As the Kentucky basketball world continues to change by the second, ESPN’s Andy Katz did his best to get things straight by talking with Kentucky’s head coach in Indianapolis. Calipari said he told all five underclassmen to test the NBA Draft waters, but has encouraged them to keep their grades in good standing should they decide to come back. Cal told Katz that it’s only a matter of time until the young men are professionals, they just need to decide if it’s this year. Cal said he’s been told that Cousins and Wall are top-3 or top-5 players and Patrick Patterson is in the “15 range”. He added that Daniel Orton and Eric Bledsoe are likely between 15 and 25, but it’s just a matter of getting one team to be sold on you. On their possible returns, Cal said “If we get them back we’ll be better and if we don’t we’ll be fine”. Well said.
Perhaps the murkiest situation of the past few days, though, has been the status of Darnell Dodson. On that subject, Cal had this to say:
“I don’t believe it,” Calipari said. “I think he’ll be fine. There are rumors because it’s Kentucky. We’re like Darth Vader at Kentucky. I just don’t buy into them. We’ll have a good team next year with talented young players and go from there.”
So, there you go. Had Rick Pitino said this, there’d be a good “I’m your father” joke in there. Since Cal said it, we’ll just end with some audio of Katz talking to John Wall. Enjoy.
