It was reported earlier today, but made a little more official when Calipari addressed the cutting of Eloy Vargas tonight on coachcal.com. The move didn’t come as a surprise to most after watching Eloy perform in the exhibition games, but as a wildcat we all wanted him to make the squad. Still, the opportunity was a positive for the senior and there is certainly nothing wrong with losing a spot to Horford and Villanueva.
Here’s what Cal had to say from his piece:
One of those players (cut) is Eloy Vargas. I’ve talked with Eloy and he fully understands the decision. He will be coming home this weekend to prepare for his senior season with his teammates at Kentucky. Eloy has enjoyed a great experience with this Dominican team. He was a really a great teammate and gained valuable experience during his three weeks.
Eloy was going against veterans like Al Horford and Charlie Villanueva and Jack Michael Martinez. He held his own, but these guys have been playing in the pro leagues for years. When everybody is so close, you’ve got to look at it as we need three big men, we need three point guards and we need to fill out the roster from there. Eloy understands the decision, and what I think he’s done and what I told him is he’s probably cemented his spot on the national team for years to come.
In all likelihood, it is probably more important that Eloy be in Lexington for the start of his senior year and season, bonding with the Kentucky team and getting a head start on his classes. If Calipari’s intuition about Eloy cementing a spot on the national team rings true, there will be plenty of opportunities for the young man to play for his home country – he’s only got one year left to be a Kentucky Wildcat.
So welcome back home Eloy. Now let’s all work hard to make sure you’ve got some bragging rights over Garcia, Horford and maybe even Villanueva to take into the locker room next year.
