Was fortunate enough last night to get a sneak peek of the new movie “Secretariat”, starring Diane Lane and John Malcovich. The movie was produced by Disney, and I went into it thinking that they would fluff up the story the way Disney does so often (looking at you Remember the Titans). But I have to admit, this movie was very, very well done and did not shy away from the struggles of both the horse and it’s handlers. The horse did not just dominate coming into the Kentucky Derby like some may have assumed. In fact, the horse had a serious mouth sore that nearly had him pulled from the race.
Diane Lane is fantastic in the movie, but Malkovich is the star. He plays the horse’s trainer, a kinda nutty, eccentric, poor fashioned has-been. He has some really funny lines throughout the movie and his interaction with Lane is spot-on. The Churchill Downs scenes were amazingly done, and the “Belmont” scenes, filmed at Keenland, were solid as well. It was probably the best horse racing movie I have seen in terms of the actual horse race scenes. Incredibly realistic.
All in all, this movie is well worth the 85 bucks or so it takes to watch a movie these days. And if you needed any extra motivation, here is what I would consider the best performance in sports history.
