BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Which UK Coach has Most NBA Money?

It’s all about the money, right?  Anymore, college basketball is just a training ground for the NBA, and Coach Cal proved that you get the top recruits to come to Kentucky by also getting those top recruits to the NBA.  But which of the last 4 UK coaches have actually brought home the most NBA dollars?  Below are all the players Pitino, Smith, Gillispie, and Calipari have brought to Lexington and how much salary those players have earned in the NBA THROUGH THIS SEASON.  Future earnings not counted.  Coaches were given credit for players they recruited to Kentucky, not which coach those players finished with.

Easily going to be Calipari once his guys get off their rookie contracts. Wall is already set to get paid, same with Cousins I think. This also highlights how pathetic Billy G was. I wish that man nothing but the worst.

Under John Calipari you failed to mention Nerlens Noel…obviously has yet to play an official season

It’s amazing how Calipari has put almost as many players in the NBA as Pitino in only 4 years. And as for Gillespie, you can hardly give him credit for Liggins and Harrellson. Billy G may have recruited them, but Calipari put them in the NBA

Wasn’t Patterson recruited by Smith? Why is he listed as a Gillespie guy?

Why is Daniel Orton under Billy G’s name?

What sticks out to me is Walker…..108 million and broke…..SAD very very sad!

I think the comparison is moot until Cal has had guys in the league from UK a little longer such as Rick has. John Wall was in his first batch of NBA players and he only has 3 seasons. So when he hits say… his 8th or 9th, then lets looks at totals. No match at that point, Cal will be at roughly 600 mill at that point.

Who in their right mind paid Michael Bradley 5.1 mil?

  10. Basteballer
    9:31 am August 22, 2013 Permalink

I think this is skewed. The coach that recruited them didn’t necessarly get them to the league. How could Gillispie possibly take credit for Orton or Harrellson? Orton never played for BCG and Harrellson rode the bench under him.

    10) Because would Orton or Harrellson even been at Kentucky if Gillispie didn’t bring them here?

Obviously your list only includes UK players but it would be interesting to see Pitino vs Cal with Memphis and UL players included. I agree with others that Cal deserves credit for Liggins and Harrelson.

Would be more interested to see NBA money all time. I wonder how Cal and Rick compare then. And #2, he mentioned all the players making money next year.

You guys are so dead set on finding BTI flaws, you make stupid statements.

I can’t stand Rush’s voice in the commercials. I’m telling you that I really love KSR with all my heart because that is the only way I would ever put myself thru listening to that goober.

21 of the 36 left early for the NBA. Stay in school, earn your degree and make $75,000.00 year after graduating.

As a former business major, wish I could have found me a college where I could have gone to school for 1-2 years and then leave and instantly become a VP or CEO of a company. Maybe Cal can start teaching in the business school too!

This list is pathetic. Cal Put Liggins Harrellson Patterson and Miller in the NBA not Gillespie. And Orton never played under Gillespie. He gets credit just because he recruited him? You can add the whole billy column to cals

Don’t you have to consider inflation? Guys 20 years ago making a “max” type contract is barely going to sniff a mid level contract today…

Hey BTI, how about doing a list of Cal’s first 4 years at UK vs. Pitinos first 4 at UL and also all of Cal’s UK years vs all of Pitinos UL years (and include any player they coached during those years)?

  20. Seven Eight Nine
    10:42 am August 22, 2013 Permalink

#19 Cal’s first 4 years at UK vs Pitino’s first 4 years at UK would be a more fair list

  21. Basteballer
    10:44 am August 22, 2013 Permalink

@BTI: Doesn’t matter if they wouldn’t have been at Kentucky if Gillispie hadn’t recruited them. It’s not the recruiting that gets them in the NBA; it’s what happens once they get there. Would those guys have gotten to the NBA under Gillispie?

You talk about another team that could go 40-0. If they can get past us, who knows.

If Matt, Drew, or Tyler wrote this article I would call it asinine, because that is what comparing coaches this way is. Because an intern wrote it I am willing to chalk it up to inexperience or desperation to just write something and try to avoid words like ignorance or stupidity. After all Bryan the Intern is there to learn, but it sure looks like he has a long way to go.

As others have stated i believe that none of those players made it to the NBA under Gillispe. I can’t stand that man.

And to think I would just like to maybe have a couple thousand dollars fall in my pocket and how much that would help me out right now…$657+ million, who wants to be my favorite former Wildcat? I paid good money to come watch you play…I could use some charity these days!

Bogan is making 5mil next year. Dang, that is a nice contract for 8th- or 9th man in the rotation. I not real familiar with how the NBA CBA works, how does a 10 year vet (Bogans) make 5 mil while a 4 year vet (Meeks) that will make a significantly great contribution to his team next season make 1mil?

  28. Biglaw Dawgin'
    5:32 pm August 22, 2013 Permalink

John Wall will make $7M this year, but it jumps up to about $16M next year. With his first class just now making big money, and others following suit, Cal will be on top of that list in 4-5 years.
