Cal: Cats still in flux, need to get physical

The 80’s were weird times.

You’ve heard Frank Martin’s comments from the SEC Coaches’ Teleconference, now it’s time for Cal’s. Cal said that while Kentucky has made strides in recent weeks, they are “still in flux”:

“Ryan was out early, now Willie was out. We’re trying to get guys to play up to their abilities, so we’ve been in flux the whole year. We have not settled in to, OK, here’s who we are. We’re playing hard, we’re playing a little tougher, we’re executing a little bit better. Guys, individuals are playing a little bit better, but we’re still in flux.

Cal said that part of what’s holding the Cats back from hitting their groove is some players’ hesitance to get down and dirty when the game gets physical:

“We’re working on it every day, and we’ve got guys that don’t want that kind of game, and until you relish playing in that type of game, you’re going to look like you’re passive, soft or whatever you want to say. You have to want that. …On pick-and-rolls, you’ve got to want to drive that man into that screen. You want to come off there and get to the lane and get bumped. You want that action. If you don’t want that action, those games, they have a big affect on the game, the physicalness of the game. And inside, you got to say, ‘I’m going to meet it before it meets me.’ And if you’re not ready or you’re not wanting it, normally you’re behind the action. And we’re working on it. We’ve got a young team. Last year, it took us time. The year before it took us time. My first year we had a pretty physical team.”

Will two games at home help the Cats unleash their inner beasts?

New AP poll has UF as #2, should be a 1 seed now. I do not understand how Marquette actually moved up one spot after getting slaughtered by Louisville yesterday unless the rankings were made before the game?? UK got 21 Votes at least, Ole Miss, NC State, Wichita St and San Diego St fell out of the top 25.

Name some names. Who are we talking about?

Obviously, it’s NOT Nerlens. It’s not Uncle Julius. We know it’s Kyle. We know it’s Harrow. And we know it’s Alex. I doubt it’s WCS. I wonder if it’s Archie.

I would ask what do the guilty parties have in common?

Kyle and Harrow aren’t physical specimens. They probably don’t like the contact. Alex, he does have a strong body, but he’s ever played like a beast, so it’s a mindset and old habits dying hard. Archie? I don’t know. I like his attitude, seems to play with a chip on his shoulder. But he may have lingering habits too.

You usually see this in football, where a guy was so much bigger than his peers and when he got to college he just didn’t like getting hit by someone as big as he was. Never thought about basketball players being this way.

No beast in these kittens! Except for Big Nerlens. Thank goodness for the Big man or we are in trouble.

I was born in ’84, but the oddness of “Physical” is timeless.

#6. I agree with you on Most. I can not find a bad word to give Kyle though, the incorporation of a post game for him the last couple games has really added a dimension to our offense. Not just the incorporation of it, but the success of it as well. Nothing bad can be said of Nerlens, he seems to be ahead of the expected Offensive curve we were projecting. Defense is Stellar, with the exception of leaving his feet a couple times and no one rolling over to guard the follow up offensive. His EFFORT is off the charts on EVERY play. Uncle Julius is Exactly what this team needs in a reliable 5th year senior, very heady game! Archie has spent years on teams where he is so much better than the rest of his teammates and the other talent that he is having trouble adjusting, no worries, he will get it. Same goes for Poythress, HS and AAU ball seemed effortless!
Harrow, he can make some nice plays, but he hangs his head too often and whines on the court, especially with body language! Polson is the most pleasant surprise at backup PG, he knows how to protect the ball, does not get intimidated and some times out there he appears to have a 50″ vertical!

Hang tight BBN, the season is a journey, enjoy the ride and hope that it drops us off at the desired location!

I for one am getting tired of them fluxing it up every time they get a lead on anyone.

Telling this group they need to get more physical is like telling a dog it needs to quit eating meat. Sorry, but that is very unlikely to happen. This team is what it is…good guys but soft, not particularly well-trained in the fundamentals of basketball and not competitively great sufficient to compete at the higher levels of NCAA play. We are a top 35 team who might have some success in the NCAA, but beyond a Sweet 16 showing is more wishful thinking than reality.

New sources saying that UK’s coaches told Jason Hatcher to recommitt to USC to get them off of him and that he has been a silent committ to UK… Apparently he and his mom were worn out from the process and The reason why they showed up at Trinity is because they didnt know mom was gonna make it that public and wanted to make sure their “deal” was still on…

This shit will be epic if pulled off!!!
