Butch Jones is Tennessee’s new head coach

Tennessee finally has a coach: Cincinnati’s Butch Jones.
If you remember, a few weeks back, Jones was on Kentucky’s list of potential coaches, but apparently wanted to see if he got an offer from Tennessee first. Well, there you go, Butch. You’re the only willing girl left in the bar at last call. Congrats.
I like my Stoops.

Here’s to hoping we get to call him Botch Jones.
I think he will do good at Tenn.I like the guy, just dont like tenn.
Vols fans really seem to be enthusiastically embracing this move on the message boards. In a dark bedroom he almost looks like Jon Grunden.
#3 Tell us how you would know this little tidbit.
Butch Jones is a very good coach, much better than Charlie Strong. Really wish UT would have been able to lure Strong.
As much as I hate the Jethro Nation, they hit a home run here.
6 – Agree, they got a good one
Louisville stays Strong, UK still Stoopid and UT going Butch!
I’d like to welcome to Tennessee our new coach who lost to our worst team ever by 3 TD’s.
Jones has followed Brian Kelly at Central Mich and Cincy…at UT following Dooley will not have provide the same benefits. He has no SEC experience, and no ties to the south…..I wouldn’t feel all that great about it if I was a UT fan. But as a Cats fan, I like it.
HEAD COACHING RECORD: OVERALL (48-27)
CENTRAL MICHIGAN- 27-13 (3 YEARS)
CINCINNATI 21-14 (3RD YEAR)
Butch Jones is a winner. This hire does not bode well for Kentucky. Jones has a strong recruiting footprint in Ohio and will bring Tennessee football back. He will be directly competing with Stoops for the same talent.
Butch is no dummy…he gets $13 million over 5 years.
Not sure on this hire. UT fans wanted Dooley out because he could not beat anyone. So they go out and hire the coach that did get beat by Dooley by 4 touchdowns. Jones might be a good coach but he has a long hard job ahead of him or he will be gone in 3 years.
Our hire for the most part united a divided fanbase and injected excitement. UT’s did the opposite to them; they seem resigned and a bit divided. That’s the difference.
This is the man UK couldn’t hire because he wanted to not get fired in 3 years. UK Football sucks, and Butch is gonna make UT the KING AGAIN suckas!
#8. Why dont you go jump off a cliff!!! Jack-Arse!
I wonder how he feels being UT’s 10th choice? Hey Cincy, Petrino is available!
but what about bobby petrino, and is he still wearing that neck brace?
Wonder if Cincy fans are crying for their AD to be fired? What a hell hole.
look for kerry coombs to leave the osu for hc at cinci
Most Vols fans are jumping off a cliff. From what I’m reading in national media (respected guys like Bruce Feldman and SVP) Tennessee got themselves a good coach. And he wasn’t the last guy in the bar…..he should’ve been one of Tennessee’s first calls. Gruden was unrealistic & Gundy was never going to leave OK State. So if the Vols went to Strong & he said no, then Jones is choice #2. Oh, and by the way, Jones went 2-1 against Strong. So what if he lost to Dooley. Didn’t Spurrier and Richt lose to Joker! They must be fired! Jones won 4 conf. championships in 6 years. Yeah, he’s terrible. No worse than Muschamp when Florida hired him. Or Richt when Georgia hired him. Or Brian Kelly when Notre Dame hired him. They all seem to have worked out. Remember when Florida hired the guy from Utah. What’s he ever done. I’m not saying Jones is going to win 4 SEC Championships at Tenn in 6 years, but from what UT has been doing, he’ll be a big time improvement. I don’t see Stoops & UK beating them any time soon. They couldn’t beat UT in some of their worst years. It took Dooley for UK to do that. And he’s now gone.
21. Yes! Time for UK to feel the Orange Crush again for the next quarter century!!
Knoxville is an armpit. But, I bet there will be 100k+ Jethros in the stands at Neyland next year.
dude is way over-hyped. he almost took the COLORADO job for god’s sake. he has “fired in 2 years” written on his forehead.
All of my UT friends are calling him Dooley, Jr. He’s not that bad but he’s not taking them anywhere above 3rd in the SEC East.
You UK fans crack me up. You all wanted Butch Jones more than Stoops. He told you all NO. Admit it, Butch Jones is a better coach than Stoops. We win. You all lose. End of lecture.
FAIL !
This just means there’s another opportunity Neal Brown will not be our offensive coordinator.
Clay Travis stated on his radio station that this is the guy who turned down UK. Not true, UK never offered him.
With Coach Stoops bringing Elliot on board I’m so excited about UK football. I’m not worried about what little brother is doing. They were a lineman downfield on that fake FG from going to the “Discount Brake Pads” bowl…and they are in the BIG EAST! LOL
I have a feeling UK will be competing for SEC titles in 2 years and we all know that winning the SEC automatically means you’re the National Champion
Clay Travis molests collies.
29) I’m very glad we have Stoops, but Butch Jones DID turn us down. He wasn’t officially offered the job. ADs never “officially” offer a job until they are 99.99% sure the answer will be yes so they can say when they get turned down (like Butch did to us) “he was never offered”. Butch could have had the UK job if he wanted it. He didn’t. But i’m glad he didn’t because i think Stoops will be much better for the 3 years he is here.
29. Butch Jones was not interested in the UK job because the UK job is a death knell in the coaching profession. Butch Jones was better and smarter than that.
24. I bet you bathe with Axe bodyspray. Douchebag.
Butch Jones politely told UK he wasn’t interested because he was waiting for an offer from Tennessee. He was going to Colorado b/c he thought Strong was going to UT and Colorado was going to give him the moon. I’ll say this about him, at least he WANTED the Tennessee job. Time will tell how well he does at Tennessee. But 3rd in the SEC East??? Maybe one year but he’ll win the east eventually too. Who finished 3rd this year? South Carolina? Yeah they’re awful!
#5, Your comment contradicts itself! You say Butch Jones is a “much better coach” than Charlie Strong, but you wish TN would have hired him instead. If Strong is such a lousy coach wouldn’t you want him to remain at Louisville for many years to come????
BTW, Don’t even attempt to say “But Tennessee is our biggest rival”!! No it IS NOT, Its Louisville. TN fans have said many time UK is nothing on their radar!!
Stong at U of L scares the hell out of the UK fan base!!
@33: Go massage Clay Travis’s hemorrhoids.
Looks like the New Streak will continue to grow. It cracks me up that some of you yahoos make fun of a program that has beaten you almost without fail for three decades. And how the view from outside the top 25 look suckas? Bwahahahahahaha
That makes UK the only SEC team to hire a new coach this year without prior HC experience. I like Stoops, but if we are honest with ourselves, we have to cross our fingers that he can transition to the head post.
Yeah, Jones has had winning records at both schools he coached at, but neither school was in a very strong league, and both times he rode in on Kelly’s coattails. He already had a good base established by Kelly at both schools. He still lost to UL twice. The UT job is going to be a rebuilding effort, and he has yet to show that he is a rebuilder as much as a sustainer. When UK was interested in him, I didn’t think it was going to be a bad hire, but I wasn’t overly excited by it either. If he fails at UT, then they are going to get as much of an SEC coach graveyard reputation as UK.
#39 Yeh…..maybe in 26 years…as of right NOW,UK has that honor FIRMLY in check.
Solid pick. Tennessee fans will be happy.
why does eeryone at UT call me butchug jones?
He has followed Kelly up till this move. He hasn’t built up the two programs at all. Tennessee had to go way done from wish list to I hope you’ll listen list. Instead of following a coach who was going up the ladder he is following two coaches who were chased off. Good luck
I’ve never understood TN as a rival besides they were close to us like IU. As a young fan rivals to me are Louisville, North Carolina, Duke, and KU.

At the time of posting this, 52% said ‘No’, Jones isn’t the right choice!
39 ditto. Jones worst SEC hire of the 4.
From a distance Jones looks like an 8-4 coach at UT. Enjoy….
@47 and from a distance UK still looks like 0-8 and dead last in the SEC…
The Tennessee Volunteers have hired Cincinnati’s Butch Jones to replace Derek Dooley as the head football coach. What do you think of the decision?

Haha, UK fan stoops are afraid of a Butch!
UL keeps & over pays a coach that: Lied to them about interview for the UT job, called the UL fans out & said they should be like their arch enemy fans, verbally commits to UT, then changes his mind after he shook UL down for more money, and UL fans are happy? Are they too stupid to realize they just massively raised ticket prices on themselves? UL going to the ACC is irrelevant because by the time UL gets to the ACC, all the good schools will have already left, and UL will still be stuck playing crappy teams at higher ticket prices.
UT is so broken, there may be no fixing it.
#51 Strong had multiple reasons for turning down UT. 1. UF. 2.GA 3. USC. 4. Al. UT has to play all 4 of these teams every year. They get AU,LSU, T Aa&M 1 out of every 2 years. They could be 3-5 in conference or 4-4 and be a good team. I think he realizes his chance of going 11-1 or 12-0 is better at UL. I just hope Branhart hired a good coach. I think UK could have hired a coach with experience but he could turn out to be a great coach. Go Cats.
@44 maybe dook, unc, and ku are bball rivals even though we don’t play any of them every year. This is a football post. It wasn’t too long ago that UK and ul didn’t even play each other. UK’s rivalry with ut goes way back and if the 2 schools could become more competitive (ut in bball and UK in football) then ut would be UK’s biggest rival without question. dook, unc, and ku are not even on the radar when it comes to football rivalries. It’s ok, you must be real young and I’d venture to say UK is your fav team in bball and someone else is your fav in football. Some UK “fans” make me SMDH. If ut wasn’t a rival, then why does ut’s seniors take their last hit on a UK practice dummy? Why did fans rush the field after beating a mediocre ut team in football? Like I said before, UK and ul did not even compete against each other not too long ago. UK and ut is an old, true rival, while ul is a new, trendy rival. Pitino had a lot to do with it.
I’m glad UK got Stoops and Tennessee ended up with Farva.
@53
Even if UK became more competitive in football they will still never be Alabama from UT’s standpoint. You can laugh all you want, but until the last 10 years that was the rivalry for both schools contrary to the Auburn-Alabama talk. (That is a big game but more along the lines of little brother-big brother deal similar to UK-UL.) Both fan bases despise each other with a passion and both sit at #1 and #2 in overall SEC win percentage and SEC titles. It may seem dumb to suggest so now, but anyone with a grasp of SEC history understands this. Hell Alabama-UT along with UGA-Auburn is the main reason cross division rivalries exist within this crazy new 14 team SEC format. If UK started competing immediately in football, say 20 years or so, the rivalry could be something. Competing won’t do it alone however, it takes decades and the passing of generations to change viewpoints about UK for most of the SEC and country. You have to consider the notion also that the minute UK beats UT in football (see last year) the fan base in Knoxville goes bonkers…it lands any UT coach immediately on the hot seat. Hard to establish a rivalry when its hire a coach, fire a coach.
#54 Team ramrod.
#51 32-14 Nuff said.
