Cal on Alex: “That kid outworked him”

One of the many things the disappointed Cal tonight was Alex Poythress’ play, or lack thereof. He pointed out that Poythress had no offensive rebounds, whereas his defender had five. Simply put, Alex was outworked, which is no longer acceptable:

“I was very clear with Alex after the game. Either you want to change or you don’t.”

Also upsetting? Kyle Wiltjer’s continued lapses on defense:

“They went at Kyle every single possession in the game. I told him after, ‘You don’t think every team’s going to go right at you?'”

It was ugly, but the Cats got the win, and Cal still has faith: “I like my team, and I don’t have a magic wand and none of them poop ice cream.” Oh, Cal.

Vandy did get screwed on that call. However , the makeup call almost really screwed UK. Up 5, Willie didn’t even contest the 3 point shot on the other end cause you’re up 5 with 8 seconds left, what’s the point in contesting it. Now, when candy got the subsequent makeup call, they had a chance to win, when beforehand they merely had a chance to tie. Basically UK got a good break which almost turned into a horrific screwing

THOSE OF YOU WHO SAY IT WAS A SHOT CLOCK VIOLATION AN HAVE tIVO GO BACK WATCH THE REPLAY— NOEL SHOT THE BALL WITH 18.0 WHICH WAS IN THE 8 SECONDS
THAT WAS LEFT ON THE SHOT CLOCK WHEN UK TOOK THE BALL OUT OF BOUNDS. THE CLOCK ON THE TV SAID 18.2 ..GO LOOK. SO IF THERE WAS 25.5 SECONDS ON THE GAME CLOCK AND 8 SECONDS ON THE SHOT CLOCK …NOELS SHOT WAS GOOD …..GO LOOK !!!!!

Poythress – Have ball… will charge.

How has Cal not gotten on Noel about rebounding above his head with 2 hands? He could average 16 rebounds a game if he rebounded with 2 hands or didn’t try to wait for the ball to fall into his lap. So frustrating on contested rebounds.

I know that the NBA draft is based heavily on potential but every time I see a mock draft projecting Poythress as a lottery pick, I just shake my head. He *could* be if he really wanted it but he just doesn’t seem to. And hopefully Wiltjer speaks multiple languages ’cause he’s gonna need them when he’s playing internationally.

First off, Vandy got the make up call that almost won the game. Either way win or lose, one play should not decide a game. Alex did not play well but at least he looked the part of a D1 player. Kyle Wiltjer got abused time and again. He played 14 minutes that felt like 30. When he is 40, he will be the guy gunning 3’s in a YMCA while everyone ask why he didn’t get college offers.

Giving a team the chance to score is hardly the same as giving a team 2 points.

I’ll say it again. A game is longer than one play. Refs have never called a perfect game. Watch this one again and you will probably find numerous mistakes. Both of these teams need to play better.

  22. Maybe, but
    12:46 am January 11, 2013 Permalink

    20) true, but I think anyone in the country is going to rather have a wide open 3, and if you hit it, you get another contested 3 for the win, as opposed to a heavily defended 3 for the win. We basically traded 2 pts for 3 with the 2 blown calls

When are we going to stop making excuses for Poythress? Everyone wants to call this kid a lottery pick, but he hasn’t shown it all season. Yes, the potential is there, but not everyone realizes their potential and it takes some a lot longer than others.

Also, we all know every team will go after Wiltjer. He is the worst defensive player on the floor. He’s a major weakness on this team when he’s not scoring becasue he never brings it from a defensive/rebounding front.

Disapoythress could be a quality 8 or 9 man next year. He will have to battle for the former with Wiltjer.

Another great effort by Poythress. If that kid is a lottery pick then Ramon Harris should be starting in the NBA. I know he’s a freshman, he doesn’t show his emotions, blah, blah, blah. The kid is a product of the AAU and all the recruiting rankings. His effort level is what drives me crazy. He is a no show and wake up all you patient people, it’s January 11th, and Calipari is still saying he is getting out worked. Effort is effort. If you don’t give it, then step aside. Stop begging him to play hard. There’s a million people who would love to be his size that would simply give 110%. If there’s an NBA GM that still thinks this kid is worth of a first round pick good luck with that one. I know the Tulsa 66ers may be looking for 4 man, so it may work out for him.

Watching Kyle ATTEMPT to play defense gives me an ulcer. If Kyle goes in the game we must go to zone and have his lazy, unathletic butt in the center, then have everyone crash the boards becasue he can’t block out or rebound. I’m afraid he will lower on the bench next year, unless we dominate on the inside and he can stand outside alone and shoot, and the bigs save him on defense.

Watching Kyle Wiltjer has officially become worse than watching Josh Carrier on the floor. This is funny (or sad) because both are exalted as great practice players and two of the best shooters ever.

Can we please, for the love of everything holy, stop playing Kyle Wiltjer. It is simply embarrassing watching him get blown by on EVERY defensive possession.

Have never been able to figure out why Wiltjer was recruited. He battles with and is jealous of his own teammates. He’s a detriment to the team and needs to change, with quickness.
