Cal still likes his team

Despite the disappointing loss, Cal still likes his team.

“One guy goes for forty out of eighty. …We did what we were supposed to do to stay in the game and then they have a kid who goes nuts on you.”

Overall, Cal was positive about his team’s performance, especially the play of Nerlens Noel, whom he called “outstanding.” Is Nerlens becoming this team’s leader? Cal said that in order for that to happen, he has to starting showing that leadership in practice, not just in games.

When asked what the Cats need to win from now on, Cal said discipline: “The will to win is having discipline with three or four minutes to go. We don’t have that right now.”

Regardless, the man still likes his team. Do you?

Of course I still like this team. A loss to #31 (cause really, thats who we lost too) isn’t the end of the season, its just a hurdle. I was at the game, and its, hands down, the most exciting game I’d been to this season. The crowd was great, we didn’t play too horribly, but we just didn’t pull out the W. Overall, kudos to Turner and Go Big Blue! 🙂

Not liking the team when the two starting guards combine for 9 turnovers, take 4-5 questionable shots each, and get minimal boards. I hope Cal secretly agrees.

The talent is there. Playing as a team with a sense of urgency and understanding their roles is far from completion. Coach will figure out this whole thing. He has to. There is too much pressure on him not to figure it out. Let’s enjoy the ride BBN.

#15: yup, you are right…cal should just play the bench for the rest of the season, for EVERYONE here knows that you only get till January 12 to get ready, all times after that, no room for improvement…their ceiling has been reached….right??

Get real…good God. The team is GOOD, we just don’t play like it. Ever play basketball? Sometimes, even the ‘good teams’ at the gym get beat.

I kinda like them. I really like a couple of the guys – Noel and WCS. I kind of like Harrow and Mays. I like the rest of the rotation a lot less. They just don’t play hard/smart/with heart – depending on which guy we’re talking about. Goodwin and Poythress are maddening because of their potential. Wiltjer – well, I scream at him a lot. I don’t think he deserves any more minutes than Hood or Beckham. He doesn’t play Defense at all, he doesn’t play Offense on the interior. Frankly, a 6’0 guard would be just as effective if they could shoot the 3.

I like everybody on the team, but the only one I see on the team going 100% is Noel, maybe Harrow. Fact is, Noel is the only one worthy of a starting spot. You would have thought, Poythrees, but he just doesn’t have the drive yet. I would try to convince him to get every rebound, that’s it… he would dominate.

I have to disagree. Our biggest liability is also the guy who determines how far we go in Goodwin. Dude goes for 40 and couldn’t miss. Still, this is a game we had no bilusiness in losing. I think we lose 5 or 6 league games but win the conference tourney and hope that we “click” in March.

Well, I still like them. This is a talented team and I still argue one of the 3-5 most talented teams in the country but talent does not always win. Cal for whatever reason is not hitting the right button with this club. You have to hate to lose and take it personal. These kids don’t. Are they selfish?? Are they thinking about going to the NBA? I don’t know but the thing that bothers me is they don’t seem to care that they lose. We are Damn lucky to be 1-1. I was an idiot that thought they would run the table in the conference. Right now at this moment. We have 11-7 in a pretty poor conference written all over it. Rupp is now not a sure thing and we showed that going on the road regardless of opponent, even an Auburn is no guarantee. I don’t care about last year, I don’t care about next year. It is 12-13 and so far it sucks!

  38. Jared

Also, the reason Matt was being rude to that guy is because that guy has the same crappy attitude that he says the players have. He’s alleging that they do not respect the program, just want to get to the NBA, blah blah blah. UK fans, hell, any fan, who says that about their young players is no better than what you’re alleging.

You — an adult — are criticizing an 18 year old kid for NOT PROVIDING ENTERTAINMENT up to your standards. What do you have to lose by watching this game? Nothing, unless you bet on it or something. People like John, or Bob, or whatever his name was, have no problem treating these players like nothing more than a piece of meat, but then act flabbergasted and offended that a kid would accept millions of dollars to go play a professional sport after only one year in college. “How dare you think for yourself, meat, now get back here and entertain me!”

I just don’t know what to say, it seems like every time I watch these guys I just get the feeling they are not going to win, and I just can’t see any effort from wiltcher at all. And poythress man it’s frustrating. Maybe he should focus only on rebounding for a while. really need a couple guys to do nothing but rebounding. Have no shooters, mays leads with his right foot, can’t hit that way, not a pure shooter. Wiltcher, what can you say, thought he would be a shooter, but he just can’t move. I don’t know, just frustrated to lose to these guys at home, think they just need a gut check and some drive, it’s just like, well I don’t care half speed is all I’m gonna do, why should I sacrifice, I’ll be in the NBA next year, except for Noel and Harrow and WCS. UK fans just have to face the truth here. These players are just not what we all thought they were. Good for freshmen but not against any experienced team. They will compete but this is a far cry from a tourney team of any kind. The Cats are surely a bubble team at this point and if the selection were made today they stay home. Noel and Harrow are the team leaders but this team lacks a go to guy and a consistent 3 pt threat. WCS hurt this team today and gave very little help. A seven foot guy like him should be at least a 7 or 8 rebound a game player but seems to be way out of position all the time and looks weak. An average team is what we have and what we have to live with.

Geez people, these guys weren’t that bad today. Turners 40 sunk us but he hit threes from way behind the line. Any coach in America would tell his team to let guys shoot from there. Making them is a fluke. Turner averages 15.5 pts a game and no one could possibly know he would or could go 14 of 19 today. Nerlens was fantastic today. Other than turnovers the other guys gave their normal contributions for the most part. If Turner puts up his normal 15 pts we probably win. Also this team was 11 and 3 before today. They are not a terrible team.

Cal is starting to sound like Joker…weak and making excuses to dance around what the problems really are. Matt got all upity on his call in show on some guy and showed his “personal attachment” to the team, thus really showing he cannot be objective. He wants to throw down reality when he needs defense, but emotions the rest of the time. I think Cal is the best coach we could possibly have…but we have to call a spade a spade…he REALLY IS a “roll the balls out and let’um play coach”. He is proving that this year, as he has made NO progress with this team. But as Matt stated on his show…every other year, that is all Cal should have to do for a title, so we can accept it…but call it what it is, and don’t act like it isn’t happening. Cal has no idea what to do with this group.

Other than Noel this team is very soft and unmotivated. Even a slightly physical team pushes them around and they just stand there on rebounds waiting for someone else to get it. Oh well. An Elite 8, Final 4, then a Championship. I can live with a down season. Especially considering the class coming in next year.

Cal took a similar team to the E-8 he followed that with TRULY a bunch of overacievers to a final 4. Cal can coach he just can’t play. He can’t shoot free throws, he can’t block out. What we are all forgetting is that EVERY team that plays us, (including Duke, IU, UL), will always bring their “A” game. If we don’t show up and play hard, EVERY game we will lose. It’s still early. Maybe a few losses are what our fan base needs. Now we can appreciate the wins more. GO CATS!!

I think it is clear now that what Cal has meant by “like” is that on a personal level he knows they are good kids. That cannot be totally discounted, but they are not a good team. You win some and you lose some. If we got Bennett it could have been interesting. They are what they are…..

As someone who has been going to Rupp for over thirty yrs I can remember many teams with slow starts and 8-10 losses. I’ve been in the building for my share of home losses and I can say that this year is the worst fan support I’ve ever encountered in BBN. We won a championship and reloaded with freshmen. Whether these guys were one and done or not a freshmen team is still a freshmen team. They need time to figure it out and they need the fans support, not constant criticizing and bitching and moaning. Every time Noel doesn’t block a shot at the rim people groan. If he tried to block them all he would foul out. He has the good sense to get the ones he can and not foul on the others. These kids are still only 18, adjusting to college life and figuring it all out. Let’s support them cheer when they need it, not only when they are winning. We used to shout Go Big Blue!!! In Rupp. I haven’t heard that chant this yr once. We can’t win every game but we can be true fans every game.

Ive seen several comments about the blue hairs in Rupp. I’m not quite to the blue hair stage yet but those blue hairs along with me as tteenager always supported and rooted for our team in Rupp. It seems that so many of our fans are becoming like Card fans. When they hit a hot streak their fans are up and running off their mouths about how they are gonna kick our ass. When they aren’t good their fans fade away, get real quiet and talk about the early eighties. We have been spoiled since Cal got here but we have to have some down years. We should cheer these guys on and hope they come around for the tournament and make a run. If you win the last game no one remembers the earlier losses. If all you care is winning every game and bad mouthing our kids when they lose you should start going to Louisville or Duke games. We don’t need fair weather fans in Rupp Arena.

This team is very frustrating to watch but They are still my team and will always support them. Cal is a good coach and a great recruiter. This years group just doesn’t have the drive to be great right now. It happens to every program in college basketball. Just relax and give these young men some support and quit bashing them. You won’t have the team that you had last year every year. But todays game I will take the blame, I forgot to put my lucky UK hat on until it was too late. My bad fellas, won’t happen again.

How do you all call your selves fans. We won the nc last year. NIT is fine with me but I see this team winning the sec tourney when their backs are against the wall.

@Oohlala You’re a real seeya next Tuesday. Cards fans go quiet and talk about the 80’s? LOL! Nothing like hyping banners won before black people could play college basketball and there was no shotclock. You’re pathetic.

I’m betting Noel is wishing he had went somewhere else about not. The only player on the team with any heart and desire. Imagine how dominant he’d be on a good team.

Call me out all you want but folks let’s not call players out please, saying player X sucks, etc. etc.. I think we went through this a month ago. All you do is hurt the program. Whether kids read these or not, I don’t know. Recruits do. Don’t say something behind a message board you would not say to someone’s face. Complain all you want but please do not call 18-21 kids out

@ Jules Camara. Yeah those banners from the 70’s, 90’s and now 2012 were when black people couldn’t play basketball. Also, playing the race card is tired and pathetic. Back in the 40’s and 50’s if the race card is your answer, your Louisville team didn’t allow black people to play either. I completely agree with Oohlala that IF you are a fan, be a fan. I am disappointed that we have lost the games we have lost, but I don’t call for the coaches head and say he can’t coach or attack the players personally or even blame who actually attended the game. We unfortunately can’t win every single game and until the NBA changes its rules I will still take my chances with the top talent in the nation to represent the GREATEST college basketball school in the nation.

@Jules….I live in Louisville and want to support the Cards as well but it’s hard when I have UL fans constantly talking trash at me when UL has a good yr. I respect all these kids for having the talent to get out on the court and perform. I listened last year to several of the fans I know talk about how great they were. Then when they hit a losing streak, these same fans would tell me..” I quit watching. Theyre not as good as I thought they were.” . Then when Louisville went on a winning streak in the big east tourney they were suddenly telling me how great the Cards are again. 95 percent of fans are great. It’s the few ridiculous ones I refer to. We have those kind of fans too and I’m just saying that lately it seems like we have a lot more of them. I love the Cats, win or lose I pull for them the next game. We are trying to run recruits off with our ridiculous comments and insults about these kids lately. And I never made my argument about race. That’s on you. You must have a race problem, not me.

We should make a pretty deep run into the NIT.

We will make the NCAA Tournament and I believe with a good draw we can win a few games. We have the talent, we just need to mature alittle bit and start having alittle chemistry. This is a very young team with NO upperclass leadership. It will take alittle time. Just give these KIDS alittle patience and it will all pay off in the end.

Anyone on here to talk bad about our players (kids), coach, or program, needs to learn this site is for true fans to discuss their team… Not crybaby douche nozzles that took off their UK gear during the BCG era….. So tired of the bandwagon fans. Remember this team is better than any of Tubby’s last three teams or BCG’s….. Careful what ya wish for!
