Cal: Goodwin and Poythress will start, Harrow may come off the bench

At this rate, Andy Katz’s daily “3-point shot” column should really be renamed “Things Cal told me last night.” This morning, Katz shared Cal’s comments about his new squad, whom he got to practice with yesterday. Cal revealed one surprising bit of information: the only sure starters at this point are freshmen Archie Goodwin and Alex Poythress, and sophomore Ryan Harrow may come off the bench. This goes against the perceived notion that Harrow, already having one year of Cal’s tutelage under his wing, would start immediately; however, Cal also said that he was “extremely pleased” with Harrow and Julius Mays, the senior transfer whom he foresees becoming a legitimate rotation player.

So, from the horse’s mouth, we know Goodwin and Poythress will start. Get your brain in gear this morning by filling out the rest of the starting lineup.

How can it be anything but:

    PG – Harrow
    SG – Goodwin
    SF – Poythress
    PF – Wiltjer
    C – Noel

Is there even a debate? WCS, maybe?

    I could see this lineup:

    PG – Harrow
    SG – Mays
    SF – Goodwin
    PF – Poythress
    C – Noel

With Wiltjer playing the 6th man/scorer off of the bench.

    However, I could also see:

    PG – Harrow
    SG – Goodwin
    SF – Poythress
    PF – Cauley-Stein
    C – Noel

I really don’t see a scenario where Harrow doesn’t start.

    PF – Wiltjer
    C – Noel

This is all Calspeak. There is still a lot of time for Harrow to improve before the season starts and saying these things is one way to do it. The media is one way Cal gets the most out of his players…

After these comments I think it’s possible we see this lineup:
    PG – Goodwin
    SG – Mays
    SF – Poythress
    PF – Wiltjer
    C – Noel

Although, I still think the best lineup is:
    PG – Harrow
    SG – Goodwin
    SF – Poythress
    PF – Wiltjer
    C – Noel

    Its obviously going to be
    PG-Harrow
    SG-Goodwin
    SF-Poythress
    C-Noel
The only questionable position will the power forward and I would still be very surprised if it is not Wiltjer. Although will all this buzz around WCS, maybe he will take it and have Wiltjer come off the bench

This is only a motivational tactic for some reason about Harrow. He is guaranteed to start and be a leader of this team. This will be the starting lineup in December.

    1 – Harrow
    2 – Mays
    3 – Goodwin
    4 – Poythress
    5 – Noel

I don’t see Kyle Wiltjer starting. He will continue his role of coming off the bench, hiding out in transition on the wing, and drilling three-pointers.

    1 – Harrow
    2 – Goodwin
    3 – Wiltjer
    4 – Poythress
    5 – Noel

WCS the first big in, Mays the first guard in.

Note to everyone who has Poythress at the 3: I don’t see Poythress playing anything but the 4 or 5 this season. He’s more a PPat type player than anything else.

  19. randall
    9:55 am July 31, 2012 Permalink

This team would win by 30 points per game. There would be little chance of another team even getting a decent shot off.

    Goodwin
    Wiltjer
    Poythress
    WCS
    Noel

  20. ATB (Always True Blue)
    9:56 am July 31, 2012 Permalink

OK, Harrow will start at the PG position. Mays will be a backup for the 1/2 position. Goodwin will start the two and get some time at the 3. Poythress the three and some minutes at the four. Wiltjer the 4, and Noel the 5 with some minutes at the four. Cauley-Stein will backup the 4/5. Hood will backup the 3.

That is the rotation, it will be a legitimate 8 deep, you can can’t on it. It gives a good mix of size, speed, scoring, and defense on the floor at all times. It’s already a done deal.

  21. jaaaayyyyyyyyy
    9:57 am July 31, 2012 Permalink

Note to Biglaw Dawgin’. Cal has already talked about playing WCS and Noel together. Are you insinuating that he’d sit Poythress the whole time WCS is in? Of course not. So in that scenario (straight from Cal’s mouth multiple times) he’d be a 3.

Watching Goodwin’s highlights, I think its a real possibility we see him playing serious minutes as PG, dude gets anywhere he wants on the court. But at the same time I dont think there’s anyway Harrow doesnt get the start at PG
    PG Harrow

    SF Poythress
    PF Wiltjer/WCS
    C Noel

21 – Not saying the three players won’t ever be on the court at the same time, just saying Poythress is not a wing player, so it won’t be the starting lineup. Between the 4 and the 5 positions, there is a total of 80 minutes per game. Split between Noel, WCS, and Poythress, that’s about 27 minutes per player/per game, which is right around as much time per game as Cal likes to give his bigs.

I’m sure the three will be on the court at the same time at some point, but it will be situational. I.e., one of them gets hot, we’re getting smashed on the boards, or teams are playing defenses conducive to three bigs such as a 1-3-1 or 1-2-1-1.

No way WCS starts…..he will get plenty of min but as Noel’s backup. I think Cal will want Wiltjer on the floor. He is the best shoter on the team. I am going with:

    Harrow
    Goodwin
    Poythress
    Wiltjer
    Noel

WCS will be the first big off the bench and Mays-Hood will be the first guard/wing off the bench.

harrow is the facilitator, goodwin the shooter and can drive if needed, poythress the strong penetrator, stein and noel two huge bodies down low to make the offense dynamic. mays and wiltjer come off the bench as both great shooters

20 – I agree with pretty much everything you said except for the “Hood will backup the 3” statement. He is a 3 or a 2, I give ya that, but that’s about it. The kid won’t see much more time than Beckham did last yr. I don’t know about you but I want another championship, so here’s to hoping Cal’s got something better planned than Hood backing up Poythress.

This is one of the main reasons I feel confident about November 13th in Atlanta. UK will be an extremely talented, albeit young and inexperienced team still tinkering with lineups and chemistry. Duke has already been together for years, and although last year ended early, the fact is we still went 27-7 and beat Mich St., Michigan, UNC, FSU, and Kansas among others. Coach K is extremely hard to beat in early, non-conference neutral site games. Duke by 7.

#32, Hood won’t get alot of minutes but he will get some servicable minutes. I mean he is a 6’7″ kid with guard skills that shoots about 30% from 3. Reality is Hood would start at most schools, just not Kentucky. I hope Hood earns 15 minutes per game but I see it being between 5 to 10 minutes. We are in violent agreement.

#38 – Here we go again with the whole, Kentucky is young and inexperienced thing. How many times do these UK teams have to keep proving the doubters wrong? Just because another team is experienced doesn’t mean they will automatically beat the young, but more talented opponent. Every team we played last year was more experienced than us and look who ended up the National champion; the young, inexperienced team. We will see who will win, when December rolls around, but for now, continue to use the ‘Kentucky is young and inexperienced’ excuse and we will continue to prove you wrong.

35 – Beagle, yes, I’ve seen him play in the McD’s All American game. Apparently you haven’t seen him play because he’s more big man, than guard. He’s a scorer, shot blocker, and rebounder but NOT a consistent 3 point shooter. I don’t care what it says besides his name in the 10 seconds that you just googled him. Don’t get me wrong, he may step out and hit a trey every once in a while, but that’s not his game. He can drive, but he’s not an open-court ball handler like MKG.

He may be in the gym right now shooting 1,000 3’s a day and prove me wrong, but notwithstanding that, he’ll be starting at the 4 where he can gets mid-range looks and short, choppy drives to the hoop off the guards’ kicks.
