University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

Butch Jones hasn’t heard from UK

Butch Jones, one of the top candidates in UK’s head coaching search, told FOX19 on Monday that he hasn’t heard from the Wildcats:

“You hear things out there and I think that’s a compliment to our football program. But, all my energy and focus is on the University of Cincinnati and getting a quality bowl game. I live in a bunker, I study film and all my effort and energy is on every single player in our football program.”

On Sunday, rumor spread that Kentucky had offered the job to Jones, which the school quickly denied. Interestingly, Jones didn’t close the door on the Cats in his comments to the media, instead turning the conversation back to his team.

Jonathan Schuette will be by in a bit to tell you some more about the man they call Butch.

Something tells me that no-one has been offered the job except for the NFL names like Dungy or Cowher and that he waited at least a week to hear no’s from those names. Now we start over, just like the last time that Mitch hired a football coach.

Don’t hold your breath thinking that UK will get a coach who will recruit much better than Joker. The best we can hope for is a coach who can bring in a similar level of talent as Joker and develop it, instead of letting it rot. Someone with an innovative style of play that gets the most out of his roster.

Butch Jones is a different coach than Charlie Strong, but is at worst his equal in terms of ability. Considering that Strong is a top contender for jobs much better than UK, Kentucky could do a lot worse than Butch Jones.

We do not need a retread that can’t recruit.
In general, Senior citizens, of which I am one, do not want to be on the recruiting trail 300 days a year…and are usually set in their ways.

    20) gary Anderson is probly the only decent hire uk can make. Sonny dykes is Derek Dooley part 2. And everyone else that is better has better options or no HC experience. By the way utah state is ranked 35th or better in almost all offensive categories besides defense wins in the SEC.

    2:47 pm November 20, 2012 Permalink

    He sounds reasonable to me:

Since arriving in Cincinnati, Jones has made an immediate impact, building a staff of championship-level coaches and teachers, as well as an atmosphere of competition and family, while also overseeing an academic program of great success. Jones and his staff have shown the ability to produce NFL-ready talent as well, sending 11 players to the NFL over the past three years.

UC was the most improved NCAA FBS AQ team in 2011, finishing with a 10-3 mark and a Top-25 final ranking, as well as returning to postseason play, knocking of SEC foe Vanderbilt in the 2011 AutoZone Liberty Bowl, the program’s first bowl win over a BCS opponent.

#25 Alabama did pretty well with a coach from Kentucky (Bryant). I guess the whole world should be after Joker as the hot, new candidate now. Brian Kelly was 17-4 in the Big East in his three seasons at Cincy. Butch Jones is 10-9 in the same span of time. They aren’t the same man.

49, 41, 48, 38, 48 these are the number of points that utah state and gary Anderson has put on teams in their conference and the average score for the opponents is in the 20’s. Gary Anderson has utah state dominating the WAC. And if you can get a kid to go to utah state for football, you could get a kid to come to uk.

I think we could do worse than Butch Jones….Yes Gary Anderson/ McIntyre can coach….BUT…I believe he would struggle recruiting when taken out of his Northwest base. I am under the belief that we MUST….and I cannot understate that….MUST recruit OHIO, Michigan, PA, Illinois and Indiana. We MUST make ourselves the SEC to the NORTH….because we can NEVER EVER EVER out recruit LSU, FLA, GA, and others from the SEC for players out of the South….NEVER! So our focus needs to be placed northward and drawing to the SEC as being the SEC team of the North. With that said…I still feel we need a NFL name….Todd Haley,Dirk Koetter, JAY Gruden, Greg Roman, even Bruce Arians. These guys can DEVELOP RECRUITING CIRCLES by hiring assistants of staff and being able to sell – “This is how u get o the NFL. I know as I have been there.” John Calipari was able to use that @ Memphis – YES MEMPHIS….SO UK can do the same…..IF we are able to land that NFL Guy! Look at what Jim Mora II has done @ UCLA….that CAN BE DONE HERE!

#38 – Absolutely right we must hit the midwest and northeast. Outside of Kentucky, the largest number of UK All-Americans have come from this area. It just boggles the mind that we have 23 players from Georgia on our roster this year, all passed up I’m sure by UGA, USC, Auburn, UF, etc. We are basically trying to beat SEC teams with Georgia Southern players.

34, 37 – Please just stop….he is an absolutely terrible recruiter. Last years class at Utah State was 117 out of 122 D-1 teams. Not only is he a bad recruiter, but its primarily because he has spent most of his entire life coaching mid-majors in Utah. What makes you think that a guy whose never recruited a player east of the Mountain Time Zone can recruit players to the best conference in the country. He’s never even served as a member of a staff at a successful program??? He has one of the worst resumes for a UK coach I have ever seen.

I am going to tell you this and everyone needs to seriously think about it. There have been at least 20 names thrown out and there are only 2-3 that Cat fans can agree on (all NFL big-wigs) and none of them are coming here. The MOST anyone agrees on is Bobby Petrino and only HALF of our fanbase wants him. Bicker all you want about the middle-of-the-road guys you don’t want, but instead of complaining when he’s hired, give him a chance. And don’t start that “I’m telling you, this guy is going fail” bullcrap, most coaches fail here. Give whoever the poor soul who inherits Joker’s job a chance and quit acting like a bunch of spoiled babies.

I get a real chuckle out of the folks who emphasize recruiting in this search. Joker is one if the best recruiters UK has had, and one of the worst coaches. We are not going to take the studs away from big time programs. We have to work with SEC scraps and dominate in state recruiting. It is about discipline and development. That’s just the way it is and changing it will take years. Before we get there we have to first get back to respectability.

    42) gary Anderson was on urban Meyers coaching staff and was the defensive coordinator of a 13-0 team that beat Alabama in the sugar bowl in 2008. Utah state had 11 consecutive losing seasons before Anderson got there he is one hell of a coach and could get the players to a winning program.

49–i get a chuckle out of fans like you who claim that joker is such a good recruiter. UK’s recruiting classes have faired no better than 10th (and maybe 9th once) in the sec the past 10 years, per Rivals.com. maybe no one else can recruit any better at UK than joker, but he was no better than previous hc’s.

42,43,44 in case you didn’t realize gary Anderson has beat a BCS school this year which is more than joker can say. It’s not the recruiting ranking that matters. It’s the ability of the entire staff to (1) find talent – see it where others don’t like in Randall Cobb and (2) develop that talent. This is precisely where Coach Brooks succeeded and Coach Joker simply did not. Just curious b/c I dunno: Did Joker keep most of Papa Brooks’ staff? If my memory serves me well, and I think it does, Joker let many of Papa Brooks’ guys go.

#9 worse off than cincy just about all teams was worse off than cincy. Brian Kly was undefeated or just 1 loss when Jonez took over. Everywhere Jones had coached basically he’s followed Kelly and enjoyed the fruits of Kelly’s labor. He’s not had a full recruiting class in place before he’s bolted. He’s won with Kelly’s players. Should’ve just kept Joker if you hire him or Brown or Kingsbury. That’s really a home run
