Well if I had waited until a bit later in the night, I might have made this top story about the crazy football game. But as it is, lets salute the 100th Birthday of Burgess Meredith, an actor known for his great characters. In addition the role of Penguin (seen above), in the original Batman movie of the 1960s, Meredith was probably best known for his role as “Mickey” in the original “Rocky” movie. Meredith played Rocky’s trainer and reprised his role in two sequels, before dying in Rocky III, possibly at the site of the movie including acting from Hulk Hogan. Meredith passed away in 1997, having had an acting career that spanned over 50 years and every conceivable genre. Here on what would have been his 100th birthday, a question to debate. Which of the characters in Rocky is your favorite? Rocky, Apollo Creed, Mr T, Ivan Drago or Hot Lips? It is an important question.
To the news….
(1): Tonight the Cats will take on Miami (OH) in their second game of the season. It is a short turnaround for the Cats who will play a Miami team that is coming off an opening defeat to Towson. Miami is a team that likes to slow down the game and one can expect a lot of zone throughout the contest again. However we do know that the main story for the game will be the John Wall debut as the likely National Freshman of the Year, takes the court for the first time as a UK player. All other stories are secondary but that one and I personally cant wait. Remember where you are when you see the first Wall bucket…and then tell your grandkids one day.
(2): One of the questions going into the game is the status of DeAndre Liggins. Calipari was interviewed today and left it up in the air as to whether Liggins might take the court for the game tonight. The question as to what has happened with Liggins has been one that has gone all over the Big Blue Nation and rumors are rampant in every direction. While I have had no source that I believe knows the entire situation tell me information I can verify, I do believe that the reason for the games missed is not due to on-the-court performance. But what is the issue is clearly not something that will be released and my assumption is that when Liggins plays, we still wont know why he sat out. Tonight could be that first game.
(3): The other big news of the day is that Mike Hartline will sit out the rest of the regular season, although he could potentially be back for the bowl game. This is news that will settle an issue alluded to all game by announcer Andre Ware, which is that the team needed a set Quarterback for the game. That will now be Morgan Newton and it looks like the best option, as Hartline seemed not ready on Saturday. I still believe this team needs more Cobb at QB, but so long as the team is running the ball as it did in the second half, they will be in the last two ballgames.
(4): One little bit of recruiting news today as Doron Lamb announced he would commit this fall to a school, moving up his decision from the Spring. With Tobias Harris also deciding this week, this means that two of UK’s primary targets will also take themselves off the board in the coming days. If neither end up in Blue, then the pressure for UK on the guys waiting until the Spring (like Brandon Knight and CJ Leslie), will increase immensely.
(5): Lastly, two injuries for former UK players this weekend. Keenan Burton went down in the St Louis game today in what looked like a potential knee injury. No word on how long he could be out. And last night Kelenna Azubuike went down for the Golden State Warriors. The hope is that both guys recover quickly, but both injuries do look like they could be significant.
