Cal: “We were stabbing ourselves in the eye.”

After the game, Cal didn’t have many positive things to say. In fact, the only good news he could find was that the rest of the teams that needed to win seemed to be loosing as well: “I just hope we’re the best of the bad.”

The Cats had a golden opportunity to solidify their tournament resume and punch their ticket. Instead, they “laid an egg,” according to Cal: “It was in our hands and we didn’t take care of business.”

The worst offender? Ryan Harrow, who Cal singled out for poor lay: “We had one guy (Harrow) go 2 for 15 and missed 12 layups.”

Hard to argue with.

I didn’t expect a win but didn’t expect it to be this ugly. It’s tough to beat a team 3 times in one season unless one is so much better than the other, and obviously this UK team ain’t that. I expected a better performance and a close loss and at this point would have been happier with that.

Let me begin by saying that I’m very glad that I have a wife, kids and a very beautiful and full life to come home to tonight after this national embarrassment at the hands of a 15-16 Vanderbilt team. All the jokes made at the expense of Kevin Stallings will be on us tonight in one of the most miserable performances in the history of UK basketball. Actually it is quite difficult to think of a more insipid performance in our history. So, now it comes time to write the epitaph on this excruciatingly painful and uninspiring season. What to say? NIT bid? Please, no, decline it so that this team can be no more and so that Cal can go to Gethsemani and take a week or two to meditate and reflect upon how the all-access circus mentality has destroyed our ability to build a fundamentally sound, hungry and determined basketball team less than one-year after we dominated the sport….how the “players first I’d never want to offend an aspiring 5-star basketball recruit” has decimated a coaches ability to mold “ballers” into real basketball players and men who have balls and know what it takes to win….and what an honor and privilege it is to wear the blue and white….etc.etc.etc…I sincerely hope that this is the last basketball game we’ll ever see this group play…not because I hate these kids or want to see them fail…but because they’re not ready for this stage, they never were ready for it, and the circus into which they we’re thrown never gave them a chance….it is time to scrap that script, close out this year, and begin again next year with the business-THE SOLE BUSINESS-of learning how to become a team and win basketball games.

There is a bright side. The Forgetables will not get an NCAA bid, thus preventing the embarrassment of losing in a play-in game. Decline the NIT bid – why bother. We can now put this awful season behind us and move on.

Come on Cal. You’re a player’s first coach. Surely you understand it would be better to go to the NIT were it’s possibly you could win a game or two and help lottery picks on our team pad their stats for the scouts.

Don’t be a hypocrite Cal – think of the player first! Besides – Drake needs an NTT ring for his left hand.

Disappointing all around. I was hoping to play the Hogs as the team would have been up for a revenge game. Instead, we played a team that we barely beat twice. Felt the team just expected to win this one again with the UK fans packing the place out. Hard to see this team never really get on track this year after the way last years’ team had such great chemistry. Of course, this is the first of Cal’s teams w/o an NBA guard to lead the team. We’ve been spoiled a bit as fans, but I will continue to back the CATS. A bandwagon fan I am not. Besides, every win keeps us that many more in front for all-time victories.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen the ball bounce one team’s way so many times in a game. Vandy had 4 or 5 shots that went in that had no business going in. The one shot from in front of our bench was unbelieveable. Go back and watch the tape and look at coach’s reaction. This team is very young and doesn’t have much confidence. I believe they quit when they saw so many bounces go against them. We can’t win the NC every year!! I just wish this team had some fun and gave a little more effort. We’ll se how they play in the NCAA tournament. You never know.

I hope Wiggins isn’t rewarding this. Maybe Harrow can be there one day when one of you fall, and then kick you in the gut over and over again. That’s what supportive fans do. Kick their team when they’re down after an embarrassing loss.

Does Cal know how to teach offensive sets? This team seems so out of sync on the court practically every game this year. They stand around, the players have to be directed to spots on the floor. I personally think we see just what kind of coach Cal is when he has inferior talent, but talent that was recruited to be more talented than most teams. Not at all impressed with either Cal, or this team. This team doesn’t deserve an NCAA bid, no an NIT bid. The Cats wouldn’t stand a chance in either. In one manner or another, I hope every last one of these players leave with the exception of WCS.

37 – I agree with you completely. All he heard was how well Hood was practicing – but he never got any minutes. Then the end of the season when Cal had no choice – Hood gets thrown into the mix with virtually no experience, no rythym and no confidence in his game. That ALL falls back on the head coach – the same coach who whined that he didn’t have a bench.

Then,…the ONLY PERTINENT QUESTION would be,….. “That being the case Coach Cal (that one player went 2 for 15 and made four turnovers),..then why would you INSIST to play him 30 minutes of the game (or however many minutes he played)”??????????? In fact,…an even more pertinent question migh be,….’Why would you insit on playing someone THAT BAD for over 30 games? Because he asked if he could have his starting job back??? What if one of the cheerleaders asked if they could start, Cal??? Would you let them start???” I thought Saul Smith was the worst Kentucky player I had ever seen,….that got unlinited minutes in spite of being HORRIBLE. Now CAL has outdone the TUB,..with his insistance of playing Harrow,… matter how bad he is. I give Cal a pass this year, after his previous 3 years. But he outdid himself this year with his determination to play Ryan Harrow ALL YEAR LONG,..when any one of the cheerleaders would have been better. Not just one game,…he insisted on playing him THE WHOLE SEASON!!!! That does not bode well for next year. Maybe Harrow will NOT be back next year,…and that will take that moronic move OFF THE TABLE, where Cal can’t make that same mistake again!!!! I can only pray that is the case. Anyway,….Go Big Blue!!!

I am as upset as anyone. However i refuse to bash our players or Coach, who btw just won a NCAA championship. But does anyone understand we had 5 new starters? 3 of who are freshmen? And our best players are freshmen? They are 18 yr old kids! We have been lucky that freshman the last few yrs matured so quickly! So this yr the kids act like freshmen and we want to kick them all to the curb and fire Cal? Take any other team that starts 3 freshmen and see if they do any better. Cal always has done a amazing job with freshmen. Something most probably couldn’t. I’m still proud they won 20 and may just may still make the Tourney. But remember they are just freshmen.

I have a bunch of friends that live in Raleigh and they predicted that we would absolutely loathe Ryan Harrow before he left Lexington. They were right. Ryan it was great knowing you, now get your ass on the first bus back to Atlanta. You have disgraced the Kentucky uniform as few players in our proud history have. You are not alone in your shame however, your playmates were equally weak. Are we sure these guys were high school seniors and not high school freshman when we got them? Did anyone notice that when we went to a 2-3 zone that we stopped vandy cold for several possessions (that started our run until we remembered we can’t score)? With THIS team, that zone would have been a much better option all year…but his Pitino-esque pride and stubborness would not allow him to alter his way.

I agree with the other posters…Poythress, Goodwin, Harrow should not be offered their scholarships next season. They are receiving those to play basketball and represent our University and program…not to completely quit and not care about anything.

Makes me pine for the days of the Unforgettables. Those guys had heart, played as a team, and the whole was greater than the sum of the parts. Last year’s team had it too. I wish Cal would have gone with Polson and Hood – at least they hustle.

Oh, and I’ll tell you why he played Harrow. Because he GOT 12 lay ups. You never anticipate a guy missing lay ups. He’s better than Poyhtress and Goodwin.

So based off how Archie and Alex played as freshmen we should just let them walk. Hmm does anyone remember Darius Miller as a freshman? Just disappeared for games? Just seemed out of it at times? Pretty sure he turned out pretty good.

So, 92, just because they are freshmen, that means they don’t have to give effort, or care, or have pride and fight for things? This season has just exposed Cal…he is not a great coach. He is THE BEST recruiter, and a good coach…I’ll take that if we win it every other year…but I can gripe also when our guys quit on the name on the front of their jersey.

99//i don’t see how anyone can bash cal for this one. vandy couldn’t miss and we couln’t make. good point about harrow. 12 missed layups. he got to the basket 12 times–but couldn’t score. we shot 50% at the foul line–vandy 90%? we just don’t have shooters on this team. i think next years guards will change that

I hope that I’m not the only person that believes this “team” isn’t the only bunch that needs to take a long, hard look at itself. It would seem the “suits” on the coaching staff need to take a good while and ponder why they could NEVER get this group of individuals to buy into a system–of any kind and/or get them motivated. I would rather watch Polson and Hood play 40 minutes (because they at least try) than watch a bunch of over-hyped, under-performing head cases go through the motions for 25 minutes. The majority of this team doesn’t deserve to wear a jersey with “Kentucky” on it. They quit, plain and simple. Pitino’s first-year team would have mopped the floor with this bunch because they had heart and pride–something that obviously escaped most of this bunch. As for the coaches, well, a loss to a 14-15 Vandy team in the first round of the SEC kinda’ says it all. If there is a god, I hope they turn down an invitation to the NIT. And Cal, I love ya’ man, but it’s time you took your head out of your a$$ and learn to play a zone when necessary.

I don’t care how many shots Harrow missed all game, the fact that this team doesn’t have one player that can take over a game is the reason we lost. After awhile Harrow was taking shots just because no one else would. We as UK fans have become spoiled the last few years with point guards. Harrow is not a terrible pg, this team just didn’t mesh well at all which is one of the variety of problems. Cousins, Wall, and Bledsoe were all inseparable, just like Lamb/Jones and MKG/Davis. I agree this year can be put down as one we would all like to forget but all in all it does show us how impressive it was that the ’11-12 team was so dominate. Whoever stays will be rewarded with next year’s class and whoever leaves, best of luck to them. Either way this was a team made up of kids, everyone move on. We are BBN and we will prevail.

Six assists. That says it all doesn’t it? A good point guard will average 6 assists himself. Our whole team got six!! That just shows how low this teams basketball I.Q. is. They just don’t understand the game or how to play it. We threw a lob pass that hit WCS in the chest. Harrow drove the lane and had all 5 players collapse on him and he still shoots the ball. I have never seen a team in my life that has such a low overall basketball I.Q.

Win or lose at least they chose UK. These guys at least deserve the respect of the fans. They could have picked any program in the nation and even though some will say they should’ve, they chose to come to UK, the greatest program in college basketball. Not everyone can live up to expectations and those that try shouldn’t be punished because of it. Go Big Blue!

#97 BINGO!!!!! Right on the money. Wiltjer was in the middle of the back line with the 2/3 so he could not hurt us on defense. Yet,..we had Wiltjer for offense,….something we desperately needed all year. We went on a 10 to 0 run when he played the 2/3. But Cal is WAY TOO STUBBORN!!! He would rather LOSE with a man to man, than win with a zone. That’s what worries me. We always have the best talent,…but Cal’s vow and pledge to ONLY use man to man cost us this whole year. And no one ever asks the simple question,..”Why do you REFUSE to ever use a zone????” He says he’d rather sit on the toilet than use a zone. Oh really? Well,….I guess then you answered the question. Next question?????

Hey 87, you must be on crack. Tubby never went to the NIT like his 2 successors have. Do not criticize a coach who never went to the NIT at UK. There has only been 2 UK coaches never to go to the NIT, Pitino and Smith.

I blame Calipari for continuing to recruit no one that stays longer than 5 months at UK. Too much pressure for 18 yr olds, no matter how talented they are. Cal has always had experience at UK UNTIL this year. We all know how successful Cal is with NO experience dont we.
This is Kentuckys program, not the players. Hell these kids dont last 5 months and many of us have been here a lifetime. And I am not talking 25 years either……………….

I understand that everyone is upset. Even the coach was upset, but that was no excuse to throw a guy under the bus. Cal treated Harrow as his guy. He wanted him running the team. I am disappointed that UK Lost, but to see Harrow’s distraught reaction puts this season and what just happened,in perspective, it’s just a f***king game. I am seriously considering not ever watching an other basketball game again. It’s really retarded to think that basketball is life or death. UK winning or losing does not pay my damn bills. Sheesh.

Agree with many of comments concerning lack of effort and wimpy play of these guys. Easy for me to critize these kids from my recliner but I can not excuse lack of intelligence and execution of fundamentals (e.g. hey 22, 33, and 15 how about one of you blocking someone out on a rebound once in a while and when the ball is bouncing on the floor in front of you how about actually going to it and grabbing it?) 15 (CWS) has potential but I do not see all the adulation he is getting. He is still weak with the ball, can not consistently make 2-3 foot shots, and still recklessly throws the ball away. He is not alone on these issues as he along with his teammates still make the same plays there were making in November. That said, I think ultimately this falls on Cal. Love the guy and believe everyone is entitled to an off year but hey Cal at this point isn’t it time to play the guys who seem to want to give effort and who show some intelligence out there i.e. Polsen, Hood, and yes regardless of some of his negatives Archie

The “fans” have every right to criticize the team and players. Some of these guys are at UK to showcase their talents for a pro career and know Cal can get them to that level. After a year of college and- a “kid” goes pro and signs a muti million dollar contract at the age of 18-19 years old can he then be criticized and if not what is the age limit on when they can be held responsible for their actions?

To single out a young man for fault as Calipari did and for that young man to take responsibility as Ryan did shows such a difference in character. I am so disappointed in Calipari and the BBN culture that begat him.
