Cal tells Wiggins UK will win games by 30 if he comes

Coach Cal isn’t one to overhype his basketball teams. It seems he’s always saying they’re ranked too high or there are 50 others teams in college basketball that could beat in them. He even found a way to downplay the greatness of the 2011-12 team throughout most of that season.

But not next year’s team. He knows how good they’ll be, especially if Andrew Wiggins joins the party.

According to Huntington Prep coach Rob Fulford, who spoke to about yesterday’s visit, Calipari told Wiggins he’ll expect to win games by 30 points if he commits.

“He said if Andrew decides to come it would take it to an entire different level, and if they don’t win by an average of 30 points, then they didn’t succeed,” Fulford told Evan Daniels.

Be the face of the most talented team ever assembled and win games by 30 points?  How can Wiggins turn that down?

Wiggins signs and we will have games like 1996 again.

If we land Wiggins while bringing WCS, Goodwin, and Poythress back, 1996 won’t have ish on 2014.

Florida won many SEC games by 30 this season…
I believe if Wiggins comes.. This would be able to be done by next years
Team as well at UK… Still takes a lot of breaks, luck, and team bonding and building
To go all the way in March-April. Can’t wait until next year regardless

I like this pitch. Don’t just say we will win. Here is an opportunity to dominate at the college level.

I thought Cal was against this type of recruiting. This sounds like something Bill Self(“You’ll have a KD like impact”) would say. I thought Cal was more of a “you’ll work hard, no other promises” type of recruiter.

Why doesnt Cal just tell him this his best shot at an undefeated season. Especially if most come back.

i think this is 100% correct. Thiat is what this kid means to UK. If we get him that is all hemean to UK beating people by 30 instead of 15.
How good is Cal when we dont have to have a kid this good. This is the difference between UK and everybody else. Yes, we WANT him but we dont NEED him to win the title next year

6- Florida’s average margin was 18.2 for the season and 15.9 in SEC play, that’s a far cry from the 30 point average margin Cal is talking about.

8- Telling a kid what his INDIVIDUAL success will be, like Self did, is far more different than telling a kid what the TEAM’S success will be.

With Wiggins the Cats will average around 84 pts a game, that will ensure we have at least 6 playes averaging double figures and that will also show the NBA they are team players that share the ball. Another plus in the draft.

8-yes that is what his normal pitch is but he knows with him they can absolutely destroy teams and I love the way he is embracing by telling come be a part of history. Cal knows what he’s doing.

14 – I guess you’re right, that does make it sound a bit better. I’m still a little worried it’s a last ditch effort like #10 said.

Just my oponion but i think hes FSU bound. IF Cal has told him this I think he thinks the samething too.Thats ok like i said i dont think we NEED him anyway. If he goes to FSU we wont have to play him anyway, but it sure would be great to get him though. With Wiggins we are entering the greatest team ever put together instead of the best recruiting class.

  22. tennisman
    1:26 pm March 29, 2013 Permalink

Unfortunately you may be right #20.The greatest recruiting class may not even have the #1 player of that class. Yes Wiggins is the best I have ever seen in high school, and even Cal is human and is probably gushing over him as a basketball player like the fans, which is unCal like. However, Andrew’s Canadian with a different mindset (less historical knowledge of UK), rather shy temperment which doesn’t lend itself to the limelight. He still may come but doesn’t look eager. From a basketball point of view it seems like a no brainer but I hope the young man goes where he will be happy for 1 year and if it’s not at UK so be it. The UK fans have gone above and beyond the reasonable to attend games he’s played in and show their great admiration. Andrew never truly reciprocated and seemed unconfortable. He may come I hope he does but?

8 – Yeah..that was before Cal looked at his draft board and realized he will have the #1 rated player in EVERY POSITION next year if Wiggins comes. We will pass historic up by a mile if Wiggins picks UK. It will be silly…and I can’t wait.

curious – was the high school coach a party to the meeting? does he have a recording of what was said? unless i hear the words directly from the speaker i’m never certain of what was said. paraphrasing is as natural as breathing to sportswriters. anyway, whether or not that’s an accurate quote, the spread should be doable. just hope if wiggins comes to uk or not, the BBN respects his decision and wishes him success and i hope the kid understands the only ncaa title he’ll take home would be won wearing KY Blue.

I think we’re going to be the shit out of everybody whether or not Wiggins comes. Yes, the exact margins may be an issue, but the result will not. Anybody making any kind of comparison between the super-six and this year’s Florida team is a quack. Go and watch the videos of Julius Randle in the post or making a move to the basket and then think about him being fed by Andrew Harrison, with Aaron and James on the wings waiting for the collapse, and Johnson/Lee there for the offensive board, if Randle himself doesn’t finish it. IMO it is simple math….absolutely everything last year’s team wasn’t, this team will be. Wiggins can decide to be on the train or off it…if he goes to UNC they might very well play us in the title game and give us trouble…otherwise, lights out. period!

Without Wiggins, we are hands down the best team in the country next year. With Wiggins, we are the most talented team in the history of college basketball with a legitimate shot at going 40-0.

If Wiggy doesn’t go UK it certainly makes more sense him going to UNC than FSU. This persistance in blogs of him going to FSU just because his parents went there seems ludicrous. His brother plays for Wichita State not FSU.

#2 you are really saying that the 2014 team will be better than the 1996 team? Heck 8 of these guys have never even put on a UK jersey. ’96 team was one of the beat teams ever. I think this time last year we were talking like the 13 team had championship chances. Come on pal take it easy. Maybe you don’t remember Delk Antoine McCarty Mercer but I do and I don’t take that lightly!

I just don’t have a good feeling about that visit. To me, its like Cal was feeling him out, maybe trying to see what kind of vibe he could get. Personally, I don’t think Cal knows yet. If we miss out on him, please let it be Florida State.

You all are suck worry warts. This was Cal just checking in on his star player. Wiggins pretty much committed to UK he is just trying to figure when he wants to announce it. He is coming to UK quit overreacting.

I believe what he actually said is if you come we will not lose by 30. The one and done has left UK without a core to build around. Just a group if layers who feel they are there only as long as it takes to make the draft. Next year will have even less maturity.
