Cal wants to add one more player

Reds skipper Dusty Baker, Calipari, and half of Brandon Weems

After getting his Noodles Hahn on before the Cincinnati Reds game last night, John Calipari spoke to Reds announcer Jim Day and he hinted at how UK’s roster could play out for next season. Calipari told Day he hopes to sign one more player to UK’s roster before the 2012-13 season begins, but he didn’t give any clues as to who that player could be.

Obviously, Anthony Bennett is the ideal player to ink that signature, but with the Croatian kid in town today and others being recruited, there could be a number of guys who could end up wearing Kentucky blue.

Will he take more than one?

We had a video of the interview last night but it was taken down from YouTube.

7 are leaving. Hood is back in the lineup and we have signed 4 replacements. Seems that he would want to sign 2 more, unless he is giving a scholarship to a walk on.

Hopefully we will get two more. Bennett and another guard…maybe the Croatian kid.

Why just one player? It looks like we have several options left with Lyons, Jefferson, the Croatian, etc. We were very lucky this past year on injuries, grades and other issues. We have plenty of scholarships. The only reason not to use them is if he wants to save them for next year which could be our best class ever (or not). I know highlight videos can show anything you want, but the Croatian kid looks like he has NBA range.

2 – Don’t forget about 2013. Other than Noel, none of these guys are guaranteed one and done players. What happens if they all come back? Cal is planning on a monster class for 2013 and I bet he wants to have maximum number of schollies open for it. We will have no graduating seniors on scholarship for next season.

I think everything Cal has said and done in the last couple days is to put pressure on Bennett to commit soon. We don’t really want that kid from Va Tech. Not only would we want Bennett way before we got him but he would also take up space on 2013’s team where it’s looking like were for sure getting one of thetop power forwards in the country in Aaron Gordon, Julius randle, or chris walker. And saying that we only need one more person is bogus. We need depth at the 4 and 2. Hopefully all this gets Bennett to commit soon and we end uo with one of the three in mark Lyons, Torian Graham, or that croation kid. No reason to give a walk on a scholarship when we will be lacking in depth.

I don’t see how coach Cal does it. I’m getting tired of being held hostage by some eighteen year old ego, who will be a millionare in a year, playing hard to get so he can build his rep before he goes into the NBA.

    2. I think he’s trying to put some needed pressure on Bennett and Lyons to consider again what they would miss out on if they continue to treat their Kentucky offer as if it was from like Kansas or Arizona. Cal is making a point saying my time is valuable and I will bring success to my players that are committed while also reaffirming how the opportunity to play at Kentucky is rare and coveted. Thought i would beat everyone to the punch in overthinking this comment, please lets not read to much into this. That said lets land Bennett Hazzell Lyons Jefferson Graham and that Croatian shooter and call it a day.

No 4 I have the same question. Its obvious Bennett is a huge priority and with us recruiting so many guards its pretty obvious that Cal wants to sign a guard too so why not 2 more players? My only guess is this is Cal’s way of sending a message to the recruits (i.e. hey if yur thinking about coming here u better hurry up and sign).

Coach is so smart it’s unbelieveable. Don’t believe everything he says. He was sending a message with his comment about hoping to sign one more player and he’s sending a message by all of these new names coming up lately. He wants Bennett and he is going to get him if the kid has the heart to play at UK. These other players can be great additions to our squad but Bennett puts us at the top of the mountain again next year instantly. Doesn’t mean we can’t get there without him but he makes it so much easier. GO Cats!!! Go Cal!!!!!

  19. JayCee

Head games, people. By making it appear as if he only wants to fill one spot, he creates a sense of urgency among his recruits. then he can call his main target and flatter him even more by telling him he’ll take him no matter how many slots he wants to fill or what he said before.

Create a situation and then exploit it. Dude is a salesman. Let. Him. Work.

If Cal decides he wants Lyons and Lyons wants to commit- why would we not take him? He would be gone for 2013. I can’t see Poythress staying for two years. It looks like we should have six more scholarships for next year (Hood and Wiltjer are the only two returning scholarship players + Harrow and four new players = 7 scholarships taken out of 13 total).

I hope adding Bennett (who should be our #1 priority) doesn’t mean we don’t get King Kong Montrezl. He may not be an all-around polished player, but damn I’d like to see him swatting down some biplanes and ripping down rims at Rupp next year!

  27. CATS

Noel is projected to go from 1-3 in the 2013 draft, poythress 6-7, and Harrow late in the first round, so those 3 would probably leave, but I could also see them staying. If Bennett signs, he has hinted at wanting to leave after his first year to help his mom out. So lets just say those 4 leave, if we get Bennett and leave a scholarship open for next year, then we would have 5 scholarships open for next year. Sounds pretty good to me, even though I would really like that croatian kid to add another great shooter for this season. I really wish Bennett, Harrell, and Croatian would come even though that would mean taking away someone’s scholly. However, I know that has about a 20% chance of happening because Bennett and Harrell aren’t both going to come.

The reason why Bennett hasnt made any “official” visits is because he hasnt qualified, he still needs to pass the SAT. He is definitely the most talented guy left on the board so coaches are waiting and hoping he gets the qualifying test score. School is almost out, why would he want to wait until now to take official visits? Its because he cant, Findlay Prep can help his GPA and prep him for test but its up to him to get the correct score, he hasnt. So we wait.

  36. G

Bennett is liking what Donovan is promising. He can play small forward on a front line with Patrick Young and Erik Murphy and can shoot threes until his arm falls off. Temper your enthusiasm Kentucky fans. He ain’t coming no matter how many tweets Noel and Poythress make.

Bennett can take a visit as long as he has taken the ACT. He does not have to wait until he passes the test. He may go to UF but what is he waiting on? Billy can tell him he is a 3 all day long but watch what spot he plays when the season starts. He is a combo forward which is what he will play if he chooses UK.

I trust Cal. He knows that 2013 can be a monster class for UK , so I trust that he is keeping that in mind . Also, with all these recruits being looked at, what does it say about his confidence I Hood being that a contributor next year. I have high hopes for him but I’m worried and it looks like Cal is also. Trust in Cal! Hes not going to sign 3star forward that will take away from signing a 5 star all American next season. I just don’t see him doing that. I do believe too that its all to put pressure on Bennett. He may be liking what Donovan has to say but he is more concerned with making it to the NBA. So it doesn’t matter if he can jack up 3 all day, it matters that Cal will get him in the league the fastest. Kids see our players leaving andthey see themselves in that same position.

Moser and Murphy aren’t small forwards. Point is at Uk, Bennett will be expected to bang inside and rebound whereas at UNLV and Florida he will be able to play out on the floor which is what he’ll have to do in the NBA. He’s not going to UK, so there’s no reason to debate this. If Cal wants to fortify the inside game, he’ll have to sign the 3 star forward from Va Tech or comb the jucos.

Bennett is that awkward player. He isn’t tall enough to play PF in the NBA, but he is too big to play SF. At Florida he will play the SF, but that won’t help him in the NBA. He has too big of a body to play SF. More natural SF, such as Poythress, will be able to take him off the bounce if out on the wing. Or do a quick post move on him down low. Like I said, he is just at a awkward position. He can play SF or PF. I guess we’ll just have to see what position he thinks is best for him based off what school he chooses.
