates are DeAndre Liggins and Josh Harrellson. It’s been reported that Calipari was pleasantly surprised with how Harrellson played during recent workouts and Josh seems to be enjoying his time in Lexington. Liggins’s workouts were supposedly much more inconsistent, but Calipari did recruit him while at Memphis and his potential has not yet been fully maximized.
If UK does lose one additional player, this will create a shorter bench and less depth next season, but it would also open up another scholarship for 2010. With so many graduating seniors and a few likely early departures, Calipari will certainly have the opportunity to exceed his stellar recruiting class from this year. Despite it being summer, the next few months could prove to be very exciting.
