Calipari gives scholarships to Sam Malone and Brian Long

In a news blurb that flew under the radar due to the timing of the announcement (in the midst of the Kentucky football game), apparently both Sam Malone and Brian Long will be receiving scholarships this season. Malone and Long were both walk-ons last season, but the smaller roster size this year allows Calipari the chance to reward both of them for at least one season. Even with the move, Calipari will still have 1 available scholarship just in case a player becomes available mid-season. Tony Trocha theorists, have a field day with that one. Go Cats and I really hope Brian Long can appreciate this one… (radio joke).

Is that a good move after what happened with Jarnell Stokes last year?

Bad idea….yes they are working hard and probably help the practices some…BUT with ever increasing tuition costs we should not be spending money unnecessarily….

That’s 4 walkons on schollie this year for anyone who’s counting.

    2) Cal has 13 schollies to use. The fact that he doesn’t use them all has nothing to do with saving money, but rather saving spots for the next year when he knows he doesn’t need to add players this year just to fill them.

Tuition costs go up every year at every school. The basketball team scholarships aren’t exactly the big reason. And if you’re going to complain about scholarships, complain about a sport that isn’t one of the 2 actual revenue producing ones.

The thing I was never clear on is once a player goes from walk-on status to scholarship, can they be bumped back down to walk-on later on ? I thought they had changed the rule to prohibit this, but am not sure.

Cal more than brings in enough $$ to offset rewarding these guys with a scholarship. We are #3 on merchandise sales (up from #7). Cal has earned the right not to be second guessed with his minor decisions. We have one scholarship left so there really shouldn’t be a downside. No way he adds 2 this year so zero risk of the Stokes scenario happening again.

As long as the player starts as a walk on, you can give them a scholarship and later take it back. What you can’t do is have a player start as a scholarship player and then later take it away. Of course, Pitino and UL just runs them off, and sends them to the D-League, otherwise known as Florida International.

This is an easy one. If they are on scholarship. Their grades count towards our Team GPA and academic ratings. Walk ons do not count.
This puts a lot of pressure on these two. They better had put up very good grades..
This is a good move. If you have three extra scholarships. Give them to a couple of kids who work hard like Brian and Sam.

I honestly believe that I could beat Brian Long or Sam Malone, one on one, maybe even both of them together. They are terrible.

Those guys don’t deserve to wear the uniform. The are only hear because of who their daddies are. Landon Foster and Adam Delph were better players and from here but they were given the boot, at least I think that was Landon’s last name. Either way, walk ons should be KY boys who appreciate it and will play their hearts out if given the chance.

The boys from in state can get better aid and tuition is a lot cheaper. Most probably aren’t having to come out of pocket anyway.

You guys sound like Pitino! This is UK where we reward players for their hard work and treat them like part of them team, we do not treat them like a spare part and through them off to the side when we’re finished with them; leave that to U of L. I’m happy to see that Cal is giving them the scholarships, it shows that everyone is important not just the top rated guys.
